Have had a bunny stalking fox for few weeks, well finaly the poor bunny has been got Sad

the fox undone the catch on the run and had her out. I was sat out aswell, went for wee and check on dd in bed before bringing her in. I managed to scare fox and it dropped the rabbit, who legged it behind shed, but she has gone under and I cant see or hear her. Im guessing shes either died or if not wont fare well over night.

Of all bloody weekends aswell. what do I say to 5 yr old dd ?Sad any wise words?

How awful, what a horrible situation.
I hope the rabbit's ok, is there any way you can move the hutch/run nearer the shed so it can find a safe place if it's alive?
I'd just be straight with DD if possible. Good luck

I am sorry you find yourself in this situation. I would try to get it out from under the shed. If not I would tell DD that it ran off with the Easter Bunny.

Good luck.

I am all for telling a white lie in these situations... and would maybe say bunny has gone away because it is Easter and bunnies have to go hiding easter eggs.... then if the bunny does come back out (possible if she isnt badly injured and just in shock)... it will explain her "absence"

I dont think telling the truth would be nice in the circumstances and might give a small child nightmares.

The rabbit may just be hiding and frightened. In your position I would sit quietly for a while near the shed and watch out for the rabbit. If seh doesn't emerge then as someone else said move the run/hutch nearer if possible. Could you shine a torch under shed to have a look? Sorry, must be really upsetting for you.
It sounds as if you may have caught the fox early enough?

I think maybe the fox will be watching and waiting for a good opportunity to go back.
My friend had a fox nest overlooking her rabbits' garden - they would refuse to go into the open run even though it was safe and always hide near the hutch.
Yours might be needing a familiar place, I hope it's ok and you are too

I have been out and secured one end and jammed hutch with door open against side of shed so she can get into hutch. Will get my tourch out and fix the chicken wire above gate now.

will keep checking untillI go to bed.

I hope she will go in hutch, its not been used since fox has been about, she has been sleeping in the kitchen, under the table.

I got her, so bloody relived. poor thing she is fine. I checked side of shed and could see her little bunny bum, clicked my fingers and called her. god knows how but she turned around. she goes mad for my bare feet so I give her a wiggle of my toes and she came out. a bit shaken but no obviouse injuries.

just need to be vigalent from here on, this is the second time its happened and I was sure I had secured the garden.

thanks for all your posts Grin

time to have her as a house rabbit?

Report

Carrotsandcelery · 22/04/2011 22:39

Thank goodness for that biggy. Can she be a house bunny for a while until the fox gets bored and goes elsewhere?

Tell her a bloody fox killed her rabbit. Otherwise we end up with endless generations believing that foxes are nice.

I am so pleased. I hope that the problem does not re-occure. Are there any fox deterrants you could install?

OK, I will tell you my story...when I was about 5/6 I had a wabbit which the fox (spits) got.

My mother was equal to the fox's guile, when I came down the next day, I was told bunny had gone on her hols... two days later a post card arrived on the mat telling me what a great holiday she was having... then at the end of the fortnight a letter arrived telling me how she had a boyfriend and a new job and she was sorry but she was going to stay. I remember going into the garden with my mum to pick a lettuce to send to her in her new hutch.

TBH I kinda forget this until my sister reminded me when I was in my very late 20s but it all came back... but I still think my mum had a great imagination and understanding of children cos I forgot until I needed to remember.

she has pretty much been a house bunny lately, but I tend to have her in the run when im home and bring her in when i go out and night since the fox has been around.

I did look at fox deterents on line, but so expensive and not convinced they would work, but hey, no expences spared when you invest in a pet for dcs I suppose.

thanks everyone, I went into panick mode, you all helped spare a poor bunny this good friday. [bugrin]

My bunny rabbit died on easter sunday [busad]
How tragic is that?

Glad you got her and she is safe. Its not just foxes either, a decent sized rat with have your bunny or ginuea pig given half the chance. I remember one evil bastard getting my cousins white one at hers when we were kids, the scene was horrific.
My uncle went out with his shotgun and blew the bastards head off.
