to not understand grown adults squealing with excitement over Disneyland?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 05/05/2011 08:58

I just don't understand it. Perfectly lovely, sane, normal people. I have FB friends who are as described above, yet are making themselves sick with excitement, counting down the hours and not sleeping because they are off to spend a fortune standing in queues for hours to see an oversized stuffed mouse with a bored student inside or some silly woman dressed as a 'princess'. They are squealing about booking meals with these creatures fgs.

I can understand the children being excited but the children in this case are three and couldn't give a toss! The fuss is all about the adults.

Explain it to me please!

Spring, I live about an hour from The Efteling and have been there a couple of times. I can see why kids like it, especially the under 8s as it is very cute/old fashioned with everything based on sprookjes/fairytales but after a couple of hours I was happy to leave Hmm

I guess I'm just not the theme park type Grin

Our local big supermarket chain are giving out money off vouchers from the Efteling when you spend over Eu20. I could start collecting them for you Spring Grin Wink

I know that Hecate. The point I was making is that I got very excited watching my DS getting such enjoyment out of the puppet show and know that will be the same with things like DL when he is older. I will be excited on his behalf I guess. I am looking forward to showing such things to him and I suppose experiencing things through his eyes rather than my old and cynical ones. So that is MY excitement experienced because of DS. At 3 years old, he won't understand enough to experience the anticipation and looking forward to DL but he probably will be excited when he gets there.

In the same way, my parents and gp's still tell stories of how much they loved taking me to panto as a child and they were all watching me not the panto. I am very excited about taking DS to panto. Despise the things myself (but get the whole British tradition/eccentricity etc) but despite them not being to my taste, I actually do feel a little bit excited about DS experiencing that and no doubt at the time some of my friends will think I am odd for getting excited about a panto! Smile

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 05/05/2011 12:17

yeah, but do you squeal? Grin

bubblecoral · 05/05/2011 12:31

yeah, but do you squeal?

Because my stretch marks and eye wrinkles may say 35, my brain when I get to Orlando says about 8 or 9!

mayorquimby · 05/05/2011 12:34

I wouldn't be 'squealing' with excitement, but Disneyland is awesome tbf

bubblecoral · 05/05/2011 12:38

Gwendoline, not wanting to get into any sort of heated dabate with you, but this in your OP, is what makes you sound jealous.

because they are off to spend a fortune standing in queues for hours to see an oversized stuffed mouse with a bored student inside or some silly woman dressed as a 'princess'. They are squealing about booking meals with these creatures fgs.

Disney in Florida is just so much more than that. I would agree about DLP, but to not get even a little bit excited by what you are surrounded by in Disneyworld, would mean you are a very sedate person. There really is something there for everyone. The water parks, snorkelling with rays, being up close to some stunning animals in Animal Kingdom, the electric parade, the amaxing fireworks display, the terrifying rides, the fun rides where you pretend to be Buzz Lightyear with a zapper, the mini countries in Epcot, the interactive shows, I could go on, but there is just so much stuff there. And that's just the disney parks before you even look at the rest of Orlando.

You really can't judge it until you have been, it is not just a student in an oversized mouse costume.

PassTheTwiglets · 05/05/2011 12:59

I don't see why people are bothered by the sops - er, just don't go in them then! On the whole they look pretty (as they have to fit in with the theming) so they don't detract from the look of the park. But if you want to avoid the merchandise then it's easy! It's just like Alton Towers but pretty :)

The character thing, I can see where you're coming from, OP. We took DD to a character meal and whilst it was brilliant fun from watching the kids, I wouldn't want to do that without the kids. There were several couples there sans kids and I did Hmm at that.

wordfactory · 05/05/2011 13:03

Despite my love of DL, character meals were a step too far for me.

My only concession to a character meal was a character breakfast.
Blueberry pancakes, waffles (with that weird fluffy butter stuff they have in the States), bacon, hash browns softened the blow. Plus it was quick.

wordfactory · 05/05/2011 13:05

Weren't Disney thinking of opening a park in Tokyo?

Now that would be the dog's bollocks no?

Is there a nation more in love with the cute and kitch than the japanese?

MothershipG · 05/05/2011 13:18

I think it's just one of those marmite things, you either love it, or hate it. Personally I love marmite and DL!

But I agree with the other posters that until you've actually been to the Florida one you really can't appreciate what it is like. It is nothing like UK parks and it's even shinier than other US parks. Smile

Having said that we're off to Florida again in couple of weeks, but staying on the Gulf coast side, and I wouldn't trek across the state just to go again.

Mind you I find grown women squealing about anything pretty odd behaviour, guess I'm just not a squealer. Smile

Whatevertheweather · 05/05/2011 13:21

Wordfactory - there is a disneyland Tokyo Grin

OP - I LOVE disneyland and yes I do squeal with excitement if I have a trip planned - I may even be one of your fb friends as I was on there last night commenting on my sisters forthcoming Florida trip Grin

As to why I squeal - I have always loved Disney - but not just Disney I love going to Orlando for everything that is there - Discovery Cove, Islands of Adventure, Universal - Harry Potter World! The weather is fab and the people are generally lovely. I also love California again not just for Disney but I would squeal if I was going there too! I have been both pre and post DC and also when I was child.

I recently went to DLP for the first time - not quite as well done at the US but still loved it and want to go back!!

I like lots of other types of holiday to but I have to admit none would give me the same thrill as USA. But then I do love theme parks anyway - love big rollercoasters. I also get fairly excited about a day trip to Thorpe Park - not too squealing point but I would look forward to it

Maybe i'm just generally an over excitable type person Hmm

SarahBumBarer · 05/05/2011 13:24

I think I might squeal a little bit when I actually get there if DS is as excited as I was. Not beforehand granted Grin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 05/05/2011 13:43

Why does that make me sound jealous? Confused. I accept it may make me sound like I haven't got the first idea about what Disney is like but that's all. I object to the assumption that jealousy is my gripe. My parents are going to China and Hong Kong next week. I freely admit to jealousy there.

I'm asking people to sell it to me, tell me why it's so wonderful, tell me why my friend was in tears of joy.

OP posts:
Whatevertheweather · 05/05/2011 13:47

It doesnt make you sound jealous but it does sound like you have dismissed it as over-priced, over-commercialised shite with no actual idea what is there.

Perhaps if you went you would understand the squealing Grin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 05/05/2011 13:48

Oh I'm happy to admit to that :o

pigletmania · 05/05/2011 13:51

Yabvvvvu, life too short. Why not let em squeal I was the same when I went to disneyGrin

CJCregg · 05/05/2011 13:52

What is so wrong about squealing?

FFS, life is full of bills and mortgages and routines and fucking laundry and supermarkets and car tax and fucking cleaning and not going out enough because you can't afford babysitters.

When you're young, it's perfectly ok to squeal with excitement. As you grow up, you learn to change certain behaviours such as hitting people because they piss you off, throwing your food on the floor if you don't like it and having a tantrum because you can't have the toy you want.

Who said we had to give up the good stuff? Grin

VoteAV · 05/05/2011 13:57

I would squeal if I was going.
