There seems to be alot of bad comments and remarks about fruitshoots, am I missing something?

officially - they are full of sugar and stuff
unofficially - mners have latched onto them as a symbol of bad parenting and all that must be sneered at

TanteRose · 27/04/2011 12:31

they are the devil's own drink...be warned!

not really, its just a bit of an in-joke on MN.

I have bought my DCs a fruitshoot each when we visited the UK - you gotta sample the culture, innit? Grin

knittedbreast · 27/04/2011 12:34

nothing if you get them once in a while when you are out, you`d get daggers for anyhting more frquent. if your child happens to drink one while eating a greggs pasty, mn will call ss. you have been warned :D

PutAnotherShrimpOnTheBarbie · 27/04/2011 12:36

I was about to ask if it as the same thing as getting a sausage roll from Greggs!

Damn, I'm going to have to thing of something else for lunch!

DS has had 2 ever, usually only water, but what's the fuss? And what exactly is an ss?!

rosie1979 · 27/04/2011 12:37

They contain an artificial sweetner called aspartame which has been linked to all kinds of horrible stuff such as MS, cancer ect. The same sweetner is in Diet Coke. I am far from precious but would never, never give my dc's fruit shoots.

LaWeasel · 27/04/2011 12:42

Because they contain a carcinogen (cancer linked ingredient)... this is the full list of stuff to avoid It's MASSIVE and completally impossible. And still doesn't guarantee you won't get cancer anyway.

bringmesunshine2009 · 27/04/2011 12:42

I quite like Diet Coke. And am preggo. crappy mum

LaWeasel · 27/04/2011 12:46

I seriously wouldn't worry about it bringmesunshine.

There's also carcinogen's in processed hams and blackened bacon and a host of other stuff... it's about the quantities you consume not about whether you have ever been near them ever.

knittedbreast · 27/04/2011 12:46

SS means social services.

maypole1 · 27/04/2011 12:48

lots why would you buy a fruit shoot when waTER IS SOLD IN THE SAME FRIDGE

AND THE FACT PEOPLE DONT KNOW WHATS WRONG WOTH A DRINK FULL OF COLOURINGS AND SUGER IS WHATS WRONG

hairylights · 27/04/2011 12:48

I think the issue is that they are marketed with 'fruit' in the title, which will make parents assume they are 'healthy' when actually they are full of sugar.

bringmesunshine2009 · 27/04/2011 12:49

HA HA well am expecting visit from SS after this morning's mis-managed extreme tantrum. Er, we don't eat pork products so maybe carcenogenic offset!

howitis · 27/04/2011 12:50

I have no problem with fruitshoots and if DD wanted one then I would let her have one, that said has anyone actually tasted one they are awful.

vic77en · 27/04/2011 12:51

We're just back from a holiday with the in-laws who have 2 dc's aged 9 and 11 and drink a fruitshoot with a packed lunch. DS (2) spent all week wanting to do things his cousins were doing and latched onto the fruitshoot thing, so we refilled the empties with water for him as he refused to drink out of a regular cup or his normal sippy cups.

Now we're back home and he still wants the fruitshoot bottles - I am normally wearing my judgypants when I see toddlers drinking these, so would IBU to remove the labels and let him have them? Or would other judgypants still recognise the lovely purple colour and judge me? [cgrin]

hairylights · 27/04/2011 12:51

(my step daughter thought that the 'good for you' range in Asda was actually good for you so I had to do a full explanation about marketing, and that they are 'not as bad for you' but that Asda would never ever have a range that was titled 'not quite as bad as the fuller fat/fuller sugar brand, but stil pretty bad as a food group')

TheRepublican · 27/04/2011 12:51

Its a MN thing ..nothing wrong with them in moderation ,same as all food really

No need to shout maypole

Pagwatch · 27/04/2011 12:52

Read the ingredients list.
If you are then happy to drink them then fine.
But I object to them because they contain huge quantities of shit but are marketed with fruit in the title to try and make people think they are a healthy choice for a child.
But other people feed their children ,ads of stuff I wouldn't. And vice versa.

I think it is the fact that they are aimed at kids and are really shit that is the issue for some of us

SmethwickBelle · 27/04/2011 12:52

My son likes them, I don't see the problem with them. He also enjoys choc, ice cream and cakes, what is the point of being a child if you can't eat sugary crap once in a while?

expatinscotland · 27/04/2011 12:53

Full of aspartame and artificial sweetners. Makes dyspraxic DD1's muscle spasms even worse. Tastes rank.

expatinscotland · 27/04/2011 12:54

It's not full of sugar, though. It's full of . . . crap.

PutAnotherShrimpOnTheBarbie · 27/04/2011 12:55

I knew they were full of sugar and sweeteners, I just wondered if there was something else I was missing. Never buy anything like that for my charges but must admit I lived off them last summer as they contained only 15 calories! Didnt really think about the rest of it!

OP posts:
LaWeasel · 27/04/2011 12:56

They do taste vile, and have practically nothing positive in them and I don't know why you would offer them regularly... but then I don't know why you would offer anything but water regularly though, as it seems a complete waste of money to buy drinks when tap water is so ridiculously cheap.

But apart from that they really aren't the devils drink (for most kids).

Pagwatch · 27/04/2011 12:57

My children can have sugar. They have chocolate and sweets.

But not fruit shoots with aspartame and other awful shit

LaWeasel · 27/04/2011 12:57

erm, water has a lot less than 15 calories!
