To forget I have a baby for five (ten max) minutes in Sainsbury's

Oscalito · 28/04/2011 15:14

I was racing around Sainsbury's with my buggy, got to checkout, unloaded basket, raced off and got a few more things to reach £30 so I could use a money-off voucher they'd sent me, when I looked down and realised I'd somehow misplaced my buggy.

Sprinted around shop fearing the worst and was confronted in fruit and veg by a woman employee who told me very loudly they were just about to call social services and the police (and still might) and 'I should be very ?'

... at which point I interrupted and said 'I haven't slept in five months'. Slight exaggeration but definitely didn't get much sleep last night and DH has been around so have gotten used to having someone else looking out for baby over the last few days.

She said 'Don't speak to me like that madame' and I said 'I already feel bad enough' and left (this time with baby, obviously). A small crowd had gathered at this point. It could have turned quite nasty - she was ferocious - but I got out of there ASAP.

Was this a bit of an overreaction on her part? Or am I just too blase? I was panicking and fearing the worst as I ran around the shop, but when I saw the baby was OK I was just relieved. I am usually really careful, just slipped up once (won't do it again). Surely I'm not the first....?

theinet let's put it this way - drag DCs round supermarket or DCs aren't fed - which of those is more "inappropriate"

TragicallyRoyallyHip · 28/04/2011 16:13

How is taking a baby to a supermarket inappropriate? Confused

Christ you obviously must be the best mother in the world Hmm

Longtalljosie · 28/04/2011 16:13

theinet has no children, obviously.

"these women, think they can have it all, give birth and get to leave the house Grin..."

squeakytoy · 28/04/2011 16:13

theinet, has there been a spate of children being abandoned by the onions and spuds recently then?

CinnabarRed · 28/04/2011 16:13

Do you have children, theinet? Just out of interest....

Nixea · 28/04/2011 16:14

Ahhh come on now people. Let's leave theinet alone...after all, we all need someone flawless, perfect and infallible to aspire to right? [chmm]

Whelk · 28/04/2011 16:15

theinet is clearly a male childless troll. Yawn

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 28/04/2011 16:15

I would say no children for theinet............i remember how easy it was to parent before I actually was one!!

theinet · 28/04/2011 16:17

the mother should be staying at home and sending someone else out to shop when baby is small - quite simple. Or if she wants to go out, leaving the baby with a trusted relative, partner or help.

TragicallyRoyallyHip · 28/04/2011 16:18

Oh yes we all have people to send out to do our shopping for us. Idiot [chmm]

DooinMeCleanin · 28/04/2011 16:19

'the mother should be staying at home and sending someone else out to shop when baby is small - quite simple. Or if she wants to go out, leaving the baby with a trusted relative, partner or help.'

Ahahaha. Grin

icooksocks · 28/04/2011 16:19

Your perception of reality is so skewed theinit that you actually made me laugh.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 28/04/2011 16:20

the mother should be staying at home and sending someone else out to shop

Fucking hell - what a cock!!

SybilBeddows · 28/04/2011 16:21

I personally think that people who feel able to tell mothers they shouldn't be going out to do the shopping, have a moral responsibility to put their money where their mouth is and devote 16 hours a week to doing new mums' shopping for them.
Who's with me?

(btw, if the person in question has never actually been a child themselves then they are exempted.)

theinet since when is going food shopping "wanting it all"...???? WTF?

Obviously. Wanting ALL the food.

TandB · 28/04/2011 16:21

theinet Thu 28-Apr-11 16:04:20
i just can't see why there is any need to drag babies and children around supermarkets and into other inappropriate environments.

What? Like brothels?

Whelk · 28/04/2011 16:22

theinet - you've had your bank holiday fun now. Very good.

TandB · 28/04/2011 16:23

OP - I was left in my carrycot in the supermarket once.

It was a little local supermarket and the staff knew her so they just cooed over the baby till she came pelting back.

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 28/04/2011 16:23

Grin - kungfupannda

theinet - can I recommend the Feminist section? That should be right up your street. You know women who not only want it all - but want [whispers] equality too!

TandB · 28/04/2011 16:24

Ooh. If Theinet is going to the Feminist section I am going to watch. Who is coming?

misdee · 28/04/2011 16:24

is anyone else thinking 'i wiash i could forget i had a baby for 5-10mins' unfortuatly with 5 lovely but loud kids its not something i can foget [cgrin]

Oscalito · 28/04/2011 16:24

actually I quite like the idea of myself swanning around Sainbury's having it all.

Mumofaflump · 28/04/2011 16:25

theinet

What the actual fuck are you on?

I think the person you are is summed up by the fact that you just suggested that a new mum leave her child with the help!!

ladymystikal · 28/04/2011 16:25

theinet the mother should be staying at home and sending someone else out to shop when baby is small -

WTF!!! either this woman is so far up her own arse, is a troll, is a man trying to cause trouble or just an idiot.
What if women do not have the 'support'around them? what if their partner ran off and they are now single parents? who are they going to leave their kids with then?? and trips to supermarkets can be good with babies/toddlers, you can teach them about names of food, interacting with strangers etc.

TandB · 28/04/2011 16:25

We should have a MN trip to Sainsburys, abandon all the DCs in a boring aisle, like the stationery section, and run around grabbing things and yelling "All of it! I want all of it!"
