can't bloody stand it. I am the only cook in my house, I slave over it, the kids whinge, then I don't want it.

Hate hate hate it, its so bloody boring.

so instead I made a rather nice spaghetti and tomatoes meatball dish thingy with added courgettes, onions, aubergines and garlic.

and the kids and dp ate it without moaning

Do whatever you like to eat!

Occasionally I do the sunday roast thing if I'm in the mood, and don't find it a massive faff, but wouldn't feel obliged to make it if you don't want to.

Is there some sort of rule that says you're supposed to make a roast on sunday?

Beamur · 08/05/2011 19:06

We never have one. My DP doesn't like them at all.
Its a rare treat for me!

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 08/05/2011 19:06

I dont do traditional roast either on a Sunday, Ill do it on whatever day I fancy! Today we had spinach & ricotta canneloni & salad :)

squeakytoy · 08/05/2011 19:06

YANBU, we are having jambalaya with cheesy garlic bread :)

I dont mind a sunday roast, but we really only have them about once a month in winter...

bibbitybobbityhat · 08/05/2011 19:07

Its not the law!

I love a Sunday roast but probably only have them about once a month, if that.

lisianthus · 08/05/2011 19:08

Why would you make something no-one likes?

mumblechum1 · 08/05/2011 19:08

Tandoori chicken here tonight, it smells yum!

florencedougal · 08/05/2011 19:09

i love sunday roast, would have it every day if i could

MmeBlueberry · 08/05/2011 19:10

How hard is a roast? Just bung it in the oven!

Maybeitsbecause · 08/05/2011 19:10

We sack off doing roast dinners in about April and don't resume until autumn.
I do love a good roast, but I couldn't have one 52 weeks of the year. We had a lovely Japanese salmon dish instead tonight.

Ragwort · 08/05/2011 19:10

Why are you cooking a sunday roast if no one is enjoying it (including yourself)? Personally I LOVE a sunday roast but neither DH or DS are that keen; just shared a frozen pizza with DS - very dull Sad.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 08/05/2011 19:12

I like a roast because it is dead easy and minimum cooking time (also DH does the veg). But we don't have it every Sunday, that would be extremely boring.

Main thing is that we all eat together, doesn't matter what we eat...

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 08/05/2011 19:12

Sausage casserole for dh and I tonight.

But I do love a roast dinner so YABU for not liking them Wink

ZZZenAgain · 08/05/2011 19:13

it's just a meal in the end. If you don't enjoy it, eat something else. I like a roast now and again but we don't have one every sunday because we're out and about

sheepgomeep · 08/05/2011 19:14

well my family do like it but i just find the whole thing so stressful to do (and messy) they only whinge because one likes hard veg and another wants soft veg, then I can never get the potatoes right. I know theres no hard and fast rule about sunday dinners but people where I live seem to have them every week and its a big thing in a lot of families here, they all get together over it and I don't know and this is going to sound bonkers but I just didn't want to deprive my kids Grin

Like maybeitsbecause, we rarely have a roast dinner between late spring and early autumn. I LOVE a good roast, but only really when it's cold outside and the kitchen gets all warm and steamed up when I'm cooking it.

Who is expecting you to cook one?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 08/05/2011 19:15

It's not a faff. I am the shittiest cook in the world, seriously, and, having put some chicken breasts in the oven an hour ago I decided to do a 'roast' and have got roasties and yorkies in the oven as well now. Some veg, slosh of gravy, job done.

sheepgomeep · 08/05/2011 19:16

oh its easy to cook enough but I just hate doing it. And I don't particularly like them anyway. of course its different if someone else makes it which is NEVER

I used to hate Sunday dinners with a passion because
my mother really couldn't cook. Dried meat, stewed veg, shrivelled brown/black potatoes and watery gravy except for the memorable occasion when Dad made the gravy to prove a point (he overdid the cornflour and we had to spoon it out in gelatinous lumps :) ).

Now I can cook them, I love them. Sadly not this Sunday, though. We've been at a competition and we're sat in Burger King and I feel like the worst mother in the world!
So no, I don't think you're unreasonable at all.

BitOfFun · 08/05/2011 19:17

DP is cooking ours right now, I love a good Sunday dinner. It's a bit late because we didn't get up until lunchtime but I don't mind that.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 08/05/2011 19:18

Sorry, yes, meant to say it doesn't have to be a faff, not suggesting it's beyond you Blush

sheepgomeep · 08/05/2011 19:19

No one is expecting me to cook it, dp has just said that I have to0 high expectations of myself and who cares if we don't have a roast every sunday.

oh I don't know, I know I'm not a shit cook far from it but I just have an aversion to roasts Grin

I think thats it tanith, my sunday dinners as a kid were at times inedible, I'm still traumatised by my mums yorkshire puddings. I was amazed when I saw a normal one in my late teens

Sheepgomeep - how old are your dc? Are they old enough that you could start training them to make you a roast sunday lunch, or is that still a way in the future?

We are having roast gammon, new potatoes, peas, sweetcorn and parsley sauce, and I can hardly wait! And on Tuesday I am going to do cold gammon with broccoli and dauphinoise potatoes - yum yum yum.
