to expect money off OR a new carpet?

ordered a carpet last week - the salesman said he would send someone around to my house to measure up as he didnt trust my measurements.

so i agreed. someone came out and measured up.

got it fitted today and its 3" too short into an alcove. fitter has patched it.

now the alcove its into is not seen but thats hardly the point. i asked the fitter what he thought the shop would do about it.
he said what do you mean?
i said i either want some money off or a new carpet that fits. its been professionally measured up and i paid for wall to wall carpet.

fitter reckons i will not get a discount.
i said fine - in that case he can simply replace the whole carpet. fitter then said it would make more sense to discount me, but doesnt think i will get this!

i have not paid yet. am going in to sort it out tomorrow.

is it unreasonable of me to expect them to either discount this carpet or provide me with a new one? what sort of discount should i be asking for?

i have 2 more carpets on order with them. obviously i wont have if this isnt sorted pronto.

As far as I know it's pretty standard to 'weld' on a bit of carpet to make it fit the room.

I don't think it'd be possible to fit out every shape and size of room with the standard sized rolls they have, so it's all jigsaw work.

The only way you'd get one to fit the exact size of your room was for someone to make it to order, pretty expensive I would have thought.

savoycabbage · 30/04/2011 02:16

That's right. If the room is wider than the roll of carpet then they join them.

ThatVikRinA22 · 30/04/2011 02:17

its a tiny room!

the carpet on the roll came in at 13 feet

my room is 10feet by 9 feet. so no welding required! it should have fit.

oh - and the fitter actually told me someone had made a mistake! he said its either come in short from the order or someone has cut it wrong.

Oh, well no then yanbu!

AgentZigzag · 30/04/2011 02:23

If he's any good at his job you shouldn't notice the join.

I'm only guessing, but I would say they just use whatever pieces they have to fit the rooms they've got to work on.

If they used a new bit of roll for every room I can't imagine they'd make enough money to keep a business going.

ThatVikRinA22 · 30/04/2011 02:41

you are joking right? i know the join is there. and i can see it.

i have had carpets fitted in this house before - not a single join. the rooms are not big, they are not awkward to fit, the biggest bedroom is 10 feet 10 by 9 feet 9.

the carpets come on 13 feet wide rolls - now im no maths wizard but my room is 9 feet 9 wide by 10 feet 10 long.

the length could be cut to any thing - its a big roll - so im sure the they could have managed to cut a length off that was 9feet 9,instead i have a 3 inch gap.
i could understand if my room was bigger than the roll, but its not.

if they do come out with the same as you agent zigzag, i will ask them to cancel my order for the other 2 carpets and take this carpet back up. i refuse to pay full price for a patchwork carpet when i know for an absolute fact (cos the fitter told me) that someone has simply bollocksed up and cut it too short off the roll. no way. i would rather them come and take it up again and ill take my hard earned cash to a carpet shop that takes the correct measurements.

YANBU.

Given the size of the room and the fact that that their employee measured up, you are entitled to expect that the carpet you chose is supplied and fitted with no joins.

If you are agreeable, it would make economic sense for the store to discount the carpet they have fitted as you are entitled to reject the goods and cancel your order or require them to honour the contract of sale by providing a carpet that fits properly.

Seems to me you've got the whip hand as you haven't yet paid, and you could decide to cancel your outstanding order(s) and shop elsewhere.

Sorry I can't provide the link, but google consumerdirect.gov.uk to see your consumer rights.

If I were you I'd require a very generous discount by way of appeasement, but if the join is in any way noticeable I'd want a replacement carpet.

AgentZigzag · 30/04/2011 02:56

Not 'coming out' with anything or joking OP, just answering the question I thought you were asking.

I didn't say my posts were factual but rather how I understand they work.

Now you weren't just asking for posters who agree with you to answer were you? Wink

kw1986 · 30/04/2011 10:04

YABU.

Why get so worked up about it being a tiny bit short in an alcove, even though its been patched and you've said yourself the bit in the lacove is not seen?

You paid for wall to wall carpet, you got wall to wall carpet!! Not like they have a join running down the middle of the room.

Bigger things in life than your carpet being a whopping 3" too short in an area you don't even see.

meaniemo · 30/04/2011 10:08

Def NBU that's appalling service. If there was any reason it would need joining because the room was large it should have been discussed before hand. I have a 5 metre wide room and there was going to be a join required as the carpet I liked only came in 4 metres - so I changed my mind and got a carpet that would fit without being joined. It's there fault. I wouldn't have let them lay it and insisted they take it back.

Incidentally I once measure my own room and got it wrong. The carpet was too small and a join was required. I called the store and they agreed to accept that carpet back minus a carriage fee of 30 pounds and got me the right size a few days later.

ChasingSquirrels · 30/04/2011 10:08

completely agree with you OP - I wouldn't be paying for a measured carpet that didn't fit. I wouldn't be accepting a discount either, they would need to replace and fit it properly as per the contract.

raedrenn · 30/04/2011 10:09

I would ask for a discount seeing as the patched bit can't be seen but it is their error. Replacement is a bit excessive if you can't even tell. Was it an expensive carpet?

Notsohotanymore · 30/04/2011 10:09

YANBU. I am also a bitch and whatever I buy i expect it to be perfect.Speak to the owner not the fitter,as its not his fault.

mycatoscar · 30/04/2011 10:17

YANBU , it should fit and they made a mistake. Especially as you have not paid yet and have other orders with them pending I would make a big fuss about this.

In the last 8 years me and dh have had 2 houses recarpeted and all the carpet shops I have ever been in they sold any odd sized or shaped peices as roll ends - these are much cheaper than buying off the roll because you take what there is. When we had small rooms to carpet we did go and look for oddments because it is cheaper but this is not what you ordered or paid for.

When you order a carpet to fit exactly off the main roll it should fit exactly and you pay quite a lot more for this.

ThisIsANiceCage · 30/04/2011 10:22

YANBU.

The error is with the carpet shop, so the fix has to be too.

And I don't get all this, "I'd insist because I'm a bitch." WTF?! Not carrying the can for someone else's expensive mistake makes you a bitch? Blimey.

LIZS · 30/04/2011 10:23

Are you sure it isn't the fitter who has cocked up ? By the sounds of it the 13' roll they sent should have fitted the room easily.

LovelyDaffs · 30/04/2011 10:28

i had to have an alcove patched because the room was larger then a standard roll, the chap who came to measure made it very clear that there'd be a join. You should complain.

bemybebe · 30/04/2011 10:28

You didn't get your wall-to-wall carpet you paid for. You should be getting a large discount as you are perfectly entitled to a replacement.

blackeyedsusan · 30/04/2011 10:35

if you didn't get what you paid for you should go back and complain. if they were going to have to do a join, they should have made that very clear when you ordered. there should be no need to patch in a room that size.

FabbyChic · 30/04/2011 10:42

I wouldn't ask for a discount I would ask for a carpet that fits.

iscream · 30/04/2011 10:57

That exact same thing happened to us! Because they sent someone around to measure, they had to take the responsibility for the mistake, and replace the entire carpet. He was not happy about it, and I worried we would have to take him to small claims court after the worker guy tried to insist we measured it. We had, but only when we were first looking for prices, they sent a guy in to measure once we choose the carpet. I recorded the phone call in case he refused to replace it, luckily he did take care of it right away.
Stick to your guns! Good luck!

iscream · 30/04/2011 11:00

Yes, I wouldn't settle for a discount, in time that seam will show and possibly separate.
