She's always annoyed me. I found her an attention-seeking, madonna-wannabe, irritating one-trick pony, BUT.... I turned to BBC3 this eve just as her concert started, found myself watching it and, er, I'm really impressed! She's don't all this jazz and piano stuff and is brilliant.

I feel slightly Blush about this. Was I always wrong? Has she developed as an 'artist'?! Have I had one too many Wine?! What's going on??!!!

I think you'll find most female singers have to do stuff they don't like in order to get thro' Cindy Lauper refused to play the game and as such Madonna stole her crown. Kate Bush did only one tour as she hated the whole tour thing and retreated to the studio to concentrate on the music not the image. Madonna was prepared to do what it takes until she could get control of her image/music. Any of the major female performers will worry about looks/weight/image etc. Unfortunately the entertainment industry demands good looking/thin etc.

ednurse · 16/05/2011 22:38

She's very good. I saw her live last year - her show was AMAZING.

Meglet · 16/05/2011 22:44

I don't know why I approve of Gaga but can't stand Katy Perry, Rehanna etc. Confused

NetworkGuy · 17/05/2011 05:55

"Kate Bush did only one tour as she hated the whole tour thing and retreated to the studio to concentrate on the music not the image."

Forgive me but did KB really say she hated the whole touring thing?

I didn't hear all of the interview she gave Ken Bruce on R2, but when she was interviewed by John Wilson on R4 Front Row she said she enjoyed doing the tour immensely. She did say that she has nightmares about forgetting the words but said that after a few days she would be OK on a tour.

I've not followed her releases and don't know how old her children are so don't know when she was in "new Mum" situation, but she did say something about touring being very disruptive for her family, so another reason she's not especially wanting to do it...

CoteDAzur · 17/05/2011 07:51

Hecate Hmm

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 17/05/2011 07:56

yes?

aldiwhore · 17/05/2011 08:01

I'm not a massive fan, but always thought she was a great popstar.... then I saw the same footage (yellow hair, piano, bloody amazing voice?) and thought her comparisons to Madonna (a great popstar too) were not quite good enough, Gaga is a female Freddy Mercury and super talented in a way that trancends her peers!

YANBU....

carminaburana · 17/05/2011 08:29

quite a few people would like to have sex with lady gaga - in fact, I think the queue would go from here to New York

iridium · 17/05/2011 09:38

Pfft to the Freddie Mercury comparison. He had more singing ability in his little finger. I can see where someone was going saying Elton John upthread, but not on the evidence of her latest album. They have released four songs from it now and it isn't even out yet. Compare that to Katy Perry say, who had a perfect era with her latest album - four songs released over about a year, even spaced out, all went to #1 in the US. Gaga is still going to sell a shedload of albums. I think they are going for 1 million in the first week, which just doesn't happen anymore, but that doesn't make it good.

Her performance for the Radio 1 Big Weekend is on iplayer now if people want to check it out. My favourite bits are when she comes in early the Vogue bit on Born This Way and also doesn't sing any of Judas at all I think :)

NetworkGuy · 17/05/2011 11:00

John Wilson on R4 (Front Row, 04-05-11) - the interview with Kate Bush runs for the first 20 minutes or so, and she mentions touring from about 15th minute...

ScousyFogarty · 17/05/2011 11:15

LADY HAS A GA has a gimmick. She takes the p+ss out of fashion. It has worked brilliantly for her career end of story

IntergalacticHussy · 17/05/2011 11:48

OMG! (Sorry, i know it's really unmumsnetty)

I think dh and I saw her at the Bitter End in NYC back in 2007. I know the vid on youtube is from 2006 but i'm sure it was her.

I wouldn't have recognised her at all from the way she looks nowadays although there's always been something strangely familiar about her face Shock

HaughtyChuckle · 17/05/2011 12:56

she has an amazing voice and is generally fab :)

BambinoBoo · 17/05/2011 13:16

She is very very talented musically but she tries far too hard to be wacky. I can imagine her mantra is "I'm lady gaga, I'm mad I am". Her image is too manufactured for my taste.

strandednomore · 17/05/2011 14:22

I can't stand her but then I am old. I don't know much about her music but we were listening to something she was singing on the car radio the other day and both me and my dh thought she sounded like Ace of Bass. Not cool. And I am not a fan of anyone who has to wear ridiculous outfits to disguise the fact that her music is crap.

