LIBEL IS A BIT HEAVY. How BBC presenters keep out of trouble

ScousyFogarty · 16/05/2011 16:37

The Beeb presenters will usually mention a name, say Joe Bloggs, and then add allegedly to keep them in the clear.

That may be jokey and TIC because I am not sure allegly get you out of the brown stuff..all the time

One thing puzzles me there is a sayin about Libel "The greater the truth. the greater the Libel" (I dont get that one, any law students on mumsnet?)

Suing for Libel is a rich mans game. Nothing has changed in that area.

Private Eye get sued a lot The BBC very little. Tread carefully. as they say

I'm a barrister. I trump a solicitor Wink

SindyTellsMe · 16/05/2011 18:03

Was the solicitor on the bus?

SindyTellsMe · 16/05/2011 18:06

Okay, leaving the thread now. I can't understand a ruddy word. Haven't come across Gabby before...

theyoungvisiter · 16/05/2011 18:08

Are you sure he didn't actually say:

"Of coooooourse...." in a soothing tone while backing away into his waiting taxi cab?

SarahStratton · 16/05/2011 18:09

Gabby interests me. And I though OW went to jail for entirely different reasons.

ScousyFogarty · 16/05/2011 18:29

trusting from memory I may have got the Wilde thing wrong And nobodys put me right. Where are the middle class mumsnetters?

SARAH STRATTON are you posting under your real name. ? very rare bird.
Your right about Oscar. Seen the film Lord queensbury (boxing rules fames)
was involved and he got thh wilde man jailed Fry played wilde in the film

There still was criminal libel at one time. One thing, libel lawyers are the highestpaid

Right we have gone to 33 posts on a serious question without nailing it.

I cant understand why people on a serious site are interested in Gaby Hayes and Gaby Roslin

your too young for the former and too old for the latter. Brm Brm

PS I thought i spotted a scouse accent in a post. Hello La, how,s your da.?

I'm a middle class MNer and I still have absolutely no idea what you're on about. But I find I don't actually care so that's okay.

HopeEternal · 16/05/2011 19:33

Not a lawyer but I have always understood that the fact that a statement is true is not absolute defence against its publication being libellous / slanderous.

BooBearBoo · 16/05/2011 20:11

It is an abolsute defence! It's called the defence of justification.

theyoungvisiter · 16/05/2011 20:31

It could be invasion of privacy or something, but it couldn't be libel if it's true. Because the definition of libel is saying stuff that's NOT true.

Of course the difficulty with libel is that (in this country anyway) the onus is on the publisher/writer to prove the truth of their statement. And that can be very difficult.

theyoungvisiter · 16/05/2011 20:33

do you maybe mean it's not an absolute defence to say that you believed the statement to be true? If so, I think that is correct (not an expert though - unlike boo!)

PiazzaDellaRotonda · 16/05/2011 20:38

This thread has been officially categorised as 'FULL OF SHAT'

As you were.

mayorquimby · 16/05/2011 22:17

"I'm a barrister. I trump a solicitor"

Smile bloody donkeys them lot.

glassofwhiteanybody · 16/05/2011 23:12

I'd say YABU for posting this in YABU, when it isn't a YABU question! I want to read about children at weddings, fights with inlaws and unreasonable husbands

ScousyFogarty · 17/05/2011 10:44

Mayor quimby I assume you are joking about the barrister bit.?

Piazza.. I dont know if you are suffering with constipation or consternation
(you certainly have a word blockage)

People who write in acronyms should go back to night school and l sack Capello as your English teacher.

we are all out of our depths at some stage Please stop reacting as though you are a toddler who has been refused a sweetie.

When I have time, I will look up the question at hand in a reputable law dictionary. Cant say fairer than that.

"The greater the truth, the greater the libel" I stuck the phrase into Mr Google. He came up withj an explanation . Its not legal, but it is interesting.

If it interests you try google. (its almost rules the world)
