Are you all sure the legal age is 16?

Dd isn't a big liar but she claims Claires accessories do it at 13 with parental consent.

NinkyNonker · 04/05/2011 07:55

Wow, no! I had mine done at 18, had taken it out by 24 I think.

Champersonice · 04/05/2011 09:33

Mantic, when I said 18, I was referring to a body piercing studio, not some high street jeweller. Go to any reputable studio and they will not pierce under 18s. Like I said earlier, piercings are always best done with a needle and not a gun. Trust me, I did have twenty Shock ! But have grown up now and they are no longer...ahhh those were the days...

Bunnyjo · 04/05/2011 09:43

Wow, 12 is definitely too young IMO. My mum and dad told me I had to be 18 to have it done and, by then, I'd lost interest. There is no statutory age requirement for belly button piercing, but some local councils have used licensing powers to impose age restricted regulations. Found this link from the NHS

olderandwider · 04/05/2011 09:52

12 is way too young. My DD was into piercings at 15/16 (ears only) but we always said no to belly button and I even rang the local council to check the legal age at their licensed premises (I think it was 16 with parental consent).

Anyway, she was always too short of money to afford it! She is 20 now and says she wouldn't have it done now as she thinks it's tacky.

cumbria81 · 04/05/2011 09:55

My parents said no to my sister when we were kids and she got it done anyway, at 13. Then she forgot and waltzed into the kitchen in her little aerboics top, mid riff on display. I don't think my dad spoke to her for about a week.

Champersonice · 04/05/2011 09:55

If a piercing is done with a gun, it is more likely to trauma the area and cause infection. The studio where I used to get my piercings done hated guns and couldn't stress enough the importance of only having a piercing done by a needle. I know that won't always work especially when youngsters want their ears pierced etc. I just googled the theory and I found this page: timebombpiercing.com/index.php/gun-vs-needle/

and this one www.homiegfunk.com/gun.htm

Champersonice · 04/05/2011 09:59

Oh and btw, snake bite piercings are two piercings horizontal of each other; one on the right and one on the left. Its name is basically what it says. I think they are usually on the lower lip (of the mouth!).

HeidiKat · 04/05/2011 17:16

Tell her it really really hurts, I actually screamed in pain getting mine done and the only other time in my life I have done that is when having DD dragged out of me with forceps.

saffy85 · 04/05/2011 17:31

YANBU at all. FWIW I wanted my belly button pierced at this age too and my mum said no. In hindsight she was definatelt right not that I'd ever tell her this as it's supposedly very painful and surely impractical as you'd have to take the damn thing out for P.E and stuff, clean it everyday etc.

FutureNannyOgg · 04/05/2011 17:35

I don't know a good body piercer who would go anywhere near a minor (under 18).

I would say absolutely nothing but ear lobes before 18, and that is speaking as someone who knows their body modification.

FutureNannyOgg · 04/05/2011 17:39

Sorry, just skim read some more stuff. Body piercing with a gun? No absolutely not. The guns were made for ear lobes, nowhere else (the manufacturers state that to be the case), the damage that they can do when applied to other areas is terrible, and for naval piercing could be horrific (the backs embed into the flesh).

pickyourbrain · 04/05/2011 18:02

Shut.Up.

Oh god if this really is happening that year 7s are having their belly buttons pierced then my DSD will want it. And her mum will let her. Oh god.

Must start dropping in hints about it being tacky now to prempt the problem.

Of course YANBU.

pickyourbrain · 04/05/2011 18:05

I had mine done at 14 if it is of any significance. My parents didnt know Blush

ednurse · 04/05/2011 18:07

I had mine done in Y7 as did about 80% of the girls in my year.....that was quite a few years back now though and we were YOUNG looking back.

KatieScarlett2833 · 04/05/2011 18:07

Hell no. If DD has hers done she'd better have her own mortgage.

TallulahBetty · 04/05/2011 18:12

Does she have pierced ears? If not, could you compromise with that?

NarcolepsyQueen · 04/05/2011 18:16

I have taught in several schools, ranging from grammar to pru. I havent met ONE year 7 child who had their belly pierced (although i HAVE taught a Year 9 with genital piercings and a tatoo on her left breast)

lubberlich · 04/05/2011 18:19

Tell her yes- but only if you can get your labia pierced at the same time. That should put her off.

ivykaty44 · 04/05/2011 18:51

anyone got any cruesome photos of septic belly buttons?

OP posts:
FurKnickersAndNoCoat · 05/05/2011 10:33

i wasnt even allowed to get my ears pierced until i was 16! 12 is IMO way way WAY too young. i would have thought it was illegal (as with tattoos) but suprisingly it's not.

FurKnickersAndNoCoat · 05/05/2011 10:36

oh sorry, dont think i looked it up properly, didn't realise councils could impose restrictions.

icooksocks · 05/05/2011 10:44

Mine went bad both times I had it done.
Anyway my dd (although only 6) wouldnt be able to have it done when she's old enough because she has a flat belly button lucky me. Grin
