Son's 5th birthday imminent so busy spending hard earned cash on utter crap. The feminist, tomboy bit of me wants to do same party bags for everyone coming to his party as I cringe at stereotyping girls as wanting princess stuff, but I don't have daughters and my sons are both absolutely stereotypical boys and want Ben 10 everything.

What do I doooooo? (and don't say don't have party bags because son has made it quite clear he will kill me with his laser blasting gun if we don't have them)

Even at 9y DD wouldn't mind what was on the outside of a given party bag.

My DD2 would be over the moon at a Ben 10 party bag, she does had her own omnitrix.

The danger with gender stereotyping is a girl like mine who absolutely refuses to have anything to do with girly things and can be quite rude about them.
One birthday party last year had the girls bags containing shiney rings and hair slides whilst the boys had bouncy balls and stickers. Thankfully the mum knew DD2 well enough to make her a boys bag because she would have been quite vocal about her distaste for hair clips and rings.

My dd loves Ben10 too. Apparently Ben10 and Spiderman are her favourites. Except the days when it's Snow White!

DS1 (4) was at a Ben 10 themed party a couple of weeks ago. The entertainer was dressed as Ben 10 and all the games were themed. The girls loved it all as much as the boys (even if some of them may not have been overly familiar with all the terminology). Girls and boys were all given Ben 10 party bags. Would have been weird to have done anything else. Enjoy your party!

wearenotinkansas my daughter loves spiderman too, she even has a spiderman bike.

I know there is a lot of backlash about party bags but I must admit my girls love them. I don't think what's inside (apart from the cake and a few sweets) is important or even what the bag looks like although I do think it's really wasteful if it's just a plastic bag full of fairly useless plastic toys. My daughter is 6 next month and I'm going for zebra and leopard paper bags - fashionable, green, cheap and great for boys and girls - problem solved and no guilt complex!!!

The last (toddler) party we were at had blue bags and pink bags.
DS was given free choice and nabbed a pink one.
I don't think you should worry. (Much as I hate Ben 10!)

My 4yo DD would die with excitement to be given a Ben 10 bag. She only has a vague idea of what Ben 10 is, but she is already obsessed!"

DS is 4 and has been obsessed with Ben 10 for about a year. He has Ben 10 everything. A couple of weeks ago he realised it is a programme on the TV :o which suits me fine, would rather he didn't watch it

LynetteScavo · 06/05/2011 20:50

My DD would be most put out if you tried to give her a girly party bag when there were Ben10 ones going.

mossi · 06/05/2011 20:51

My DD probably wouldn't notice the party bag - just the cake inside. Everything goes I think. Do what you're comfortable with. Half the girls (age 5) in my DD's year like Ben 10. It's your ds's party - they will accept whatever - I really don't think they notice.

Lucy88 · 06/05/2011 22:16

My DS's 6th Birthday party tomorrow and all the boys and girls will get a football party box from me and a Manchester City party bag from the venue (he is having the party at Manchester City).

The girls that are coming have all asked if they will get any City stuff and one girl has asked me if Carlos Tevez will be at the party.

I wouldn't have a clue what to put in a party bag specifically for a girl, so they are all getting football related stuff - whistles, bouncy balls, football pencil and notepad, football chocolates etc.

feedthegoat · 06/05/2011 22:21

Oh my goodness lucy88 my ds would faint at your party! He has made dh order man city bun toppers for his 'FA cup party' next week. It is just the 3 of us Grin.

But back to op, he commented at party last night that he especially liked his 'pretty' Hello kitty party bag! I think they like a change sometimes. We stereotype more than they do sometimes.

DD1 has been the only girl at her friend's 5th and 6th parties; one with an entertainer, the other was football-themed. On both occasions she received the exact same party bag and contents as the boys be that a Horrid Henry book or a collection of whistles, bouncy balls etc. She was thrilled on both occasions too.

She can be as girly as the next girl but, thankfully, at the moment is as happy charging around with a ball as she is twirling around in a 'twirly skirt'.
