Comments about America on mumsnet, really ridiculous comments (basically that all Americans, are fat, stupid, god botherers bent on taking over the world) seem to be largely ignored and accepted as fact in a way that comments about any other country never would.

Blatant sexism, racism, xenophobia, disablism would never be tolerated on MN in any other circumstance. Why do people let it go about Americans?

Way to go expat's Mum! :) Yes I have heard of bookies but pretty sure they're illegal where I'm from?

We have a lot of casinos in Minnesota, too, because of the population of Anishinaabeg that live here.

My friend has just come back from Phoenix and she said that the Indians own the Casinos there as well. How come? Is it because they have the land to build on? does everyone get along side by side as she said they seemed, I dont know how to put it, kind of on their own in their community. Forgive my ignorance Sad

The reservations are, AFAIK, seen as almost sovereign nations. They have their own police force, etc, and their children can almost never be adopted by people who are not registered members of a tribe. Because the government does not have as much say over what happens on Native land, they can put up casinos if they want I think. But then again I may be talking out my arse.

For the most part, at least in Minnesota, we get along. But people who live "on the rez" are somewhat separated, it's true.
