On Tuesday I nipped to the library - outside the library was a group of schoolchildren aged about 8 with 3 ladies who I assumed were helpers or teaching assistants......as I got closer my blood began to boil Angry this 'woman' I presumed she was the teacher (it was later confirmed)was quite honestly screeching her head off and pointing with force into a young childs face saying theyd spoilt it on thursday and were now doing it again ....this tirade of madness went on for quite a while I pointedly stood there staring at the woman in the hopes Id shame her into stopping - I wanted to approach her and tell her to stop but because there were a lot of children there I didnt think this was wise - another lady stood there too absolutely astounded and as the screeching subsided we went into the library together - the front of our library is the tourist information bit and the ladies at the desk were shocked too.

As I went into the actual library the assistant asked me if there was a fight outside? the noise was that bad.

The teacher walked by with her class of very subdued children without any remorse or hint of shame ......this really played on my mind those children were far too young to be barracked like this and so I telephoned the school and reported it to the headmaster.

I know it was the right thing to do but I feel bad I couldnt do anything directly at the time to stop her.

You did the right thing.

squeakytoy · 07/05/2011 19:01

What had the child done?

You dont know, do you? So yes, you quite possibly were being a bit of a nosepoke.

Goblinchild · 07/05/2011 19:03

Whatever the child had done, shrieking extensively at him was inappropriate.
So I think YANBU OP.

bittersweetvictory · 07/05/2011 19:05

You were quite right, if it had been me i would have confronted her and told her i was reporting her, maybe the child was being naughty but in this day and age the teacher was being out of order, i hope the child involved told their parents so she can be doubly reported.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 07/05/2011 19:07

OMG she was Shock screeching! He could have melted. Thank god you were there.

nickschick · 07/05/2011 19:08

I hope it was your child then squeaky toy.

Regardless of what that child had done she should not have been shouting like that and if she shouts like that in public who knows what she does behind her classroom door?

Im a nursery nurse and I can tell you that when Ive had a class of children they know im cross when I speak v quietly .........

OP posts:
wotnochocs · 07/05/2011 19:09

one person's excessive shrieking is another person's telling off.

nickschick · 07/05/2011 19:09

Evenless she was really screeching and pointing repeatedly into his face.

Inappropriate for someone who is supposed to be an educator.

OP posts:
heartsnflowers · 07/05/2011 19:10

Child may have pushed another child into road or something.Agree the shouting not good though

UrsulaBuffay · 07/05/2011 19:10

Have seen various teachers do this in the past, bringing kids to tears sometimes. It's their 'style' of teaching- I was too soft, could never ever have done that. I left the profession.

nickschick · 07/05/2011 19:10

Well if there was at least 8 adults shocked by it I think its a fair marker to assume it was extreme.

OP posts:
anonymosity · 07/05/2011 19:11

YANBU I am astonished anyone could say otherwise. That kind of behaviour is not discipline, its abusive and completely unnecessary.

What did the Head say?

troisgarcons · 07/05/2011 19:11

OMG! How awful! A child being reprimanded

(((bubble wrap)))

nickschick · 07/05/2011 19:12

Heartsnflowers it wasnt near a road and there was a minibus parked in the area for the children - it was v extreme, like I said Ive worked in schools some of the best teachers shout but this was an entirely different level.

OP posts:
Happygomummy · 07/05/2011 19:12

puffin : "he could have melted"

Ha ha ha! Love it!!

nickschick · 07/05/2011 19:13

The head was very interested and agreed it wasnt appropriate everyone gets stretched everyone can have a bad day but this was unacceptable.

OP posts:
anonymosity · 07/05/2011 19:13

But WOT DID THE HEAD say?

hocuspontas · 07/05/2011 19:15

How do you know it was a teacher though? It might have been 3 parent helpers. If it was less than, say, 15 children then the class may have just been split into groups and this one didn't have any staff with it. It just sounds unlike a teacher that's all.

ongakgak · 07/05/2011 19:15

Very poor teaching, even if they had done something very dangerous- running onto the road maybe? You can't lose the plot like that, it is not on and brings shame to the profession.

nickschick · 07/05/2011 19:17

Word for word?

Hed already had a telephone call about it.
He asked me what Id heard said, what the person looked like and what the child looked like, how were the other children, did any of the other adults(with the group) say anything......he said it wasnt appropriate, and certainly wasnt acceptable , and he was v concerned and would be investigating this -he asked for my name and phone number and thanked me.

flopsiebear · 07/05/2011 19:18

If I walked past and a teacher was screeching and pointing in the face of my child they would be missing a few teeth shortly after. It is not a teachers place to point in a childs face and if they can not tell off a child without being aggressive then they are in the wrong job

nickschick · 07/05/2011 19:18

Hocus it was the teacher the head confirmed it.

OP posts:
ongakgak · 07/05/2011 19:19

well done op children so young should not be ranted at like that. sounds like the member of staff is going to get it on Monday. I would be shitting myself if I was the teacher, or TA or whomever.

florencedougal · 07/05/2011 19:19

they would be missing a few teeth shortly after.

great, the kids would love that :(

anonymosity · 07/05/2011 19:21

Well done. You got the right response too - by the sound of it.
