AIBU to pretend I have no idea how my washing maching broke to repair man?

Was really silly. DD wet the bed while sleeping in our bed. Wee all over the duvet. I washed in washing machine and the washing machine now doesn't spin. The washing machine is under guarantee but misuse of machine not covered.
We are broke so a free repair would be grand. AIBU to claim absolute ignorance to why it has stopped spinning to the repair man and hope there is no way they can tell it was overloaded?

A single duvet wouldnt overload it? Once wet it wouldnt be any heavier than a washload of towels.

squeakytoy · 13/05/2011 22:24

Oops. just realised you said your bed, which would be a double. Oh just say you had a load of towels in, (they often unbalance on a spin anyway).

DaisySteiner · 13/05/2011 22:25

A duvet shouldn't wreck a washing machine. Misuse of washing machine would be to put bricks in it or similar. No need to even mention it IMO.

fit2drop · 13/05/2011 22:25

Your washer should be able to take a duvet anyway shouldn't it?
Unless its a very tiny washer....

If its under guarantee I wouldn't say what was in it, just "its broke , please come fix it , thank you"

simpson · 13/05/2011 22:27

I would have thought a washing machine could take a duvet too tbh.

Would do as fit2drop says.....

Imnotaslimjim · 13/05/2011 22:28

an engineer once explained to me that the only way to really overload a washing machine would be to pack it tight with jeans after stuffing a duvet in there, so I don't think you're duvet would have done it

Its possible though, that the pump is blocked - if it can't drain it won't spin. I'd just ring them and say "its busted, please fix it" they won't be able to tell what did it

AnyoneforTurps · 13/05/2011 22:28

Yanbu, it's not as if you washed a load of bricks in there.

claretandcheese · 13/05/2011 22:30

Nope, don't mention it specifically just in case. I wouldn't have thought it would have caused any damage, though.

icooksocks · 13/05/2011 22:30

You are't supposed to put bricks in a washing machine??

flabbyapronbelly · 13/05/2011 22:31

I had to totally ram the door shut - is quite a small washer and was a king sized duvet - oops
Gutted as was trying to save trip to launderette to get duvet done and have had to go today - £11 for 2 loads!

OP posts:
oldraver · 13/05/2011 22:33

I dont think they would know what broke it, I reckon it was just a coincidence anyway

Getting Cotton buds and 3" inch long rivets stuck in the pump is however another matter

fit2drop · 13/05/2011 22:35

oldraver do I sense a touch of experience there Grin

bugsylugs · 13/05/2011 22:36

Have 'washed' our kingsize duvet in machine too small so did a rubbish job but machine ok mum washes hers in machine all the time. I think it is normal use so ignore and plead ignorance

claretandcheese · 13/05/2011 22:39

icooksocks Well if you live up to your name, putting bricks in washing machine seems reasonable.

floweryblue · 13/05/2011 22:50

You don't know what broke your washing machine. It just broke. If repair man asks any questions, just say you were using it as normal and it stopped working, that is exactly what happened, it is the truth.

PartialToACupOfMilo · 13/05/2011 22:53

Don't worry about it. I agonised over a similar thing with our dryer which I'm fairly sure was caused by putting too many towels in to dry. No more than a washing machine load, but still they did feel heavy when they went in. We called someone out, they came and they didn't even ask how it had happened. Don't ask - don't say - dont worry Grin

mumeeee · 13/05/2011 22:54

I've always washed duvets in the washing machine.

WiiUnfit · 13/05/2011 23:39

Don't tell him. If he asks what you had in it just reply "clothes" with an angelic look! :)

inappa · 13/05/2011 23:51

YABU what you're proposing to do is fraud

fit2drop · 14/05/2011 00:08

Oh get a grip inappa. Biscuit

Piggles · 14/05/2011 04:13

It may not have even been the duvet that did the washer in - it could have been a total coincidence. I don't think I'd confess that I might have over-stuffed the thing either, but would be vague and just say I was washing a bunch of clothes if they ask.

Just make sure when the repairman comes that DD isn't there telling him: "It broke because mum stuffed the king size duvet in there after I did a wee on it!"

saffy85 · 14/05/2011 08:31

Fraud? Really? Hmm but presumably OP doesn't fix washing machines for a living so wouldn't know for sure why the machine stopped working. Could have been anything.

If he asks (I doubt he will) just say bedding and leave it at that. As in pillowcases and stuff. See no fraud involved

southmum · 14/05/2011 08:49

Inappa's right OP - you're goin daaaaaaaaahn........

Hmm
DaisySteiner · 14/05/2011 08:54

I think the consensus is that a duvet shouldn't wreck a healthy washing machine after a single wash, therefore she's not doing anything dishonest.

frazzle26 · 14/05/2011 21:43

The washing machine repairman isn't going to care how you broke it (even assuming it was your fault in the first place) it's only his job to fix it. When I broke my boiler I didn't mention I'd been fiddling with the taps and he fixed it and the landlord didn't charge me. Say as little as possible.
