Not to want my legs commented upon within my hearing?

We have workmen in at work.

Today I am wearing a dress which finishes a couple of inches above the knee, with bare legs and heels.

I just went outside for a cigarette with a colleague and the workmen were sitting on the kerb right outside the door, eating their lunch. I felt very self-conscious walking past them and my (male) colleague told me once we were a safe distance away that they had been looking up my skirt as we passed.

When we went back in, I insisted on going through a different door so we didn't have to walk past them again. But I still had to walk past the open door where they were sitting. And after I'd gone past them and out of sight, I could hear them talking about how great my legs are and wondering if I'd wear a shorter skirt tomorrow!

I'm wearing trousers tomorrow. And maybe a polo neck Grin

But my point is what if he or his friend had overheard the conversation and he had felt uncomfortable or offended by it? Agree with the muff comment being totally out of order but so many people were getting worked up that they were discussing your appearance and you overheard before that part was mentioned. It just reminds me of work where this happens all the time and female colleagues think it's ok to talk about the men's appearances without considering who might overhear, but then get upset when the opposite happens.

To be fair, he probably would have been more offended had he heard me making sicky boak noises when they suggested that he was hot.

Likewise, I'd have been more offended if I'd overheard them saying "her legs are far too lardy for that dress".

don't think anyone should have bare legs in an office - where were your tights lady? (I am 86 you know Wink)

TobyLerone · 10/05/2011 17:42

Tights are gross.

Actually, I was having a discussion with a colleague earlier. She was wearing flesh-toned tights, but the only way I could tell, even up close, was because she had a ladder in them. I was moaning about how I can never find any because the only ones shops seem to have are orange and shiny. She said "they'd match your hair!"

Cowbag!

YANBU.

Years ago, when I was in my early twenties, there was an extensive building project over the road from where I worked and when the weather was nice the builders would all sit outside our building to have their lunch. I couldn't walk past without some comment or other ? didn't matter what I was wearing. And to make matters worse, when it got dark they could see in to where I was sitting and used to make stupid schoolboy gestures etc.

None of it was threatening etc but after weeks and weeks of this I began to feel really uncomfortable, I don't know why morons think this sort of thing is acceptable/funny. Luckily I worked with some protective dad-age men and my boss rang the company that employed them ? stopped instantly.

They are thick F..k workmen - what do you expect? That was probably the most insightful, perceptive comment they made that day.

TobyLerone · 11/05/2011 11:12

What? Manual labourers are thick now?

(It's very unlikely anyone would fancy a smoker, though)

TobyLerone · 11/05/2011 12:09

Shit, Xenia, you're right! I'd better tell my (non-smoking) boyfriend that he'd better stop fancying me sharpish!
