LIBEL IS A BIT HEAVY. How BBC presenters keep out of trouble

ScousyFogarty · 16/05/2011 16:37

The Beeb presenters will usually mention a name, say Joe Bloggs, and then add allegedly to keep them in the clear.

That may be jokey and TIC because I am not sure allegly get you out of the brown stuff..all the time

One thing puzzles me there is a sayin about Libel "The greater the truth. the greater the Libel" (I dont get that one, any law students on mumsnet?)

Suing for Libel is a rich mans game. Nothing has changed in that area.

Private Eye get sued a lot The BBC very little. Tread carefully. as they say

Wha?

Finallyspring · 16/05/2011 16:49

Gabby you're obsessed with this libel/injunctions stuff.

ScousyFogarty · 16/05/2011 16:49

Well, sindy, if you read any papers there has been a lot of jive about Libel
and 50 grand injunctions and message boards are possibly under some threat from C amerons lawmakers. (I hope that does not happen)

Because you get more freedom here than you would get in newspapers or the BBC I have done the lot in my time.So I speak from experience....I have a rule, Sindy, I dont get involved in what I am not interested in

Thats not a bad rule. Toodle pip

Thank you for clarifying your position

SkipToTheEnd · 16/05/2011 17:00

I only opened this thread to confirm it was indeed Gabby.

AnnieLobeseder · 16/05/2011 17:01

I really don't understand what you're trying to say. But don't bother to explain.....

PiazzaDellaRotonda · 16/05/2011 17:01

Why is this in AIBU??

ScousyFogarty · 16/05/2011 17:04

Sindy if you had been a man you would not have got the gentleman treatment from me.. Be grateful for good manners

what I need here is a law student who is in the 2nd year of his/her degree
We can at least clear up "the greater the truth the greater the libel"

Most of us would think tell the truth, no problem

OP posts:
SindyTellsMe · 16/05/2011 17:08

Why you not give me the not get the gentleman treatment? I the manners get not need the man be grateful for.

BooBearBoo · 16/05/2011 17:08

(1) Saying allegedly does NOT protect you from anything as far as libel goes

(2) If something is true then it isn't libel so your saying makes no sense at all

(3) The BBC reports the news. Private Eye implies/insinuates/infers all sorts which can often be libellous.

(4) "Cameron's lawmakers" lol . Who are they then? Libel law has been developed (mainly) by the courts, not by the legislature.

ScousyFogarty · 16/05/2011 17:09

And incidentall while we are waiting, It is not bad advice to write what you are interested in. Otherwise if your a man you will be thought of as a knee-jerk spoiler....or a disenchanted Coalitionite. (I think there are a few of them here)

And, of course, if you are not into law and legal matters you will have no thoughts on the questions I am raising. Go to court for a while. They are public courts cheers

BooBearBoo · 16/05/2011 17:10

Ich bin a practising libel lawyer but maybe you'd prefer a 2nd year law student instead?? ;)

ScousyFogarty · 16/05/2011 17:11

I hope finally is not a Gaby Roslin fashionesta

OP posts:
SockShitter · 16/05/2011 17:12

ScousyFogarty · 16/05/2011 17:25

If you are litterally shitting socks..see a doctor and change your eating habits

BOO what you say seems logical but it is probably wrong. (Or was wrong at one time)

Can someone pump the phrase..in question into Mr Google. An answer may be forthcoming ( why have all the nasty buggers crawled out of the woodwork here. manners boys Camerooney may be watching.)

ScousyFogarty · 16/05/2011 17:27

I have had a thought only a guess. Is CRIMINAL libel different?

OP posts:
HRHShoesytwoesy · 16/05/2011 17:28

Gabby please go back to being Gabby

FourFingeredKitkat · 16/05/2011 17:38

Isn't it slander not libel? I though libel was only for the printed word...

ScousyFogarty · 16/05/2011 17:40

I will not be Gabby Hayes or Gaby Roslin

Where is Michael Mansfield QC when you need him?

SERIOUSLY....I thought there were a sprinkling of middle class people on Mumsnet with an interest in law

Have they deserted their desks and gone home for their teas?

The students should have finished lectures and having a break before tippling. This is a good chance for you to shine on LIBEL law.

Libel = printed word
Slander = spoken word

Both are defamatory.

No such thing as criminal libel.

"BOO what you say seems logical but it is probably wrong"

Ok then Hmm

ScousyFogarty · 16/05/2011 17:58

BOO thanks but I once said to a solicitor "the great the truther the greater the libel" He said OF COIURSE. I wasnt paying him so he didnt say anymore. Surely of course, means YES. The law may have changed. There was Criminal libel because Oscar wilde went to nick for it.

so where is that ruddy student lawyer. Get my brif on this piggin message board.

Seriously...i ONCE HAD A RUN IN WITH URI GELLER ON THE RADIO He got very cross. Spittin flames.
