To give my dc wet grapes

Yes it's a grape thread, but not as we know it.

Met up with a friend today and I rinsed my dc some grapes, then cut them, (of course Grin) then put them in a bowl and added yoghurt. My friend said, "I can't believe you give your children wet grapes!" She was laughing but also meant it, ifyswim. I said, "What?" and she explained that I should pat them dry.

I don't get it. They're wet inside anyway and water is fine from the tap, no? I know this friend gives her dc squash with tap water, so what is the problem?

Our dc started killing each other calling for us at this point so we forgot about it. I will ask her what she meant when I next see her, but in the meantime, I really need to know:

AIBU for giving my dc wet grapes?

Your friend is very rude to comment on your wet grapes. My friend served grapes the other day that her DH had put in a bowl. It was only when we reached the bottom that we found a dead cockroach. Did I comment on her cockroachy grapes? No I didn't.

I think fruit and veg tastes best straight off the tree/out of the ground so would never worry about "dirt, germs and poo/pee from insects". IMO a carrot is best when pulled from the dirt and wiped on your shirt. Imagine all that worm poo! Oh NO!!
Can't believe how removed from reality so many people have become about germs!
YANBU. Your friend is absurd.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 26/04/2011 01:08

The dirt doesn't bother me, the pesticides etc do.

Cutiecat · 26/04/2011 01:10

I wash all my fruit and veg before eating and i really have no idea why other than rinsing off chemicals, I just thought you 'should'. I am alarmed at the thought it does not wash off pesticide. Off to investigate on google.

Despite my washing them all i always dry mushrooms and usually put kitchen towel in the bowl before putting berries and things in. Oh i have also realised i polish apple after rinsing and hand dc the paper towel with the apple. I think i am OCD about this and i never knew it. Happy to report bananas are just peeling and consumed.

And my dd sucks her thumb and so probably eats 1,000,000 germs a day.

My MIL individually washes and dries each grape.

I know this because when DH was in hospital a few years back they bought him some grapes and I was offered one. My FIL was instructed by my MIL to take the individual grape away and wash and dry it. Unfortunately he could only find a washbasin (ie bathroom tap) to wash it under - which clearly wouldn't do - so the grape was rinsed in some bottled water, then patted dry with a piece of kitchen towel, then handed to me.

I was offered a second grape some minutes later, but declined on the basis that the first had filled me up and I couldn't manage a second Grin.

Oh and she soaks all ground veg such as carrots and potatoes in Milton for 30 minutes too before boiling them to feeding-tube consistency.

MoreBeta · 26/04/2011 09:41

DS1 will not eat wet grapes. Simple as that. Really he won't. He has to have them dried. He is 11 and going to secondary school in September.

DW said last night that she hoped both he (and his brother) would stay away from girls until into their 20's.

I just wonder if any girl would be willing to wash and dry grapes for him.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 26/04/2011 09:59

She's a lunatic. I can't wait to hear her explanation though ? do report back, OP!

KatieMiddleton · 26/04/2011 10:07

Could he not wash and dry his own grapes MoreBeta?

EmmaBemma · 26/04/2011 10:33

I do rinse grapes and other fruit and veg but I also wonder how effective it is, given that for most things, water hotter than 70C and some sort of detergent is necessary to remove dirt and nasties.

As for the OP, wet grapes wouldn't bother me in the slightest!

duchesse · 26/04/2011 19:06

MoreBeta's DS is definitely old enough to prepare his own grapes especially if he's going to be fussy about them. At that age my DD2 had been making her own packed lunches for over a year- with supervision re contents but unaided. Can't imagine why a NT 10 yo could not wash their own fruit.

CareyFakes · 26/04/2011 19:16

I don't think I've ever washed fruit or veg Confused. I've just put some new potatoes on the steamer, unwashed Shock.

I've also never cut grapes for DD, we live on the edge. I sometimes don't wash my hands after having a piss too Grin

It's all rock 'n' roll here

smokinaces · 26/04/2011 20:12

I dont wash any fruit or veg. Only the odd very dirty potato.

The DSs have only ever had 1 sickness bug each in their 3 and 4 years of life. I like to think that they swallow so many germs on their food that others dont touch them Grin

Zingylemontart · 26/04/2011 22:56

Has your friend been reading this: www.dhmo.org/

whathow · 26/04/2011 23:04

chippinginloveseastereggs got there first with the explanation. Mine are lucky if they get washed and even luckier if they get dried as well Grin

MistyValley · 26/04/2011 23:08

I think wetness actually enhances the appearance of the grapes, in a dewy food ad kind of a way. Your children should be extra grateful for the aesthetics.

And yes actually - re the cursory rinse, it does bugger all apart from make the grapes wet, I don't know why I bother.

I don't think even Milton would be a great zapper of pesticides.

GloriaSmut · 27/04/2011 00:54

I prefer to irradiate them. That way there's no chance of catching Weill's Disease from the lakes of insect piddle that they are drenched in.
