dont get me wrong, i am a massive fan of his 30 minute meals,

but last week i went to do the cod dish - £10.20 on the fish alone

just been to get meat to do the Sunday roast one - fillet of beef for 4 people would have been £20 for 4 people - for the meat alone

the woman in Tesco behind the fish counter said "he is a pain in the arse and thinks everyone is a millionaire".

a few weeks ago i would have said not, but looking at the prices for some of the meals....he argues that convenience food is just as expensive. it bleeding well is not! its not half as nice i admit but aibu in thinking that he has lost touch with what normal everyday people can afford?

Chicken breasts for a pie?!

QuickLookBusy · 14/05/2011 15:40

Sorry but I love Jamie's books and feel I ought to defend the poor little blighter.

His MOF recipes aren't expensive compared to other recipe books, they are basic but tasty.

Yes 30 minutes can be expensive, but he never protrayed them as being cheap.

I also applaud him for setting up the charity and helping hundreds of young people by giving them a second chance in life. I haven't seen any other over paid chef doing that.
Gordon twat Ramsey is someone who has definitely lost touch with reality Nigella has had a hard life so I will let her off.

And he does have 4 kids so probably needs all that moneySmile

TheFlyingOnion · 14/05/2011 15:42

Imo Jamie didn't need to be a trained teacher to be the head of this school. He had seen first hand what it is like to be disenfranchised from school - that was his qualification for the job. That and wanting to make a difference.

There is a massive number of children who finish secondary school functionally illiterate and inummerate and/or who have no qualifications whatsoever. Chefs aren't responsible for this, teachers are. If teachers know all the answers why are they still failing thousands of children every year?

fattyacid please excuse me while I do a silent scream. Jamie "wants to make a difference" does he??? Are you sure?? He doesn't just want to make a massive pile of money?? Cos that's the only difference he seems to be making to me. FWIW school dinners round here are still absolutely disgusting, so I can see he made a massive difference there Hmm

And as for teachers failing thousands of children a year, maybe if the government let up on the red tape bullshit for two minutes teachers would have time to actually TEACH! And I don't see the parents of these failing children doing bugger all to help, when the child is fundamentally THEIR responsibility and is with them for far more time than they are in school. There is only so much a teacher can do if the parents don't give a shit.

and quite WHO Jamie pissing Oliver thinks he is to waltz in and wave his organic feckin wand and fix the problem of 5 generations is ANYBODY'S GUESS

QuickLookBusy · 14/05/2011 15:46

But Theflyingonion, at least he is doing something. Surely that is better than sitting on your arse and doing nothing. He is worth tens of millions of pounds, he could sit on his arse and do nothing for the rest of his life.

At least he gets people talking about the issues he gets involved in.

TheFlyingOnion · 14/05/2011 15:50

Actually I am doing something to "make a difference". I'm a teacher Grin

I just don't actually think he does make a difference. Its just a TV show.

Fair enough to those kids he trained as chefs, that did make a difference to them, obviously, but he can't solve the school dinners/obesity/education thing, he's simply making a buck.

Now Jamie, you're a good cook, you really are, so just mosey back into the kitchen and stick to what you are good at, there's a love....

ThatVikRinA22 · 14/05/2011 15:52

maybe thats my problem then.....ive been doing the 30 min meals everyday now for the last month or so, i dont think they are just for special occasions - they are not 3 course meals, they are usually a main meal with a salad and sometimes a pudding. (i am currently cursing DH who bought cherries today for a JO tonight at a cost of almost £4! but thats his fault - ive been using raspberries - much cheaper!)

but some of the meals are vastly expensive to do, the fish and meat ones particularly, others aren't, so i tend to pick the cheaper ones usually, but thought we would try some of the ones i'd not done yet - thats when i realised the £££££ involved.

fwiw i do like the meals ive done so far and i dont mine the man himself. i just think £20 for a piece of beef for 4 is OTT. ended up getting a normal bit of beef from morrisons meat counter, it will have to do!

FattyAcid - Do you know that you are talking nonsense, or are you so much into your bubble that you really believe in what you spout? Society may be failing certain children, their parents may be failing certain children but teachers for the most part are trying their damnedest to help break a cycle that society has created. And all the stupid TV programmes in the world won't help that.

Jennytailia · 14/05/2011 15:56

Yep top soil was from homebase on offer, with his lovely face plastered on the front.

TheFlyingOnion · 14/05/2011 15:57

get yourself over here VicarIATT, someone paid £8 for cherries! Shock

TheFlyingOnion · 14/05/2011 15:58

thank you Colonel - that's what I meant, but your post is more erudite and has less ranting Blush

beesimo · 14/05/2011 16:00

Jennytailia

Top soil that usual contains quite a bit of fertiliser/manure you don't think Jamie provided the poo personally do you?

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 14/05/2011 16:02

But 'His organic feckin wand' did make me laugh a lot! :)

QuickLookBusy · 14/05/2011 16:06

Sorry TheflyingOnion, I didn't mean to imply anyone on here was sitting on their arse doing nothing

I was referring to those multi millionaire chefs.

TheFlyingOnion · 14/05/2011 16:06

beesimo he probably employs somebody to poo for him

and thanks, colonel!

TheFlyingOnion · 14/05/2011 16:07

thats ok quicklookbusy I kind of knew that anyway. And I have been sitting on my arse. All day in fact!

BristolJim · 14/05/2011 16:13

I've said it from the beginning, Jamie Oliver is a fat-tongued, mockney, talentless kitchen-hand. His crusades are misplaced and his stance as self-appointed keeper of the nation's morals is nauseating. I hate him with a passion.

His food is shit. He is shit. Everything about him is shit, shit, shit and I relish the prospect of a tabloid backlash.

He is shit and I hate him.

QuickLookBusy · 14/05/2011 16:18

So you don't like him then Jim?

MoreBeta · 14/05/2011 16:21

I think Jim might have an number of underlying issue he is still working through.

Don't hold back Jim its not good for a man to be a holder backer.

BristolJim · 14/05/2011 16:23

:( I just hate him so much :(

(Sobs) - and everyone else seems to think he's some sort of saint, and I just can't make everyone see that he's a money grubbing, talentless, self-promoting cock.

:(

TheFlyingOnion · 14/05/2011 16:25

I feel your pain, Jim, I do.

QuickLookBusy · 14/05/2011 16:33

Well I am sorry to disagree Jim, but I have fallen for Jamie's charms.

I really love his recipes. I am a northern lass so like his no nonsense, no fannying [sp?] around with bits and bobs approach.

Which chefs do you like?

MoreBeta · 14/05/2011 16:35

I suspect Jim might actually be a chef.

TheFlyingOnion · 14/05/2011 16:35

none. They should all jeff off.

QuickLookBusy · 14/05/2011 16:48
Grin
TheFlyingOnion · 14/05/2011 16:51

I think this diet is making me cranky Grin

I went to Gary Rhodes' restaurant once and the food was diviiine. Although I got really drunk and couldn't remember exactly what I had the next day, I remember it was really lovely....

However, don't most of these chefs not actually work as chefs anymore? Others chefs cook the food and they just lend their name? Thats seems a bit of a weird idea to me.
