AIBU?

to not understand grown adults squealing with excitement over Disneyland?

I just don't understand it. Perfectly lovely, sane, normal people. I have FB friends who are as described above, yet are making themselves sick with excitement, counting down the hours and not sleeping because they are off to spend a fortune standing in queues for hours to see an oversized stuffed mouse with a bored student inside or some silly woman dressed as a 'princess'. They are squealing about booking meals with these creatures fgs.

I can understand the children being excited but the children in this case are three and couldn't give a toss! The fuss is all about the adults.

Explain it to me please!

I am so with the OP here. I do not get it. Never have, never will. And yes, I do know grown men (ok, only two of them!) who think it's the all-get-out of fabulous things to do. Thankfully my kids were never interested but even if they had been they'd have got short change from me.

I do think it is very odd when you see middle aged men having pictures taken with just them and a princess. creepy and weird.

I am not a nutter. I am sometimes a squealer.

I just think life should be enjoyed, and who cares if it's 'inappropriate' for grown adults?

Comments like 'Thankfully my kids were never interested but even if they had been they'd have got short change from me' just make me a bit sad.

See that is what I dont understand - some people come across as almost smug if their children shun all things Disney - like it makes them more superior than children who do enjoy it. Strange.

GML - I quite liked butters - sounded kind of like a West country-esque insult Grin

I generally don't get excited about much but Disney World Orlando / Universal Studios / Islands of Adventure / Sea World... SQUEEEEEEEEEAAAAALLLLLL!!! Probably wouldn't do the whole dining with the characters thing without kids but everything else I would. Universal's Mummy ride, Disney's Tower of Terror, Rockin Rollercoaster to name but a few... Excuse me while I squeeeeeeeal!!! Grin

I'm probably a bit of a nutter, but like CJ i think that if i am going to do somthing i might as well make an effort to enjoy it as much as possible. I get very little time that is for enjoyment anyway so I would be delighted to squeal as much as possible Grin It is against the rules in my office sadly.

We were serenaded by a gay male couple at Epcot one year, they knew all the words to the music that accompanies the fireworks!
Gay week is a real laugh at Disney. Smile
I have a photo of DH being snogged by the Grinch at Universal studios, I put it on his facebook profile Grin.
Espresso, how do you know if you've never been?

Here's how I see it.

Adults who embrace, explore and enjoy the myriad of natural and cultural experiences this wonderful world offers are infinitely superior to those that worship at the altar of Disney plastic.

Ah Islands of Adventure - first time on Incredible Hulk ride - squeeeeeel!!!

Report
Whatevertheweather · 05/05/2011 14:15

But the two are not mutually exclusive EspressoDoppio - you can enjoy both.

Now thats really enjoying a 'myriad' of different experiences.

By the way you sound like a real bundle of joy Hmm

Bah humbug Espresso - it doesn't make you superior, just arrogant.

We like to do both actually - we've done The Pyramids/Valley of the kings/Karnak etc. in Egypt, Chichen itza and Tulum in Mexico, The Rocky mountains and we are going to tour China in a few weeks time, amongst others - there is still room in our life for Disney plastic.

I'm with OP. I did get all excited when I was there last time, but that was because I could see my kids enjoying it, and I loved the 'happy' feel about it. But I was agog at the grown-up couples going all goolaly over the place and queuing up to meet Mickey.

Oh I am a right bundle of joy - I'm glad you recognise that! Arrogant? You think? It's only my opinion and I'm not trying to change your mind am I?

I would shoot myself in the very face rather than go to anything Disney. If I ever have children, I will cut the ears off every Mickey Mouse doll in sight and tell them "run, quick, it's a rat, they have DISEASES". Grin

I really really really don't get it. I like being an adult, and have no desire to regress to toddlerdom and wee down my own leg. Now, give me a good rugby match to watch and you will hear all manner of internal and external squealing!

Rocknroller coaster blast off (love in an elevator) SQUEAL!

Report
Shodan · 05/05/2011 14:31

I don't squeal, generally.

But I do get really rather excited.

So excited, in fact, that I have just booked Disney World (Florida) for next year.

We do cultural, natural beauty etc etc too but I love Disney World. Never thought I would, tbh- before we went the first time I was a bit sniffy about it but we had the most fantastic time.

And I am well 'ard.

but too cowardly to do the Tower of Terror

Shodan · 05/05/2011 14:32

Oh yes, Maleficence. There was definitely squealing coming from my car at Rocknrollercoaster blast off.

Grin

For those who don't like the idea of Disney per so - do you enjoy other theme parks? Alton Towers, Thorpe Park etc?

If not I can understand that maybe a fortnight of non-stop theme parks and rollercoasters would be your idea of hell.

That said my Mum - who is too scared to go on the rides at Paultons Park (kiddie theme park) still loves going as she enjoys the atmosphere and the shows etc.
