just seen Kate (HRH to be) and another 29 year old woman referred to as girls in the press.
surely by that age you are a woman

I'm 34 and HATE being refered to as a woman makes me feel old! I'm hanging on desperatley to being called a girl!

lubeybooby · 23/04/2011 09:25

Yes she's a woman but.....I'm 31 this year and still refer to myself as a girl sometimes .. eg "oooh thank you, I'm a lucky girl!" when I got a lovely pressie recently.

I am in my thirties and many of my friends are in their forties but we always call ourselves girls.

CalamityKate · 23/04/2011 09:29

I'm nearly 44 and someone described me as a girl a while ago and I beamed for a week.

Prunnhilda · 23/04/2011 09:29

Nothing wrong with being a woman, it has better connotations than girl (child/adolescent).
I think it is more idiomatic than actually disrespectful, but I dislike hearing 'girls' for a group of women, all the same.

colditz · 23/04/2011 09:29

I'm 30, and despite wht my father thinks, I'm a woman. If my 25 year old brother is a man, then I am a woman!

AlpinePony · 23/04/2011 09:31

I agree with you on principle - however, given the "life experience" of this one, girl seems apt.

Meglet · 23/04/2011 09:33

I'm nearly 37 and get dead grumpy when I realise that I am technically a woman. Makes me think of a middle aged person in M&S clothes.

I have issues with getting older Blush.

Spudulika · 23/04/2011 09:34

Had exactly the same thought when I heard that report. She's not a girl. She's a woman.

colditz · 23/04/2011 09:34

I have issues with not being taken seriously.

I don't mind very old people calling me a girl, as the age gap there means they cannot judge my age within 15 years, as I can't judge theirs.

Shoesytwoesy · 23/04/2011 09:35

AlpinePony the other woman was the one who was killed (captain Lisa Head) so I am sure she had a lot of "life experience"

dreamingofromance · 23/04/2011 09:37

She sure doesnt look like a "girl". Ageing fast that one.

noodle69 · 23/04/2011 09:38

I am a girl and my husband is a lad and we are 27. Hopefully it will be many years before people look at us and think we look like a man and a woman as it means we are looked old and haggard.

noodle69 · 23/04/2011 09:40

Also I definitely wouldnt describe Kate or William as girls or lads. They look really old for their ages

Men are referred to as boys when they go out drinking together or watch football, or play cricket or what ever.

My MIL goes on holiday with "the girls" sometimes. None of them are under 60.

It depends on the context. Girls and boys are seen as having fun.

Are girls less important than woman? Confused

Northernlurker · 23/04/2011 09:43

My 13 year old daughter is a girl. I am a woman. So is Kate Middleton and Lisa Head. Referring to them in the press as 'girls' diminshes them. Of course people refer to themselves in that way. I think that is a different usage and tbh you can call yourself what the hell you like. My mother may refer to sister and I as the 'girls' because she's done so for 32 years and it's a term of endearment. If my employer does so I will be narked!

Prunnhilda · 23/04/2011 09:44

I feel very out of place here. It's incredibly depressing to think that some of you think woman = frumpy, boring, ground down, past it etc.
Women are amazing. (Men are too. So are girls and boys but they are juveniles.)

noodle69 · 23/04/2011 09:44

Exactly going out with the boys or lads/girls. When you stop thinking you fit in that bracket then you are past it. End of Wink

Older people tend to refer to you as a 'girl'. I am nearly 40 and my mum does sometimes.

BoneyBackJefferson · 23/04/2011 09:46

StewieGriffinsMomSat 23-Apr-11 09:27:45

No man her age would be called a boy.

--------

really

I'm 39 and often get referred to a boy.

LynetteScavo · 23/04/2011 09:49

Would that be because you go out drinking with your mates and watch a lot of football, BoneyBackJefferson? Wink

noodle69 · 23/04/2011 09:52

Yeah it isnt just looking lots of older for your age. Its also attitude etc. I agree with Lynette boys and girls have fun regardless of age. It doesnt look like William and Kate ever get any of that. I would classify Harry as a boy cause he would blatantly be the fun one of the two of them. Same goes for Chelsy Davy. They actually look like people who know how to have a good time.
