to think cat owners should clear up cat shit in little plastic bags

like dog owners do ?

every spring i clear the flower beds and every spring the neighbourhood cats take this as a signal to use it as their toilet.

dirty bastards. I know i should blame the owners for not providing them with a litter tray but AIBU to think an air rife and some slugs might be the quckest way to end this menace?

Um, I don't provide a litter tray?! Cats are free, they go where they go......

TyIsAnob · 07/05/2011 08:53

We always have a cat that sits at the bottom of the garden, just staring, winding the dogs up as they cant get to it.
I dont like or dislike cats, but think people wouldnt see it the same if my dogs jumped the fence and shit in there gardens. YANBU but maybe the rifle part is Grin

Confuzzeled · 07/05/2011 09:13

Yeah, I'm going to get the British Hedgehog Preservation Society to clean the oily streaky poo off my patio every morning. Or maybe I can start shooting the birds that crap on my car windscreen.

Mumofaflump · 07/05/2011 09:20

linerunner we have one of those. It works on a motion sensor so you have to be in range to set it off. Works a treat as well!

tulpe · 07/05/2011 09:22

YABU because cats unfortunately do shit wherever they please.

However, if I catch my cats shitting in the neighbours' flowerbeds of their front gardens then actually I do go and clean it up with a poop bag (as used regularly when walking my dog).

You can get some garlic scented capsules from the garden centre which work really well (I have used them to good effect when the multitude of local moggies decided my front lawn was the perfect place to defecate).

Keep in mind that dogs get walked, so they almost always have a owner with them who can clear up their poop. Cats get let out and wander on their own, so their butler has no idea where they might have pooped. To be fair, cats do normally bury it but that's not fun for you who digs through your soil to plant new flowers. Some cat repellent or a cat scarer might be the best trick.

lilbod · 07/05/2011 09:33

I have read numerous threads about dog owners not cleaning up shit, yet for cats it's different, even though cat shit can carry simelar toxins as dog shit.
the OP was a little clumsy to say the least but she has a point (not about the air riffle pure disgusting)

But why is it OK for cats to shit where they like?

Ilythia · 07/05/2011 09:33

You're going to shoot slugs out of a gun?
You sadist.

Ilythia · 07/05/2011 09:35

It's a good point though. I will ask neighbours to climb over my garden wal every night and pick up the catshit from my pots. That should fix it.

nethunsreject · 07/05/2011 09:38

I keep a water pistol handy for my neighbour's cat. I like cats, but why can they rarely shit in their own garden?

lilbod · 07/05/2011 09:42

lion turd really works a friend of mind ordered some to keep the cats away, just piled it up under his window and ta-da no more cats, however the shit smelled so rancid it lingered for months I think he eventually moved out!

lilbod · 07/05/2011 09:44

can your neighbours use the gate? a bit mean to make them hurdle over fences!

TapselteerieO · 07/05/2011 09:50

Cats don't like crapping in their own garden, I provide a clean litter tray for my cat but she chooses to go elsewhere. If I knew where and it was absolutely my cat, I would clean up after her.

My Mum puts very thorny twigs wherever there is a clear space in her flower beds - this deters the local moggies. A water pistol can work too.

Paschaelina · 07/05/2011 09:52

I do in fact do po patrol most days because my son rolls around on the grass and my dirty bastard cats crap anywhere they please but I'm damn well not follwing th with a scop to catch them in the act.

Paschaelina · 07/05/2011 09:53

iPhone keyboard too small for my fingers

Hmpphh

GwendolineMaryLacey · 07/05/2011 10:00

I do think the op has a point, because people choose to have a cat, they open the door for it and then don't give a toss where it goes or what it does. So using hedgehogs and birds as a defence is stupid. If you have a pet then is your job to be responsible for it.

tulpe · 07/05/2011 10:01

Ilythia - I think it is reasonable that people should be asked to clean up their cat's crap from a neighbours garden but only if you can say for sure that it was left by their cat. Cats wander for miles sometimes. You can't be certain that it is necessarily next doors' cat.

However, it won't sort the problem because unless you actively deter the cat whilst it is either preparing or in the act of pooping, it will return to it's favourite toilet spot regardless.

nethunsreject · 07/05/2011 10:05

Indeed, Gwendoline

Ilythia · 07/05/2011 10:05

tulpe, that's the point though re cats vs dogs, I have no clue whose cat has done it, whereas dogs are normally being walked when they shit, hence the own er can clean it up.
I was kidding btw.

tulpe · 07/05/2011 10:06

Gwendoline - I agree but then what is the solution? (am looking for genuine debate, btw, not a fight :) )

Do we keep cats indoors? Not fair on the cats imo.

Not realistic to keep 24 hour watch on an outdoor cat. My cats spend all day in their baskets indoors and only go out for a brief period. However, as soon as it is dark they are off out and up to whatever cats do. No way I can monitor that.

You can offer a cat a litter tray but IME cats will wander off to poop because they don't like to crap in their own territory/garden.

Or do we say cats are too much of a pest because of fouling issues and should not be kept as pets anymore?

tulpe · 07/05/2011 10:12

Ilythia - understood you were joking.

Am just saying that if you caught my cat crapping in your garden and came to me and said as much then I would have no problem coming in to your garden to clean it up. And I would like to think most people would do the same. I guess the answer becomes "no" when the neighbour assumes its next doors' cat without actually having witnessed it, iyswim.

I would even go as far as buying you some of that repellant stuff. If it is my cat then why shouldn't I take responsibility for it? Cleaning up cat shit is vile but my cat, my shit to deal with :o

Not sure how many others would agree with that though.

StuckinTheMiddlewithYou · 07/05/2011 10:15

Soil is full of crap. Mouse crap, bird crap, worm crap, dog crap, fox crap, cat crap.

Really not getting what the fuss is.

If you're that concerned buy repellent.

Ilythia · 07/05/2011 10:26

I am joking because afaik my neighbour does not have a cat. I would not ask someone to come and clean up catshit because you can never tell it is there cat. That is my point.

Ilythia · 07/05/2011 10:26

oh god, I put there instead of their!
