to want a car seat for a Porsche 911?

blue2711 · 13/05/2011 09:41

I know, I know: a ridiculous car and not the right topic area either. I have posted in Car Seats too but am needing help urgently so thought I'd risk the wrath and post here too.

My DH has just bought a 911 and wants to be able to use it with me and our DS who is 21m. It'll just be for weekends, but it would be nice to be able to go out in it all together.

However, I am anxious about the car seat situation. Porsche offer a Junior car seat for Ds's age/size, but it is £350 and also I would feel much happier buying a reputable make, such as Britrax or Maxi Cosi.

Does anyone have a car seat in the back of a 911 and if so, which one?? Need to buy it today, ideally, and have searched and searched the internet without success so am turning to Mumsnet in desperation!

Thanks.

My porsche 911 is in the garage just now so I cant tell you. Wink

SOrry, not v. helpful.

Have you contacted them about alternatives to their own overpriced car seat?

MollieO · 13/05/2011 09:46

Why don't you go to Mothercare and see what fits? Can't really see the problem as you don't have to worry about airbags etc. I had to get a special seat for my two seater that had a transponder to turn off the air bag.

ShatnersBassoon · 13/05/2011 09:46

Have a look on the Britax website at their Fit Finder thing. It will tell you which seats, if any, are suitable.

squeakytoy · 13/05/2011 09:47

Isnt the junior car seat meant for going in the passenger seat?

My stepson had a Boxter and I am fairly sure that it is illegal to fit a rear seat in the back of a two seater car. I could be wrong, but they could never go out in it as a family (and it caused many arguments when he bought it because of this).

Mumswang · 13/05/2011 09:47

Kiddy infinity whatsit. We have one in our similarly impractical car

OTheHugeManatee · 13/05/2011 09:50

Found a similar thread on pistonheads - that any use?

Grin at the idea of a 911 with a child seat

blue2711 · 13/05/2011 09:53

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I was worried I was going to get attacked! The 911 does have a back seat, it's just very small...

Off to look at Brittax site and the kiddy infinity now.

squeakytoy... it's because I don't want arguments that I'm so keen to find a seat!

Thanks again for your help.

Doesn't the 911 have seats in the back? If it doesn't that might explain the OP's difficulty in finding a seat to fit!

Fwiw I can recommend the Mercedes car seat which cancels out the air bag in my MX5.

MichaelaS · 13/05/2011 09:59

Where abouts are you physically, and why do you have to get a seat today?

I wanted a rear facing seat for my toddler and searched all over. Many places stocked one only but I wanted to look at them and get advice. I ended up driving all the way to Milton Keynes from east london to this place:

www.incarsafetycentre.co.uk/contact.html

They were amazing, they stock a large range of forward facing and rear facing seats for all sizes of kids and also for special needs kids. They were really helpful and even fit the seat for me and offered to help in future if I ever forgot how to do it (which would be easy given it's quite complicated as its UBER safe and attaches to the car at 6 points)

If you're anywhere near I would try them - or at least give them a call for some advice.

Al0uiseG · 13/05/2011 10:02

Nice problem to have :o

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 13/05/2011 10:05

My BIL had a 911 and was told you can only put a car seat on the front seat, with it being so much more dangerous for children to travel in the front of a car, he swapped it for a Cayenne.

tokentotty · 13/05/2011 10:06

Yes, have two Recaro seats. You have to remove the bases of the back seats to fit them in but fit perfectly. Probably even have one for sale, where are you? Otherwise, EBay....

PatriciaHolm · 13/05/2011 10:07

Porsche car seats are made by Britax, at least they were when we looked into it about 3 years ago, so I wouldn't worry about it if that's the one that fits best!

blue2711 · 13/05/2011 10:07

AlOuise... I know! Cringing at this thread but appreciate the help.

I have heard about incarsafetycentre - we're not too far from Milton Keynes so may well end up going there. Thanks.

Yes, the 911 does have seats in the back, but it's very snug!

Have tried Brittax... no good, they have nothing to fit in the back. And the kiddy infinity looks too restrictive and bulky, I think, though thanks for the suggestion.

Any other suggestions?

tokentotty - is it a big deal to take out the back seat? Not sure DH will be up for that....

tokentotty · 13/05/2011 10:09

Plus, my two (were abt 21 months & just turned 3 when we got ours) absolutely LOVE the 'little noisy car'. Shame ours is going up for sale due to an 'accidental' third child...!

tokentotty · 13/05/2011 10:12

It's no big deal at all. Dh is at work at the moment or I'd get him to explain it all clearly. Besides, if you don't do it it's even more of a wasted car as you'll never get out in it!

FreudianSlipper · 13/05/2011 10:13

the ex has a porsche 911, ds sits in the front in his maxi-cosi seat, if i am in the car too he sits in the back and we are both a little squashed and i am only just touching 5'2

ds is a little obsessed by the car talks about it constantly (he is 3.5), i tell him its called a ford capri :)

Vallhala · 13/05/2011 10:19

Porsche's seats are designed to fit Porsche's cars. I fail to see, other than because of the price and even then it's all relative, why you would distrust a car seat supplied by the manufacturer of the sports car into which you are presumably otherwise happy to place your child. Particularly as the seats are manufactured by Britax to the best of my recollection.

However YABU for owning a 911 (Italian car fan here!) and YABU to put a child into a sports car and spoil the young free and single dream which the manufacturers sell. :o

In future, go for an Alfa or a Masarati!

MollieO · 13/05/2011 10:23

Freudian does the Britax cancel the airbag?

newbroom · 13/05/2011 10:24

When you do get a suitable car seat I dare you to go and park your 911 in the Parent & Child spaces at Sainsburys, hide behind a bush and wait for the MNetters to spot you! Grin

MollieO · 13/05/2011 10:24

Sorry I meant Maxi cosi not Britax! The maxi cosi didn't work with the airbag in my car so I couldn't use it.

blue2711 · 13/05/2011 10:26

I think you might be right, Vallhala... DH first starting driving Porsches when he was young, free and single. I did try and talk him into a Cayenne, and failed! I would have no chance with Alfas or anything else other than an Aston Martin, I'm afraid!

If the Porsche seat fits well then perhaps we will end up going for it, after all. Feel better now that you've told me it's Brittax. And DH can hardly complain about the cost when he's just spent £xxxxxxx on his ridiculous new car...

OP posts:
NeverSayPie · 13/05/2011 10:27

you bought a porsche and are arguing over the price of the car seat? Bit like buying a house and complaining about the price of the door knocker......

tokentotty · 13/05/2011 10:27

Hahahahaha Newbroom, I have experienced the wrath of people winding up for their 'who do you think you are parking here' rants before I roll out, nearly 9 months pregnant and then unbuckle DS & DD who are 3 and 2.
