neighbours doing my head in - do I go round or chill out?

They have been partying since lunch time and playing music (through an amp) at full blast. I know it's a party, and don't want to be a pain in the arse, but my kids can't sleep because the music is so loud and it is driving me nuts. What time is it reasonable to go round and ask them to turn it down??

Oh god, I spoke too soon - it's Hey Ho Silver lining now... they are just getting started. I am going in.

Then you're a braver lady than me! Good luck Magaddict - hope they're considerate for you.

expatinscotland · 30/04/2011 22:45

We don't have environmental health here. Rural area.

rockinhippy · 30/04/2011 22:46

lol - I've just had to stop mid writing out my above post to answer to noise patrol here - they were surprisingly quick tonight - :)

Agree with posters saying call police & saying fights aggressive behaviour etc.....we had students a few years back organised some sort of a rave out the back .....Police confiscated their Amps & stuff Grin

HeadfirstForHalos · 30/04/2011 22:47

I think lying and saying they are arguing etc is out of order. It also sounds like the start of a neighbourly feud.

Plus if the noise is that bad in itself why lie and embellish the problem?

rockinhippy · 30/04/2011 22:50

the noise is outside in the Garden....that makes it different, not the same as it being indoors, so even 10 is too much, & from experience, I've learnt to nip it in the bud, before they think that loud garden parties are okay - I used to be a lot more tolerant, but learnt the hardway, that if you give an inch, they take a mile.....report it, Police are better, as generally quicker - but if you have noise patrol, the police can only cover aggressive behaviour & street noise....

Fimbo · 30/04/2011 22:53

God I had this last Saturday. Similar scenerio without the amps though. Started a thread on it on Tuesday. Was told that as it was Tuesday and it happened on Saturday to get over it!! Most people (with the exception of Expat) seem to think its acceptable.

I have already fallen out with one set of neighbours over noise and didn't say anything but if it happens again I will do.

You have my sympathy and I hope your dc get some sleep soon.

LadyWellian · 30/04/2011 22:56

Rockinhppy forgive me as I know this isn't your AIBU, but was the pub there when you moved in? We have a railway line at the bottom of our garden but it was there before we were, so when they get the screechy maintenance trucks out at 4am we just have to grimace and bear it.

LadyWellian · 30/04/2011 22:56

sorry, hippy

expatinscotland · 30/04/2011 22:57

'I think lying and saying they are arguing etc is out of order. It also sounds like the start of a neighbourly feud.

We don't have noise patrol here and I ring when they start raising their voices in addition to their drunk loud music because I don't want to listen to it any more.

I don't give a rat's arse what it takes to get them to stop.

No such thing as a neighbourly feud here because whoever occupies the flat downstairs is not a tenant. They act inconsiderate/anti-socially, the council no longer has an obligation to house them. If they have arrived at this point and still haven't twigged that no one wants to listen to their thumping music and parties, then it's not my problem.

expatinscotland · 30/04/2011 22:58

We don't have a garden. This is a flat.

nannynick · 30/04/2011 23:06

magaddict - Have a very similar issue here... can still hear music though it's a bit quieter than earlier. Don't live near me do you? (GU18)

They are now playing Jerusalem!

nannynick · 30/04/2011 23:08

It's now God Save The Queen - oh... wonder if that means it's the end soon!

Fimbo · 30/04/2011 23:08

Why are people these days so bloody inconsiderate. No way in this world would I have a party in my garden with music thumping out. But as my dh says, sadly nowadays people just don't give a f**k.

Fimbo · 30/04/2011 23:10

A friend of a friend has just built a huge and I do mean huge bar area and barbecue area in his back garden. It is in a street of bungalows full of retired people. They apparently throw inpromtu parties. My friend was so chuffed for her friend showing off this new area on FB with photos. All I could think of was those poor neighbours and how glad I am not in that street.

nannynick · 30/04/2011 23:12

I can't even work out where it's coming from... can't see anything from my flat window. It's gone 11pm... time they turned it down... they didn't end with God Save The Queen.

expatinscotland · 30/04/2011 23:14

Nail hitting hit, Fimbo.

crazynanna · 30/04/2011 23:16

rockinhippy the hose would have been ideal.....is all I had was an empty Evian hand bag size plastic bottle which I did launch at their front door, which promptly bounced off the wheelie bin and hit my neighbour's car,at which point I legged it.

rockinhippy · 30/04/2011 23:17

Ladywellen yes,

but it was a very quiet local pub with no live entertainment & quiet background music - bit of an old bodgers pub really & was for years - thoroughly checked out before buying -

they also had good soundproofing so on the occasions they did have rare weekend private parties, we heard nothing bar an odd bit of street noise - they were also really polite & warned us, & made sure their customers didn't bother us by using our front window as a pub smoking/mobile phone seatHmm

Then the Pub was sold off - bought by 2 Guys, who ripped out all the sound proofing & took no notice of any law as far as works done on party walls etcAngry...added more toilets, knocked down walls & sanded floors at 3a.m.Shock ....then turned it into a Gay pre club cabaret bar ....& its been hell from there onwards

Thankfully they went bust, & the brewery repossessed it, but even though Environmental Health forced them to put sound proofing back in, its never been the same, its still a Gay bar, now owned by a Lesbian couple, & though an improvement on the past owners, not every night now, but still having Kareoke nights & pre club warm up night with DJs & bands.......base still thumping through the wall as I type ....Complain & we are branded homophobicAngry couldn't be further from the truth......generally the whole system stinks around here as far as getting it sorted out goes too...

So YES, but it doesn't make it something we have to live with

expatinscotland · 30/04/2011 23:23

Oh, rockin! I'm so sorry! There's a lovely cottage in a village nearby that won't sell because it's next to a pub.

rockinhippy · 30/04/2011 23:26

rockinhippy the hose would have been ideal.....is all I had was an empty Evian hand bag size plastic bottle which I did launch at their front door, which promptly bounced off the wheelie bin and hit my neighbour's car,at which point I legged it

That made me laugh Grin -

I can definitely recommend a hose though, it was funny my hiding behind our wall with hose pointing up into the air over their garden, whilst they all ran around panicking about the rain & getting the music decks inside .....so drunk they didn't even realise.......glad to say the students we have now are fine though, odd bit of noise now & again on a weekend & the one party the had they let us know, & took it indoors when asked :)

LadyWellian · 30/04/2011 23:35

Oh dear yes, Rockinhippy I can see why you're annoyed - if they started running trains every 3 minutes around the clock I'd be a bit pissed off too. You can only go on the info you have at the time.

blackeyedsusan · 30/04/2011 23:40

do you have a sprinkler?

sees it has already been mentioned... but you can position then reteat to turn it on at the tap... Grin

BabyYoureAFirework · 01/05/2011 09:41

Good lord. I can't believe the amount of people here complaining - it's a PARTY, ffs. It's not all the time, it sounds like a one off. It's not even midnight - it wasn't even 10pm when the OP was written - do none of you remember what it's like to have some fun?

I have one party, once a year for my birthday - if my neighbours asked me to turn the music down at five to ten, I would be astounded. Chill out. It's one night!

Fimbo · 01/05/2011 20:00

No baby when it has been going for 10 hours already it is quite frankly taking the piss.
