To give my dc wet grapes

Yes it's a grape thread, but not as we know it.

Met up with a friend today and I rinsed my dc some grapes, then cut them, (of course Grin) then put them in a bowl and added yoghurt. My friend said, "I can't believe you give your children wet grapes!" She was laughing but also meant it, ifyswim. I said, "What?" and she explained that I should pat them dry.

I don't get it. They're wet inside anyway and water is fine from the tap, no? I know this friend gives her dc squash with tap water, so what is the problem?

Our dc started killing each other calling for us at this point so we forgot about it. I will ask her what she meant when I next see her, but in the meantime, I really need to know:

AIBU for giving my dc wet grapes?

Yes they get wet grapes. In fact youngest ds loves drinking the water at the bottom of the bowl!

Zingylemontart · 25/04/2011 21:55

I'm surprised she hasn't contacted ss yet....

Wink

My kids would wonder what was wrong if their grapes weren't wet.

MsToni · 25/04/2011 22:00

I wash grapes before eating them / giving my 22 mo. Sometimes though, especially in supermarkets, when he sees them and wants it immediately, he eats them unwashed and I feel slightly bad....but it hasnt killed him...so it can't be that bad.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 25/04/2011 22:02

Could it be because wet grapes have that...erm...choking risk cos the surface has greater friction in the windpipe compared to dry grapes...I think...

However, beause you cut them that is not an issue.

winnybella · 25/04/2011 22:05

I wash all fruit due to the pesticides/fertilizers residue, but what about rasberries? They just fall apart even when rinsed really quickly.

NettoSuperstar · 25/04/2011 22:05

I never wash fruit, and I never cut grapes either.
I only found out you should when DD was about 7, so a bit late.

Probably grubbers touch our fruit and veg, after all I do shop at Asda, but so long as I didn't see it, it didn't happenGrin

PaganOfBologna · 25/04/2011 22:08

Oooh MsToni don't tell me that you feed your child grapes in the supermarket before paying for them - because THAT is a whole other level of MN crime

EgguStudent · 25/04/2011 22:08

I've always dried my grapes, but just assumed that was me being a bit of a loon. Because I generally am.

Seems I have a kindred spirit Grin

Ishani · 25/04/2011 22:15

I think it's the water and yoghurt combination, I completely understand her aversion to, it dilutes the yoghurt yuk

MsToni · 25/04/2011 22:17

POB....:) I do :) It's either that or he screams down the entire place. AND I always pay for it even if it's the wrapper :)

(Sorry for thread hijack)

duchesse · 25/04/2011 22:32

Your friend's a lunatic.

Second time I've answered that on a MN thread in as many minutes. :)

Don't you peel them too? Poor, poor children having wet unpeeled grapes.

Ryoko · 25/04/2011 23:04

To those who don't wash grapes.

How can you not wash fruit and veg before you eat it? 70 odd percent of the pesticide is on the outside, let alone dirt, germs and poo/pee from insects.

raffle · 25/04/2011 23:05

I always hang my grapes out on the line for at least 20 mins before presenting them to anyone, wet grapes are inexcusable Grin

sickoftheholidays · 25/04/2011 23:10

I dont cut grapes for my kids, and they get only a cursory rinse under the tap. When I look at my two kids coming in from outside like the scruffy mucky little pups that they are, a little bit of insect poo/muck is really the least of my worries when they have spent all day wallowing playing in the garden.
BTW, I may be wrong but I dont think pesticide is water soluble is it? otherwise it would just wash off in the rain and the farmers would have to be spraying every 5 minutes.

MangoTango · 25/04/2011 23:12

I think next time you see her you should express surprise at things she does. "I can't believe you don't defluff your dc's socks before putting them on." "I can't believe you didn't wipe down that toy with a toy wiping cloth before giving it to your dc!" "What? You didn't pat down the ham before adding it to the sandwich?" etc.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 25/04/2011 23:55

Surely you soak them in Miltons for half an hour before rinsing them in Evian and using the electric grape dryer mentioned before.
I know I do.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 25/04/2011 23:56

All joking aside, I did know a woman who used diluted miltons and then mineral water to rinse fruit for her DC.
I, on the other hand, have a grape refuser.

firstsupermum · 26/04/2011 00:01

yes, i do wash them but never dry them, no need, the most important thing for me is that they get washed.
if she dry them than good for her, thats her way, you dont have to folow it Smile

Katisha · 26/04/2011 00:06

The best way to avoid problems is to take your grapes in fermented liquid form. Wine glasses are best for this technique.

euphrosyne · 26/04/2011 00:25

what Ishani said

KatieMiddleton · 26/04/2011 00:41

I am both a grape washer and dryer Blush but this is because DS has an aversion to wet food.

Oh god I'm going to be one of those MILs aren't I?!

SpeedyGonzalez · 26/04/2011 00:46

Lecce, I am reporting this thread. You are clearly an abusive mother who has no regard for the delicate balance of water in your children's mouths. Do you not realise that water on grapes will rot their teeth and over-moisten their brains? Not to mention the recently proven deleterious effects on fertility. I am going to call SS on you in the morning; what appalling behaviour.

Grin
ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 26/04/2011 00:50

Ryoko - you are seriously misguided if you think that washing fruit & veg under the tap removes much of any of those things.

If I wash grapes I tend to dry them on paper towel - partly because of the fact that it helps to kill the germs (same reason why it's as important to dry your hands properly, as it is to wash them properly) but mostly because I'd be drying my hands anyway so dry the fruit then my hands on the paper towel....

It wouldn't bother me if someone else didn't dry them though, I probably wouldn't even notice.

I must say though - that I think katisha has the best solution - [bugrin]
