... to be annoyed at the media calling Kate Middleton a 'commoner'

First time poster in AIBU so be gentle with me!

Now I am loving the pomp and circumstance of the royal wedding, I think it's lovely to join in with wedding celebrations anyway, let alone one that the whole world is watching too.

I'm also very pleased that Wills has found his girl and that we have some hope of a fresh approach to the monarchy (that's if Queenie doesn't rule too much longer and Charlie doesn't take his time either).

BUT.

The main theme of all the media coverage is related to Kate Middleton's 'Normal' background. Can I point out that she is NOT your average commoner. She grew up in a posh house, posh village, went to private schools her entire life, and upon graduating from uni, did not get a job yet still managed to wear all the top fashion labels and mix in the right circles (obviously funded by her family).

So please STOP calling her 'common'. Does she know what its like to live of £20 a week? No. Has she worked three jobs just to pay the bills? No. Sorry, but it's bugging me.

Commoner is just the term for a non-Royal/Aristoscrat/titled person, is it not? It's not quite the same as calling her common. The House of Commons isn't full of the common people, just non-Lords.

YANBU to be annoyed at the outdated terminology though.

MarshaBrady · 29/04/2011 09:49

I'm amazed the objection from many is that she is too wealthy to be a commoner and not that the word exists still at all.

'Commoner' v 'blue blood' is ridiculous these days.

ARoyalHardhat · 29/04/2011 09:52

YABU she is a commoner, it's the appropriate terminology to use in this instance.

Shes not common in the sense of coming from a 2 up 2 down in the middle of a busy town, but she's a commoner in terms of not being of royal blood.

This thread discusses this too.

Being a commoner isn't the same as being common.

FreudianSlipper · 29/04/2011 10:03

just shoes up how ridiculous the whole set up is

diana wasn't a commoner, fergie was/is

ChairOfTheBored · 29/04/2011 10:08

She is as common as I am posh I guess.

CatandDyl · 29/04/2011 10:10

YABU, as technically everyone bar the royal family are classed as commoners, but YANBU to be offended by it

GwendolineMaryLacey · 29/04/2011 10:10

The OP isn't getting annoyed at the outdated terminology, she's getting her knickers in a knot because she thinks that commoner is the same as common.

And she's nothing special, her family happen to have a bit of money, lots of people do, you know.

darleneconnor · 29/04/2011 10:11

you are confusing common with commoner

her mother was certainly 'common'

Wamster · 29/04/2011 10:15

YABU. Being a 'commoner' isn't the same as being common. It just means not royal etc as others have said here. If you accept that we have royalty, you have to accept that those NOT royal are known as commoners.

One of the richest men in the world is a commoner (Bill Gates).

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 29/04/2011 10:17

But she is a 'commoner'

She has no royal blood. That's what commoner means. Not Royal.

Wamster · 29/04/2011 10:17

So, she is a 'commoner' but, certainly not ordinary.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 29/04/2011 10:18

You know you want to Hecate, I bet you're secretly waving a little Union flag Wink

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 29/04/2011 10:23

Shock How very dare you!

I'll grab a flag and shove it where the sun don't shine Wink

I am reduced to watching a programme on NHK world about bloody FISH cos every pigging channel is on about the damn royal wedding.

Fish. I ask you.