Sorry, I did warn you, I'm turning into my parents (mutter mutter mutter, they don't make them like thes used to, mutter mutter mutter)

Although to be fair I do like some modern music. I love Eminem for example.

Insomnia11 · 17/05/2011 14:37

I don't like all her music or videos but I think she is a Good Thing. :) She can write a catchy pop tune and she seems, for all the pomp, hype and fame, rather a considerate person towards her fans. She also seems to inspire others to be themselves and be confident. Also she seems an empowered woman making her own choices in life. People still don't like powerful women in the 21st century. I like that she pisses people off Grin

Insomnia11 · 17/05/2011 14:39

Yes, her image is manufactured - by herself, that makes a huge difference. It's not some Simon Cowell/Fuller type saying "Right we need one with blonde hair, one with red hair, one who is black...and we'll call them Baby, Ginger, Scary..."

Insomnia11 · 17/05/2011 14:44

Three post ment...I also think there is room in music for everything from Lady Gaga to solo singer/songwriters with guitars to death metal thrash hip hop to church music. Record companies have less control over what people listen to than ever. Music has never been more eclectic than it is right at this point, now. Stop wishing for the past and explore what is good about the modern world.

kiwibella · 17/05/2011 16:33

I just said to dh last night that I have changed my opinion of her after seeing several interviews over the weekend. Weren't the big stars making the most of their "Big Weekend" by being on EVERY show this weekend!

JimJammum · 17/05/2011 19:42

I was surprised; I had put her down to being "all about the hype" in terms of her image etc. I secretly enjoy some of her music and find her songs irritatingly catchy but I was impressed with her performance at the weekend. It's almost a pity her knack for writing a catchy tune and singing with a great voice have been overhadowed by the wierd outfits and general drama around her image, appearance etc (which I still can't stand). Apparently, she has always been alternative in her dress, but I can't help feeling that maybe some would take her more seriousl if she stripped it all back; it's potentially a shame if she feels she has to project an image to get noticed and stand out from the crowd as it seems she has enough talent. However, if she has created an alter-ego in order to protect her privacy, and enable her to walk down the street without being noticed, then I suppose good for her.

kiwibella · 17/05/2011 20:25

I particularly liked her jazz set.

Terraviva · 17/05/2011 20:36

Me too Kiwibella. Her voice was fantastic during the jazz set. I can take or leave most of her pop tunes, but I didn't realise how versatile she was.

I saw her on Graham Norton. She can sing properly. Many female pop stars have weak voices when they hit the high notes. Her voice is rich across her whole range. Unlike Madonna, whose voice only has a range of about a octave and needs all the heavy production she throws at it because it is so thin.

I think Gaga's styling is a deliberate, calculated part of her image. Without it, she'd be just another singer-songwriter, trying to get noticed. I wonder how many records she sells everytime she gets papped as she trips up in an airport?

MirandaGoshawk · 17/05/2011 21:17

I saw her on Graham Norton too. Once more, I was hoping to get some idea of the person beneath the make-up, wigs, wacky outfits - but no. I have still no idea of what makes her tick, what she likes & dislikes, what her background is (rich/poor, city/countryside, infuences, where she lives etc.).

There was a long article about her in one of the Sunday supplements at the weekend and from that I learned that a) she is tired because she's doing a lot of touring b) her limo & entourage held up the traffic at the Cannes film festival, and c) she has banned her dancers from having sex on tour. So, nothing then.

I find her music derivative. She seems to be a triumph of style over substance. As someone has said, If you saw her naked-faced in the street you wouldn't recognise her. She is a good pianist but she leaves me cold.

sakura · 18/05/2011 06:17

I hardly know who she is living in my own bubble as I do, but I clicked your link Bornthiswaybaby to the youtube clip of her live and there's really something about her isn't there. definitely the X factor and I actually think she's a bit of a non-conformist by today's standards. ( I believe people conform more today than they did in the past)
