Listened to some being interviewed on the radio this morn...a lady was complaining about the lack of sleep - what with Big Ben going off every quarter of an hour....

Pretty cold in London too.

Suchffun · 28/04/2011 09:42

I think they're ace. I want to be like them when I am older tbh, there is a lot to be said for eccentricity [csmile]

LittleOneMum · 28/04/2011 09:48

Mad as a box of frogs.

LtEveDallas · 28/04/2011 10:00

What harm are they doing? Not a very nice thread is it?

"...grown up people camping outside in tents, very unhygenic & totally daft..."

Couldn't that be said about all camping? Would you call someone who enjoyed that a nutter? Each to their own, and unless it impinges on you in some way (not that I could see how) then what business is it of yours how other people choose to spend their time.

nepenthe3 · 28/04/2011 10:06

It's not like normal camping though is it! They are camping on pavements, not in the glorious countryside. I agree it is all pretty benign, and if it makes them happy then fine, let them get on with it. But it's still odd.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 28/04/2011 10:09

I think I am about to be kicked off MN for confessing this but Blush when I was 21` I spent the night in the Mall for prince ANdrew and Sarah Ferguson's wedding.
WRT the loo question first, there were loos in the park which were open as I recall, and some portalloos.
I didn';t have a tent, just a warm jacket and a backpack full of wine snacks. As to why, well I thought it would be a good party and (as I was just back from Uni and living with parents again and feeling hemmed in) it was a chance to stay up all night smoking fags. I thought it would be fun.
In fact I remember being chilly and a bit bored a lot of the time. While there were a few people around to chat to, most were ROyalist saddos who wanted to go to sleep from about 10pm, or in groups not that interested in strangers (I went by myself).

Shock Shock Shock

SGB! Shock

Grin
LoopyLoopsNincompoop · 28/04/2011 10:17

Oh my word, I've nominated this thread to go in classics just so SGB's confession can be immortalised for everyone to see...

Chil1234 · 28/04/2011 10:21

People camp out all night for all kinds of strange reasons.... Harrods Sale, new Ipad on sale, new Harry Potter book, concert tickets. Why not to be in the front row for the best parade in town? "I was there" is as good a reason as any for doing something a bit daft.

forehead · 28/04/2011 10:22

Saddos

Chil1234 · 28/04/2011 10:24

@forehead... I think the real 'saddos' at the moment are the sour grapes, miserable types determined to go out of their way to avoid the whole thing in an effort to seem cool and detached.

donnie · 28/04/2011 10:25

I camped out all night last May so I could be first in the country to vote for Dave 'I'm no Bullingdon bastard' Cameron.

So ner.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/04/2011 10:28

I think it would be quite cool, not the royal wedding bit, but when else could you camp next to big ben and not be moved off or hassled by the police?

MotherMucca · 28/04/2011 10:53

Oddjobbers.

But it doesn't make them bad people... All I can do when I see them on the news is wonder how they wee. Are the WillKat cups brimming over?

Icelollycraving · 28/04/2011 11:03

Oh the sour grapes sound like dh. I like it. I think it's great,I like a British eccentric, like the ones at the front of the Proms. Different strokes & all that....

oohlaalaa · 28/04/2011 11:03

I think its harmless fun.

Sidge · 28/04/2011 11:28

I think anyone that camps anywhere is slightly peculiar to be honest - why choose a tent and sleeping bag over a nice comfy bed?

But camping on pavements for a big event is understandable really. I wouldn't do it but hey, work away. No harm.

Apparently there was some bloke on the news yesterday camping out and wearing a self-designed T-shirt that said "Diana would have been proud". Now that is just bonkers [cgrin]

megapixels · 28/04/2011 11:32

Weren't they mostly tourists?

No harm in it really. I wouldn't do it for a million bucks (well, maybe I might for that amount if it's just one night), but they're not hurting anyone.

onagar · 28/04/2011 11:36

Harmless enough. The actual reasons seem to vary a bit. 'Being there at an historic occasion' isn't too bad. Though I don't see it as significant myself.

Some seem to want to be near Royalty which I find a bit weird. The whole "ohhhh priince whatsit nearly looked at me! I feel so honoured" thing.

I know why royalty like the idea of looking down at people, but why on earth would anyone feel pleasure at looking up?

TotemPole · 28/04/2011 11:37

Camping overnight for a 1 minute glimpse, I don't understand it.

Fimbo · 28/04/2011 11:41

I am so shocked at you SGB. [cshock]. In fact I am not even going to 'speak' anymore. I was dumped bloody dumped I will have you know for a Sarah Ferguson look a like. I was gutted for weeks actually I don't think I have ever quite gotten over it. Our friendship is finished.
[cgrin]

Bumperlicioso · 28/04/2011 11:43

It's not even over night but two nights for some!

MollieO · 28/04/2011 11:49

I do wonder at some people (SGB in particular Grin)! I went up the day after Andrew and Sarah's wedding to look at the flowers in Westminster Abbey. They were so beautiful. I'm debating doing the same with Ds this weekend.

TotemPole · 28/04/2011 11:52

Ooh, mollie that's a nice idea for the weekend.

HerRoyalHighnessPrincessCervix · 28/04/2011 11:56

SGB [cshock]

I am somewhat tempted to pop off and camp out but am too afraid of the ridicule of my friends and family. i'm fairly normal really but think it would be rather fun.
