To change to Basics Wet Wipes at 18p a pack?

I guess I'm a snob, although not that much of a snob as to use branded wet wipes or nappies unless they're on offer.
However I do like Sainsbury's fragrance free Little Ones Wet Wipes.I always felt I was getting a good deal at 98p for 80. Last week DP went shopping and returned with the basics wipes instead. He feels they are probably the same product in different packaging. I looked at the ingredients list and didnt really understand a word of it!

Basics Wet Wipes 18p/80
Ingredients
Water, Glycerin, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Parfum, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate.

Little Ones fragrance free Wet Wipes 98p/80
Ingredients Aqua, Phenoxyethanol, Glycerin, Sodium Benzoate, Cetearyl Isononanoate, Alkyl Polyglucoside, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid, Ceteareth-20, Cetearyl Alcohol, Parfum, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetyl Palmitate, Ceteareth-12, Benzoic Acid.

I'm putting it to the MN jury, can anyone understand the ingredients list and can tell me if they are a worse/better product for DC's skin and a multitude of other tasks and/or the environment.

So AIBU to cut costs in this area or must more expensive be better?

Ha ha, I've got friends who find cheaper brands of nappies fine and use them on their DC's at home, but will only send them to nursery with Pampers in case the nursery staff judge them.

Simple Shock TELL me you are joking?

Saints and all the angels in heaven preserve us. Who fucking cares?!?! They're going to get full of shit then thrown away!

all of those using the basics wipes, are you actually using them for wiping pooey bums, or for general wiping of faces and hands when out and about? i tried the Tesco Value 18p ones, and they could not handle dd1's poo. it took me about a third of the packet just to clean up a toddler nappy. sainsbury's own brand have a better cost:absorbancy ratio IME.

"Dear God in heaven, women are judging each other on how expensively they wipe their children's arses now?"

What she said.

Fair enough to prefer 1 or the other because of consistency or you like the smell or you feel they're stronger or bigger. But for fucking branding? You have to be joking.

I frequently use the basics babywipes.

Not quite to the point but I did notice that our Lidl car park was choc full of BMWs and Audis on Saturday, no need to be ashamed of getting a bargain.

TheSimpleLife · 09/05/2011 16:43

No, sorry I'm not joking. I have openly mocked them in jest.

18p cheapo wipes are fantastic for cleaning DS's trainers.

BooBooGlass · 09/05/2011 17:32

Morrisons 18p wetwipes are bloody fabulous. The cupboard under my sink is packed with them as I bulk buy them, once I went in and they were 36p (the horror) so I stocked up the next day when they went back down. They are NO different to any other brand I've bought. I didn't rate tesco or sainsbury basic ones though, I tried them after the Morrisons ones were so good. They were far too thin.

overthemill · 09/05/2011 17:32

my very eczema ridden dd is not allergic to any basics wet wipes but is to lots of branded ones. Also I like products with few ingredients - less chance of allergies.
As for snobbery - daft!

NinkyNonker · 09/05/2011 17:37

I tried them, but they are so thin they're pretty crap. I now use cheap wetter flannels for mealtimes, one per meal inc a highchair wipe down. Cut up old towel and flannels into reusable wipes for nappy changing. Just keep a little spray bottle of water with tea tree oil in by the changing area and in bag. Saves money and waste.

just changed to the basics last week after 5 years of using the 98p onces. IMO the basics are much better; both my boys have eczema & always complain that wipes sting them. Amazingly these wipes don't & from a look at the ingreidents (i did that too before buying them!) they have far less chemicals in them. Just wish i had started using them 5 years ago instead of when my youngest is nearly toliet trained.
