to think the solution in the current climate is to stop free handouts and stop praising those who are to lazy to work?

I can' t believe how bad the economy is, how the Uk is becoming crowded with Migrants with some that dont even work or participate, having Brits that dont want to work because there better off on benefits. I think Italy has a great strategy if you dont work you dont get paid basta?

Does that mean I should cancel my Praising Those Too Lazy to Work Garden Party? I'd bought balloons and everything Sad

purepurple · 22/04/2011 12:46

You really can't blame the unemployed and the rest of society's underclass for claiming benefits. They didn't create the mes society is in. They are the victims of a society that values money and wealth over individuals.

Nick Griffin. O' he walks amongst us...

Hammy02 · 22/04/2011 12:57

You can't just stop benefits but I agree that something needs to be done. The problem is that wages are too low but I can't see the Tories upping the minimum wage. There should never be a case where someone is better off not working than working. Regardless of how many children you have.

crystalglasses · 22/04/2011 12:59

If some posters think immigrants take jobs that the British are too lazy to do, sure the anser is to make these Brits take the jobs rather than claim benefits? Simples?

PrincessFiorimonde · 22/04/2011 13:00

OP, you are of course quite right. As I recently posted on another thread, let's abolish child benefit and tax credits too. And doing away with the NHS would also save us quite a few quid.

Hammy02 · 22/04/2011 13:05

Yes, get rid of child benefit & tax credits. Not the NHS though.

Aeei : Are you talking about multinational bankers with cash salted away in off shore tax havens? No? Maybe you could look into that....

Have to go against the flow here and say that imo there is actually nothing wrong with saying that nobody should get a free ride in life. What is wrong with people putting food on their own table?

As a basic idea that is. Now, along with that should be a fantastic system to support those who are unable to work through ill health or disability. Also a high level of support for those people who find themselves without work, while they find something else.

And, of course, there would need to be something in place to find something for everyone to do. because let's face it - there really aren't enough jobs being advertised.

But the idea of doing something in return for any state support you may receive, unless you are a vulnerable, ill or disabled person, is not evil or uncaring. I think it is fair. Everyone should contribute. Everyone should give something to the system, to the country. And in return, those in need are well supported. And when I say well supported, I mean far better than they are now!

I do think that not working, if you are physically capable of working, should not be an option. If there is no paid employment available, then there should be some other contribution to society.

Now. The whole migrant thing - my husband is an immigrant. His life has not been easy here! "No recourse to public funds". That means no benefits, no nothing. Hell, he couldn't even be named on our housing association tenancy! The Daily Mail will have you believe that people flock to this country and are met at dover with the keys to a council house and five grand a month in benefits. That is not true. In exceptional circumstances people are helped but more often than not, they aren't. and in fact are entitled to far less than others here. I have been married for 13 years. It was only last year. Yes - LAST YEAR! that my husband got indefinate leave to remain and his restrictions were removed. So on that count, my advice would be to stop buying the Daily Mail.

Re the brits who won't work therefore 'migrants' do the jobs. On that count, you have a point. I have heard so so so many times, british born people saying that they won't do . Like it's beneath them. And we do have a problem with everyone wanting to be a pop star and nobody wanting to be a plumber. I think that to try to deny that is pointless. It happens.

And how many times do you hear people say that they are better off on the dole? If that is true, that is a system failure because you should NEVER be financially better off not working.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with discussing this issue or with expressing dissatisfaction with a system that has it all arseways up.

MaisyMooCow · 22/04/2011 15:17

Don't worry OP, David Cameron is going to help you!

nobiggy · 22/04/2011 15:19

I think employers who don't pay a fair living wage, instead leaving the taxpayer to provide benefits to their employees to make up the shortfall should be ashamed, the greedy bastards.

coccyx · 22/04/2011 15:21

Can't blame the migrants for everything....on the news last night 1,000's been on incapacity benefit for 10 years as fat, alcoholic, druggie or all 3!!

coccyx · 22/04/2011 15:25

and there is a quarry near my home time.....full of hardworking migrants.....company got fed up with idle british who were always moaning, off sick or on a tea break.
Good on them i say, in their home country they are brought up with a work ethic rather than here where it can be a lifestyle choice to live off the taxpayer

sausagesandmarmelade · 22/04/2011 15:25

Basta = enough!

Italy has it's own problems with immigration though...as well as all the other things..corruption etc etc

Wonder what will become of the Berlusconi trial

doley · 22/04/2011 15:43

Hecate that is awful they made you both suffer like that ...what a long time for stability .

My DH is not from the UK either ,but we didn't have to wait longer than a year for him to be without restrictions/benefits/names on things (not that we claimed any )

This was back in 1996 :)

woollyideas · 22/04/2011 15:43

[bubiscuit] troll

doley · 22/04/2011 15:44

to wait for stability ...obviously :)

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 22/04/2011 15:47

Oh yes. It was a bloody mess. In the end we had to get one of those immigrants rights groups involved. Our situation was very complicated. I don't think he would thank me for detailing it here though Grin Still, all's well that ends well.

Rhinestone · 22/04/2011 15:49

"Don't" has an apostrophe and when you're writing the shortened form of "they are" it's "they're", NOT "there".

If you're going to have a Daily Mail-style, slightly racist rant, then at least write your own language correctly. Otherwise people may think you're a bit of an ignorant idiot.

JaneS · 22/04/2011 15:54

Hecate that sounds scary. Sad

DH has lived here since he was 7 and still doesn't have indefinite leave to remain, but I think we're on the home stretch now ... in two years' time he can apply for it and with luck he will get it. He pays more tax than a non-immigrant, incidentally.

Rhinestone · 22/04/2011 15:58

Hecate speaks sense as always.

Glad you DH is here to stay now! Has he started reading the DM yet?! Wink
