to not understand what is wrong with fruitshoots?

There seems to be alot of bad comments and remarks about fruitshoots, am I missing something?

OP posts:
Pagwatch · 27/04/2011 14:24

Aspartme makes my son bite his own arms. Not a myth.

I don't care if other people have fruit shoots. None of my business.
I was just explaining why I don't like them. Which was what the op asked

LaWeasel · 27/04/2011 14:24

I wondered why it wasn't on the list of carconigens!

Excellent. Another thing to justifiable not give a stuff about.

Insomnia11 · 27/04/2011 14:26

They don't taste very good to me but I ate and drank all manner of shit as a kid, my kids probably eat a lot healthier. Mostly they drink water or watered down juice. I used to drink Coke and Kia-ora. I don't begrudge them the odd Fruit Shoot when we're out, but if we can we get the fruit juice and water ones with no added sugar or sweetener.

microfight · 27/04/2011 14:27

What does anyone thing of the R Robinsons no added sugar range?

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 27/04/2011 14:32

Becasue they're a chemical cocktail not a drink?!

If they're given one at a party or something the world wont end, but I don't buy them - there are plenty of other things that are better for them (water mostly!).

KittyChat · 27/04/2011 14:35

Aspartme makes my son bite his own arms. Not a myth.

Is this a common side effect?! I also heard the aspartame is up there with MMR causing autism and humankind using only 10% of their brains...

vmcd28 · 27/04/2011 14:37

Pagwitch, serious question - how do you know it's aspartame that makes your ds bite himsel?

Pagwatch · 27/04/2011 14:38

No. Not common. But ds2 does have autism and massive behavioural and allergic reactions to foods.
Aspartme is probably the worst. And flouride funnily enough.

Fwiw it is a fucking pain in the arse. I would very much like to be able to feed him anything.

KittyChat · 27/04/2011 14:40

Bloody hell Pagwatch, that sounds awful - is there fluoride in the water where you live?

Pagwatch · 27/04/2011 14:41

It was a long process of exclusion. Not so difficult with him as with other children as he eats so very very few foods.

Pagwatch · 27/04/2011 14:44

Yes and it is noticeable when we are elsewhere that he is calmer. But the levels are not as intense as in toothpaste not least as he seems to swallow a lot of toothpaste when he brushes.

Pagwatch · 27/04/2011 14:46

I am very conscious that I sound completely barking btw Grin

Pisser really.

Asinine · 27/04/2011 14:50

Pagwatch
I used to think people with multiple allergies were barking

Now I have mulitple allergies and people think I'm barking

midori1999 · 27/04/2011 14:54

I only let my DC drink milk or water on a daily basis, but they are allowed the odd fruit shoot, just like they are sometimes allowed sweets, crisps, icecream, biscuits, cakes etc. They would choose fresh juice over a fruit shoot though. I just don't see the odd one is going to do any harm.

sims2fan · 27/04/2011 15:00

I only heard this second hand but a friend of mine went on a school trip with a class of children to a dentist who said that the worst thing you can give to a child for their teeth is a fruit shoot. Worse than coke etc. I didn't hear that myself but presumably a dentist would know that type of thing.

TheRepublican · 27/04/2011 15:05

Fruit juice is not particularly good for teeth either

megapixels · 27/04/2011 15:05

Because it contains nasties.

When I first came to the UK I had no idea what fruit-shoots were, I thought they were bottles of fruit juice and dh used to try to force persuade DD1 to drink them Hmm. Now I know to read labels on everything, nothing is assumed from the name alone.

I haven't read the whole thread but someone said that it's like eating chocolate. Not at all, there is nothing bad about chocolate at all. It is only the quantities that you eat it in that makes it unhealthy.

The DC have never had fruitshoots, they have never wanted to try and I am very happy for that to continue.

MistyValley · 27/04/2011 15:26

We never buy squash either - again, these days it's full of artificial sweeteners and crap, and tastes like it.

And it's more expensive than fruit juice - a litre of value apple juice is about 56p (I dilute in the same way as squash for the DC), and a litre of Ribena is about £2.80. Tesco 'super-healthy' 40% (whoopy do) fruit juice squash is about £1.25. Even the cheapiest Tesco squash is £1 a litre.

MistyValley · 27/04/2011 15:28

oh no, stand corrected, the CHEAPIEST value squash is 39p a litre. Lord knows what's in that though.

Pagwatch · 27/04/2011 15:31

Oh asinine you poor thing.
At least ds2 doesn't want to eat much.

Sidge · 27/04/2011 16:39

My only problem with Fruit Shoots is that they taste rank and are hideously expensive.

Mine have water or sugar free squash. DD2 is on a calorie controlled diet and so can't have the regular stuff, diluted juice, milk etc. She won't drink plain water either (probably because she gets no sensory feedback from it).

MistyValley · 27/04/2011 17:15

Oh yes and another hideousness about them is the rubbish they generate. You see them littering the pavements everywhere.

It's also ridiculous that they come in expensive sports bottle style things that only get one use (usually) before being chucked away. V wasteful.

PunkPixie · 27/04/2011 21:35

For me, it's nothing to do with the lack of nutritional value in them. I'm not above giving my kids the odd bad-for-you treat (Yes, I DO Mean McD's).

It's just that they're rotten, cheap-tasting bottles of mildly flavoured sugar water. Yeuch!

LoveLeonardCohen · 27/04/2011 22:37

LaWeasal -Now I'm scared after a glance at the carcinogenic ingredients

I just wouldn't give my DCs fruist shoots - why? If they don't know what it is and don't ask for it, why would I give it to them. Just horrible stuff - yuk

CaurnieBred · 27/04/2011 23:17

Only buy from their "My-5" range as that is pure fruit juice with a bit of water; no other added nasties.
