To change to Basics Wet Wipes at 18p a pack?

I guess I'm a snob, although not that much of a snob as to use branded wet wipes or nappies unless they're on offer.
However I do like Sainsbury's fragrance free Little Ones Wet Wipes.I always felt I was getting a good deal at 98p for 80. Last week DP went shopping and returned with the basics wipes instead. He feels they are probably the same product in different packaging. I looked at the ingredients list and didnt really understand a word of it!

Basics Wet Wipes 18p/80
Ingredients
Water, Glycerin, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Parfum, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate.

Little Ones fragrance free Wet Wipes 98p/80
Ingredients Aqua, Phenoxyethanol, Glycerin, Sodium Benzoate, Cetearyl Isononanoate, Alkyl Polyglucoside, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid, Ceteareth-20, Cetearyl Alcohol, Parfum, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetyl Palmitate, Ceteareth-12, Benzoic Acid.

I'm putting it to the MN jury, can anyone understand the ingredients list and can tell me if they are a worse/better product for DC's skin and a multitude of other tasks and/or the environment.

So AIBU to cut costs in this area or must more expensive be better?

I've no idea if one is ecologically better than the other but I can tell you from experience that they do just the same job and no better or worse.

The only gripe I had with them was they are always stuck together which is bloody annoying when you only have one hand free. That stopped me buying them in the end.

chicletteeth · 09/05/2011 15:13

I use basics wet wipes!
To be honest, if you were worried about skin/environment that much, you'd not use wipes at all.
So if you are going to use wipes, which you are, then I would say the basics ones are fine.
Certainly in this particular brand there seem to be more natural ingredients (albeit still chemicals and yes I'm aware deadly nightshade is natural too before some smart Alec points it out) and less added generally so perhaps they're better.
Who knows? Better for he wallet certainly.

Mumwithadragontattoo · 09/05/2011 15:15

Looks similar but not the same. Try the basics ones. If they do the job (ie you don't need to use 5 times as many), they don't make your DC's skin sore, they don't smell unpleasant to you then stick with them. Otherwise buy the other brand.

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 09/05/2011 15:37

I bought the morrisons basics ones as I spotted them at 18p. I was only really planning on using them for emergencies but they are exactly the same as the more expensive own brand ones.

Did noticed that the next time I was in they had went up to 32p per pack, which seemed a rather steep increase, but given they are still 60 odd pence a pack cheaper, I went with them anyway.

I have switched to the tesco cheapy wipes. I will make my son see the light with regards to the loo!

I use the 18p a pack ones-they are slightly smaller but imo fab!

2BoysTooLoud · 09/05/2011 15:52

I use 18p Tescos value. Use 2 at a time for some yuk but moister than lot of wipes and fragrance free. Can't really justify getting more expensive ones at mo.

MrsCholmondleyWarner · 09/05/2011 15:53

OP - are you me???

Have just switched to/from the same products and was wondering the same! We have a few packets of the Fragrance Free ones left and thought I'd alternate them for the time being, just in case the cheapo ones were harsh on DD's skin. But so far, so good and it's saving us pennies until we can be nappy free...

IgnoringTheChildren · 09/05/2011 15:56

Well for a start aqua = water so the main ingredient in both is the same! If you are concerned about what's in them the cheaper wipes have a shorter ingredient list. Ultimately the test will always be how well do they work! Grin

saladfingers · 09/05/2011 15:57

Good to know others use them but are you embarrassed to get them out in public?

colditz · 09/05/2011 15:59

I use morrison's basics for face and hand cleaning whe we are out and about, and if anything, they seem milder than branded. if you're bothered about the look of it, put them ina little bag.

colditz · 09/05/2011 15:59

And the only people who would judge you are too stupid to have an opinion worth valuing.

2rebecca · 09/05/2011 16:01

In the house I just used to use kitchen roll and warm water, much better for skin and environment than nasty chemical filled wipes.

Glitterknickaz · 09/05/2011 16:03

I used some once, can't remember if they were Tossco or Asda. They were oily bits of net and I got poo all over my fingers. Went straight back to standard Asda.

dolldaggabuzzbuzz · 09/05/2011 16:06

Last week I bought the 18p wipes to wipe my hands with after eating the hot chicken at sains. I'm now using them for DS. They're only for conveniently wiping his hands/face/bum I won't bother with the branded ones anymore.

HairyBeaver · 09/05/2011 16:08

I use the Tesco basics wipes at home and when out and about I use Tescos better branded ones because they have the plastic lid on them.

euphrosyne · 09/05/2011 16:11

Thanks for starting the thread OP!
I was wondering the same, plus would you use these 18p ones for other stuff like hands, face...?

YABalittlebitU for being embarrassed using them in public though. Smile

icooksocks · 09/05/2011 16:15

What the fuck??? Who actually pays attention to what other wipes people use?? Actually I don't give a fuck because I get them out of my £80 Pink Lining-Yummy Mummy bag Grin

tallulahxhunny · 09/05/2011 16:19

weird, i just bought the 18p tesco ones today too, i usually use pampers sensitive but the kids use them for everything from cleaning thier glasses to wiping their faces and trainers Biscuit so i thought why pay over a quid more than i have too!

LittleMissFlustered · 09/05/2011 16:22

The only thing I don't like is that the plastic rips easily on the packet. I have rummaged out the huggies wipe box things I had from some freebie pack or another years ago. Sorted!

TheSimpleLife · 09/05/2011 16:28

I've used the Morrisons and Adsa value/ basics wipes at 18p a pack and find them great. No problems at all. Not embarrassed to use them, plus who actually looks at other peoples wipes? If they work for you, why pay more money for something that just goes in the bin?

BlooferLady · 09/05/2011 16:30

Dear God in heaven, women are judging each other on how expensively they wipe their children's arses now? Shock Shock

OP, YANBU.

fatlazymummy · 09/05/2011 16:30

I buy the 98p ones [though I no longer have a baby]. I find the basics a little small for my purposes. I never found them to be harmful though and would definitely buy them if I was short of funds. I have also used other Sainsbury basic toiletries eg the shower gel and found them fine.
I've got to say that this is the 1st time I have ever heard of anyone reading the ingredients on a pack of wipes. It would never occur to me to do such a thing.

QueenofDreams · 09/05/2011 16:31

I use the sainsbury's basics wipes they're better than some branded ones IMO
