to expect money off OR a new carpet?

ordered a carpet last week - the salesman said he would send someone around to my house to measure up as he didnt trust my measurements.

so i agreed. someone came out and measured up.

got it fitted today and its 3" too short into an alcove. fitter has patched it.

now the alcove its into is not seen but thats hardly the point. i asked the fitter what he thought the shop would do about it.
he said what do you mean?
i said i either want some money off or a new carpet that fits. its been professionally measured up and i paid for wall to wall carpet.

fitter reckons i will not get a discount.
i said fine - in that case he can simply replace the whole carpet. fitter then said it would make more sense to discount me, but doesnt think i will get this!

i have not paid yet. am going in to sort it out tomorrow.

is it unreasonable of me to expect them to either discount this carpet or provide me with a new one? what sort of discount should i be asking for?

i have 2 more carpets on order with them. obviously i wont have if this isnt sorted pronto.

If I were you I'd ask for the discount first. If they get argumenetative or refuse, I'd tell them they can keep their carpet and go elsewhere. As others have said, you didn't ask for a patchwork carpet!

thank all, im going to go in today - was supposed to be paying for it today so ill see what they have to say first.

well ive phoned the shop and the owner isnt in until next week.

ive explained the problem and the sales assistant was reasonable enough so i'll see what the owner has to say next week.

the house is going on the market, and because of the position of patched piece, the hassle of emptying the entire room out again (bed will need to be dismantled again) i would be happy with a discount, (but am equally happy for them to replace the carpet and pay full price if they don't want to discount.)

carpet was not cheap but not the most expensive either due to house hopefully going on market, decent quality for a bedroom, cost £170.

if they do accept a discount as an option, what would you be asking for?
10%? less? more?

thoughts please....ta!

Our carpet fitters did this too, a two inch strip was missing because they hadn't measured it properly. Gave us 20 quid discount (which I thought was pretty poor, but there you go). Had no choice but to accept because I had a load of new furniture coming the next day and to re-order would have taken a couple of weeks.

The carpet should not have a join in it given the sizes of your room,go and give them merry hell its total incompetance and poor workmanship,I went with my daughter to Carpetright attracted by their 20% discount offer(I
know how thick was I)? my daughter had only just moved into her house
and we where still trying out colours for wallpapers and paint etc so she
was unsure of carpet colours until the painting had been done,we asked for a fitter to measure for hall stairs landing and 4 beds and until she had paid
a deposit and picked what she wanted they refused to come out to measure
where has all the customer care gone in this country,so get back to the
suppliers and either get massive discount or wall to wall fitting, and yes we
did go to another carpet store and they came out next day and measured up
for free and didnt charge the stupid price for fitting so my daughter saved
a hell of a lot more than 20%

If it was a 12 foot wide carpet and the width into the alcove was for instance 12 foot 3 inches was there anything else they could have done?

I just started a new job in a restaurant today, hoovered the carpet this morning and spent several minutes wondering why the threads on the floor in the middle of the room wouldn't pick up. Oh silly me, they were where the carpet join was coming unravelled!

ThatVikRinA22 · 30/04/2011 14:10

Mandy2003 the carpet was 13 feet wide so yes, they could have done something - measured the length correctly for a start.

it should have fit. it didnt because someone has screwed up.

I don't know what the mark-up is on carpets, but if I absolutely had to live with a botched job that cost £170 I'd be looking for at least £70 off.

As it seems unlikely that you'll have live with it, maybe you'd settle for £50?

However, if you can see the join it's probable that others will spot it too - when you're showing the house to prospective buyers can you stand in the alcove while pointing out the desirable features of the room or strategically place a chair/shelf unit to distract the eye from the fault?

If not, resign yourself to the hassle of bed dismantling etc and get the store to replace the carpet and do the job properly.
