about a topic, read relevant books/websites, digest the information, then write about the topic (seven subheadings to cover) using all your own words, plus illustrate appropriately?

I understand what some people say but why should the brighter kids be held back because other kids cant or wont do it.

algebra every day .....how?

what about logs do you use them too?

My almost seven year old could not do an independent research project. He can't type or use a PC alone, he can only just read, he doesn't know how to research a project.
But then he wouldn't be expected to. Plenty enough time for this stuff later on. Its entirely unnecessary and wouldn't aid his educational achievement whatsoever.

This surprises me as you seem very intelligent and capable but your 7 year old cannot use a pc or do research on his own. That is unheard of in my sons school [state] they have a pc for the children in reception class. And not be able to research anything ...can he read?

SardineQueen · 27/04/2011 11:49

I don't think that giving more complicated tasks in class and stuff that will be managed by average students at home will hold anyone back.

What is the point of demoralising 29 children by giving the homework that only 1 of them will actually be able to do in the way it's intended to be done? It doesn't make sense to me.

If you give children the impression that they are no good at something then quite a lot of them will simply give up. That's not helpful at all.

goodbyemrschips · 27/04/2011 11:52

You have to put some of the blame on the teachers then, my ds class is split into four groups and I know they all get different homework and spellings etc.

So really the teacher should be blamed for setting a homework across the board when clearly some kids are not capable enough to do it.

SardineQueen · 27/04/2011 11:53

You expect 7yo children to be able to go to the library and locate appropriate reference books off their own bat? To use the internet unaided and locate appropriate reference materials ie not stuff that is a load of old rubbish?

I don;t think so. Children that age do not have the background or underlying knowledge to be able to come to a conclusion about the quality of information they are gleaning from the internet. Many adults don't have that skill. I also think that navigating library catalogue systems and locating appropriite books in the library is a skill for an older child, something else that many adults can;t manage TBH.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 27/04/2011 11:54

what do you mean how? Hmm

no seven year old needs to do this stuff, though it doesn't surprise me that the likes of you only cares about your own kid at the expense of others.

I could have mine reading Tolstoy and be looking down on yours for not keeping up, but it wouldn't be either age appropriate or inclusive, which is the point you appear to have missed.

goodbyemrschips · 27/04/2011 11:56

Sardine queen.......I disagree my 9 year old can look up reference books in the library print of stuff from the internet and write down info he reads from it as can most of his class.

I am amazed some parents children cannot do this. [at aged 9 it is basic stuff]

SardineQueen · 27/04/2011 11:56

A 9 year old is not a 7 year old Hmm

goodbyemrschips · 27/04/2011 11:57

how do you use algebra?

maybe 7 year olds don't need to do this but if they find they can and with ease why not?

can your child read?

SardineQueen · 27/04/2011 11:57

Not that I have either Grin

But I assume there is quite a difference between a 7yo and a 9yo?

How does your 9yo check that the information he is obtaining from the internet is accurate? There is a lot of rubbish on the internet.

goodbyemrschips · 27/04/2011 11:58

My son was doing this sort of task at 7

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 27/04/2011 11:58

and as for your other questions, if you'll notice, my son is 6 not seven, and thankfully not in the UK system. We're in one where they satrt school later, learn to read later, yet have higher literacy rates as well as maths and science scores across the board. So I'm quite happy with our schools.

Reading does not equal research, I can only imagine what research you are capable of if you haven't worked out the difference. No, my children are not allowed to use a computer alone, obviously six year olds are not able to google safely and effectively. Thats called sensible parenting.

SardineQueen · 27/04/2011 11:58

No my child can't read. She is 3.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 27/04/2011 11:58

stop lying.

goodbyemrschips · 27/04/2011 12:00

I do care about my child yes [sorry about that] but if the teacher is setting the tasks is is his/her responsibility to set them appropriately as in ''don't hold my child back'' and ''don't demoralize the others''

SardineQueen · 27/04/2011 12:01

I think that turning off 90% of students in order to cater to 10% is not on.

I think that anyone who would think this desirable, was a pretty selfish person, frankly.

goodbyemrschips · 27/04/2011 12:02

READING DOES NOT EQUAL RESEARCH

I would like to see someone research something if they couldn't read............that did make me chuckle.

SardineQueen · 27/04/2011 12:02

No she really is 3 winter Grin

I want to know how a 7yo has the experience and wherewithall to verify that the information they are independently gleaning from the internet is accurate.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 27/04/2011 12:03

Chuckle some more dimwit, you need more than reading to research, clearly you don't understand this simple concept. Hmm

Yes mrschips -my 9 year old year 4 dd can do this too.

My 7 year olds Y2 ds can't though and the OP's son was only in Year 1

goodbyemrschips · 27/04/2011 12:04

, my ds class is split into four groups and I know they all get different homework and spellings etc.

This is not turning off 90% of the students this is grouping them into order of ability.

SardineQueen · 27/04/2011 12:04

Am also a bit at research = reading.

SardineQueen · 27/04/2011 12:06

mrchips how do you know that this is the method the teachers are using in the examples on this thread?

It seems that at least some of them are not - if children with SN are being given the same homework as their classmates irrespective of little things like them not being able to read.

goodbyemrschips · 27/04/2011 12:06

I understand well thanks. [winter]

goodbyemrschips · 27/04/2011 12:07

sardine.....that is why i say it is the teachers fault, he/she should be sorting out abilitys.
