Everyone has converse trainers are they now passe?

A line full of mums and DD's in converse while sitting watching a class, I don't want to be the same, I bought Primark version (£5) and lasted 3 weeks, there's a surprise! Are Vans the new trend? (never been 'on trend') and are they any good? And what does this say the fact I have to ask??

Converse will never be passe. They are a classic. My mum wore them in the 70's (plain white) and I've worn them since my teens. I'm now in my 40's and still wearing them with everything.

TurkeyBurgerThing · 04/05/2011 15:38

Wear what you want! Don't care what other think. If you like them then do it.

JanMorrow · 04/05/2011 15:42

God, I've been wearing them since I was 15 or something, they're comfortable! I don't give a hoot if they're fashionable, although it is annoying that the price of them has gone up so much!

DreamingofFour · 04/05/2011 15:48

I love Converse whether fashionable or not, they are really comfortable and last ages. Suspect they had a low moment in the fashion stakes when David Cameron was seen in them a few years ago though!

ScousyFogarty · 04/05/2011 15:53

Moose. I am not even familiar with the term "converse trainers" Educate meI lover da English language.

SixtyFootDoll · 04/05/2011 16:07

I am still wearing a pair of converse boots that my aunt brought me back from the US when I was 15, I love them as much now as I did wy back then (25 yrs ago)

ScousyFogarty · 04/05/2011 16:17

I had had a spell on trainers. Now I dress for comfort. It gets the women
going. They sometimes come back

JamieAgain · 04/05/2011 16:21

I have the Sainsbury's version, 8 quid, in several colours. The real ones are too narrow and too expensive.

I like the way they look, I don't care if they are passe, but they play havoc with your feet as they are so flat- no arch support

pinkgirlythoughts · 04/05/2011 16:33

I wore Vans when I was in sixth form, then practically lived in Converse all through my time at uni. Now I'm a proper grown-up (kind of ;) ), I still love my Converse, I just don't wear them quite so often any more. I don't think they're that expensive, considering how well they last, and the fact that they're such classics means they'll never go out of fashion.

Insomnia11 · 04/05/2011 16:40

Has the price gone up? I'm sure I paid about £40 for my One Stars in 1995 but about £15 on Amazon for All Stars more recently?

shemademedoit · 04/05/2011 16:51

OK. This thread has reminded me that my youngest asked for these (I don't mind being. The lowtops cost 55 euros here in France. Anywhere online cheaper in the UK? Thanks.

Honeybee79 · 04/05/2011 17:41

I live in them. They're comfortable. What else would I wear?

Admit I will have to review this when returning to work in June.

Moosacat · 04/05/2011 18:04

PersonalClown · 04/05/2011 18:07

I have Vans, Converse and DMs.

Don't care whether they are cool or not. Bloody comfy and come in so many colours/patterns to keep me amused for days!

ComeAlongPond · 04/05/2011 18:08

I bought some navy high tops last week from treds. Cheaper than the other high street shops and my friend works there so I used her staff discount which made them cheaper too, but they were retailing for £36. Office or somewhere similar was selling them for £49!

upahill · 04/05/2011 18:17

I've been wearng Converse All star since I was 12 (I'm 46 now)
I got 3 new pairs recently (black, red and brown)

I love them!

DS started wearing them about 4 years ago.

capricorn76 · 04/05/2011 18:17

Converse kind of went down when they bought by Nike a few years ago.

upahill · 04/05/2011 18:17

IPS I love my Vans as well!!
(not keen on the checkered ones though!)

Isthereanyoneoutthere · 04/05/2011 18:23

Think they look fab any age, my teenage daughters are usually a good measure for me.
What's your favourite colour?
Ebay are great for bargains although post is slow

impty · 04/05/2011 18:31

Espedrilles are more this season. Flat or wedge, Toms if you want the label version, most high street stores do though. :0

olibeansmummy · 04/05/2011 18:46

My ds ( 2 this month) has Etnies. Sooo many people have commented how cute they are and he looks like a proper little skater boy! They're definitely not for narrow feet though, ds is a 5h and still has plenty if room width wise. I have vans and DCs and don't really prefer any out of the 3 brands.

AMML · 04/05/2011 19:01

I got my first (and only) pair of white converse back in 1978 when I was 12. They cost £10 - a lot of money for my mum & dad to pay for a pair of trainers back them. They only lasted me a year or so (I played basketball though) and I then got Nike trainers that a family friend brought back from USA for me.

I noticed that new Converse shoes are only around £30 in the shops so they're far better value now than they were 33 years ago !!! Actually, I think I'll treat myself to a nice light blue pair - I always wanted that colour, but back in the 1970's you could only get white shoes, lol.

PowderMum · 04/05/2011 19:18

My DC won't let me wear a pair of converse as they say it would be far too embarrassing.
:(

Maybe I should buy a pair anyway or just borrow a pair of theirs
:)

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 04/05/2011 19:24

Don't care if Converse are passe; I love mine. It's low tops all the way for me ? did high tops the first time round!

nometime · 04/05/2011 22:19

Ds's love them - they've got the double tongue ones this summer. DS1 had black patent ones - he's worn for the last two winters but they are too small now.

What more can you ask for ? Sensible/fashionable/durable and the DC's like wearing them too. Win win win
