Son's 5th birthday imminent so busy spending hard earned cash on utter crap. The feminist, tomboy bit of me wants to do same party bags for everyone coming to his party as I cringe at stereotyping girls as wanting princess stuff, but I don't have daughters and my sons are both absolutely stereotypical boys and want Ben 10 everything.

What do I doooooo? (and don't say don't have party bags because son has made it quite clear he will kill me with his laser blasting gun if we don't have them)

Just get plain unisex "Happy Birthday" bags. They are usually cheaper anyway.

ProfYaffle · 05/05/2011 15:32

My 2 girls have both had boysy party bags and not minded in the slightest. I also gave the only boy at dd1's birthday party a pink butterfly party bag - although I did choose rather gender neutral stuff to put in it, ball, pencils etc in primary colours. I think the general party excitement takes over tbh.

Eglu · 05/05/2011 15:34

YANBU. A lot of girls I know like Ben 10 anyway. Why buy generic or girly ones. My boys have had pink girly bags before.

fluffyanimal · 05/05/2011 15:34

What Insomnia said. My ds recently had his 5th birthday with Ben 10 plates, cups and tablecloths, but plain unisex party bags. He didn't care and nor did anyone else.

SarkyLady · 05/05/2011 15:36

Of course it is fine.

I don't know of any proven (or even suspected) cases of Ben10 allergies.

lililolo · 05/05/2011 15:41

My daughter loves princesses and all that, but wouldn't mind Ben 10 at all if that's what her friend liked.

Ephiny · 05/05/2011 15:52

I'm sure it'll be fine, the girls almost certainly are immersed in a sea of pink the rest of the time so it won't kill them to have something non-pink/princessy just for once!

tallulahxhunny · 05/05/2011 16:05

my daughter would be delighted with ben 10 bag, tbh i dont htink kids ccare whats on the outside as long as there are decent goodies inside

whendotheyleavehome · 05/05/2011 16:05

Thank you very much folks. Sanity restored.

Gosh, I bought Spiderman bags for ds's 5th bday party last December. Never even occurred to me until now that it might be a problem for the girls Blush

BibiBelle · 05/05/2011 21:05

My 5yr old daughter would be horrified and very upset if she didn't get it. She was distraught that Santa got her a doll this year and the boys got hot wheels stuff Grin

not all little girls want pink and frills - go with it!

Whatevertheweather · 05/05/2011 21:05

My DD (4) would flippin' love a ben 10 party bag - she loves it and dreams of her own omnitrix! (sp?)

abitlikemollflanders · 05/05/2011 21:06

Doubt they will notice, they'll be too busy looking at what's inside:)

Ismene · 05/05/2011 21:10

My DD wouldn't love getting a Ben 10 bag, but that is because she doesn't like Ben 10. She doesn't like Barbie either, so it is not a boy/girl thing. However, she has manners enough now that she certainly wouldn't mention it!

DontCallMeBaby · 05/05/2011 21:11

Go for it. DD is pink and princessy with a rather over-developed idea of what is and isn't for girls and boys (sigh) but is also rather keen on Ben 10.

I'd suggest any little girls who 'howl' on being presented with a Ben 10 bag be cheerfully invited to give it back and go without.

MercurySoccer · 05/05/2011 21:17

YANBU

foreverondiet · 05/05/2011 21:43

I think it's fine. I'm giving horrid henry to wholereception class and i didn't even think about it not being ok.

PurveyorOfBaloney · 05/05/2011 21:46

My 4yo DD would die with excitement to be given a Ben 10 bag. She only has a vague idea of what Ben 10 is, but she is already obsessed!

madworld78 · 05/05/2011 21:48

Defo fine. I have a dd and as she invites lots of boys I got generic party bags. However, the contents of both is the same. At one party dd got hair bands in her bag and the boys got toys including a water pistol. She wolud have loved that.

BoosMaw · 05/05/2011 21:53

Ben 10 all round would be best option. My 5yo DD loves Ben 10, and I kinda dislike it at parties when the hosts do different bags for boys and girls, it's gender stereotyping at its worst. (OK maybe not the worst, it's not on a par with giving the crappiest jobs to part-time workers, or such, but it still riles me).

Ben 10 is fab.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 05/05/2011 21:54

For DS's (also vaguely Ben 10-themed) 5th birthday party I did "Ben 10" bags and more general bags, although the contents of both were unisex, and gave each child on leaving a choice. The boys did gravitate towards the Ben 10 bags and the girls towards the "not Ben 10" bags, but plenty of boys opted for the non-Ben option and plenty of girls for the Ben option.

I knew there were several children who didn't watch Ben 10 (and facing facts I knew that the majority of those were girls) or whose parents disapproved of it for the age group, so I wanted to offer some alternative without straying into girls vs. boys territory.

But if you have a life want to streamline then making all the bags Ben 10 is just fine.

Housemum · 05/05/2011 22:01

DD2 had Ben 10 pyjamas as a 7th birthday present from a boy she'd invited - she thought they were fab! If thre are girls at the party they are girls who like playing with boys, so keep all the bags the same. It's so much easier this way round - don't think it would be the same answer if you were giveing bracelets and hairbands to the boys! (Unless they are long haired footballers, I suppose)
