Comments about America on mumsnet, really ridiculous comments (basically that all Americans, are fat, stupid, god botherers bent on taking over the world) seem to be largely ignored and accepted as fact in a way that comments about any other country never would.

Blatant sexism, racism, xenophobia, disablism would never be tolerated on MN in any other circumstance. Why do people let it go about Americans?

Ah. Thank you. We all seem to have done odd things with gelatine in the 70s Grin Layered savory terrines here.

valiumredhead · 05/05/2011 16:42

thumbwitch my New Yorker friend told me this and she is the most amazing cook EVER! Grin

8oz always works for me!

TechLovingDad · 05/05/2011 16:46

In the interests of balance I also mock Jamie Oliver for his big tongue and poncey "everyone can do what I do" attitude. Grin

YankNCock · 05/05/2011 16:47

Puffin, now that you say it, that Eddie Izzard thing does ring a bell.

Some people also put marshmallows in sweet potatoes too.

I made proper peanut butter rice krispies squares recently with big marshmallows from Costco. It's freaky going in there and seeing brand names you'd completely forgotten existed!

Want2bSupermum · 05/05/2011 16:48

I have never seen a marshmallow salad. I presume it is a jelly with marshmallow in it and is probably from the south.

Cup measurements were annoying at first but I LOVE them now. It makes portion control so much easier. DH laughs at my stack of cups but it has enabled me to control my weight. I use a scale when baking.

Ina makes amazing cocktails.

VajazzHands · 05/05/2011 17:00

Was distracted by my big fat american baby Grin

I don't approve of marshmallows as a veggie.Although I remeber a time when I was young and smores were mthe best things EVER.

Think Yankncock is correct about jelly fruit marmallow salad type things being a 70's embarrasment though.

Although in Europe people but bits of meat in to jelly and slice it off and eat it. Which must be the most unholy thing ever created by man

Terrines are odd. 70s cooking was never fully eradicated in small pockets around the world it would seem.

I'm very relieved about the marshmallows.

Do we really have a culture anymore? We're so busy borrowing everyone elses to cover up the embarrassment that is Morris dancing!

Animation · 05/05/2011 17:08

We also tease Ina, in an affectionate way mind, for her Pollyanna ways - glad glad glad. Smile

valiumbandwitch · 05/05/2011 17:11

I think people mean american policies when they make anti american comments. and tbh, the sheer size of america and their influence over the rest of the world mean that america's take matters.

But rudeness to a particular american is rude. I have two old friends and one is married to a french man and the other to an american. later we were all shocked by how anti-american the french husband was. we are just beginners compared with the french!

My dad's a real Rosemary Shrager fan himself.

isn't the cheese eating surrender monkey line from The Simpsons? It's what Homer calls the French.

TechLovingDad · 05/05/2011 17:18

Are you French Darth? It's a quote from the Simpsons, I believe. No idea of it's origin.

Admittedly at work, we all rib each other about everything. My half French colleague is asked where his white flag is, etc. He calls me German and heckles me for invading his desk, if I get too close.

We're a very thick skinned team but work and play well together.

My FIL is Jamaican. He clearly remembers being spat at in the street when he was a young man here. His take is "if you fight everytime someone says or does something you don't like, you'd never stop".

Admirable but I'm not sure I could do the same as him.

I hate when people say "I'm only joking" when you can feel the undercurrent of true negativity is there.

TechLovingDad · 05/05/2011 17:27

Also, MadameDeathStare, I'm English, blonde, white and quite tall. Effectively I'm an Aryan WASP. I'm not part of a minority, nor has my ethnic group ever been the subject of persecution. It's easy to shrug things off when "we make all the rules" as I say to DW Grin.
