To not really like the hot weather?

WriterofDreams · 20/04/2011 09:42

Please tell me I'm not alone. Everyone is raving about the hot weather we're having at the moment but I really don't like it. I like sunshine but the heat really wears me out and I absolutely hate sweating. The last couple of days I've been completely wiped out in the evening from it. I don't mind heat too much when I'm on holiday and I can spend all day in the sea or the pool but when I have to go about my normal business I much prefer sunny and cold.

Am I completely on my own in this one?

I have to say it's equally ludicrous to be wearing a bikini as to think it's too hot!

EmmaBemma · 20/04/2011 12:26

It's neither reasonable nor unreasonable to dislike hot weather - how silly! It's not a rational thing at all, you're either physically comfortable or you're not. People can argue with you all they like but if you're too hot, you're too hot!

Hot? Do you live in Arizona or something?

I'm on the South Coast and it's only about 21 degrees - lovely sunshine, pleasantly warm but stretching it to call it hot.

Meow75 · 20/04/2011 12:32

Perception of air temperature is like perception of colour.

I might say something is red, someone else might say it's orange. We only have our perception of colour because this is what we have been taught.

Perception of air temperature is even stronger than that - it's not taught, you feel what you feel. No-one is right or wrong.

FTR, I think the weather is just about right, warm enough to be out in trousers and t-shirt without a coat or cardi if you wanted. Today I'm in crop jeans and a black t-shirt and feel fine, unless I sit in the living room which is S facing.

I'm not keen on what we had in Nov-Jan, and I thought that summer of 2003 was poor torture. Like a PP, I like Spring and Autumn best, especially as my birthday is October WinkGrin

Ash, Emmabemma, you beat me to it with your voice of reason!! AngryWink

EldritchCleavage · 20/04/2011 12:37

It's how the British do warm weather that's often the problem. Everyone (cafes, pubs, hosts etc) assumes you want to sit in the full sun. It's almost expected you'll wear very little once the temperature rises past about 12 and hot weather is not usual enough for anywhere to be really geared up for it.

I grew up in the tropics where everyone sat in the shade whenever possible, planted trees in car parks so you could park in the shade, and wore light clothes that didn't expose a lot of skin.

I like the heat but I still do all those things. I hate having to be suited up for work in hot weather, though, and using public transport is horrible.

OP, just dress like a 50s film star (hat, shades, blouse, big skirt) and lounge in shade as much as possible!

Hmm at those going "20+ degrees isn't hot". Yes it effing well is! YASooooooNBU, OP!
I literally feel like I'm melting. And it's roughly 21/22 degrees here today. I've got the windows open but it's not helping because there's NO BREEZE.

I loathe the sunshine. And it's not because there's something wrong with my sense of fun (some people seem to think there is if you're adverse to summer weather).
I overheat at anything above 16/17 degrees. I get prickly heat if I'm outside at above 20, and the sunshine means I have to close my living room curtains as they're south-facing and the light from the sun is blinding me. It sucks.

Went outside to practice the walk to the community centre earlier - five minute walk carrying DS, came back literally sweating buckets. Bring on autumn.

WriterofDreams · 20/04/2011 15:37

I agree with what others have said about people thinking you have no sense of fun if you don't like summer. That's totally not the case and I do like the fact that people tend to get together more in the summer. What bugs me is, as Eldritch pointed out, there's no preparation for the weather, everyone wants to sit out in the full sun which to me really is torture. You're seen as a bit of killjoy if you want to get in the shade yet I wouldn't expect anyone to sit out in the cold if it made them uncomfortable. Also I think it's a bit odd that a strong tan is seen as good thing - a tan is a sign that your body is struggling with the sun exposure and is trying to protect itself.

I hate it.

In fact the heat makes me look like this at the mo ----> Angry

Praline · 20/04/2011 17:10

I like the weather fine, but not any hotter please. This is just right. I dislike hotness.

moonstorm · 20/04/2011 17:24

YANBU

I dread the summer and have been HAPPY with the last wet ones (sorry for floods though Sad)

Hate the heat/ sitting/ eating outside. And if anyone mentions the weather is GLORIOUS I don't know what I'll do...

Ephiny · 20/04/2011 17:33

I don't like hot weather much, today is about the maximum temperature I'm OK with. Don't like it at all when it gets into the high 20's/low 30s, commuting in London is just unbearable when it's like that.

Would be fine if I could sit in the shade with a nice cool drink all day, and a pool to dip into! But agree that when you have to go about your normal business too hot is as annoying as too cold/rainy. Worse actually as you can wrap up warm in the winter but there's only so much clothing you can decently take off when it's hot!

Darth Where are you?

We don't have a thermometer "thungy" (was that deliberate? [buconfused]) here in Sleaford, so it would be good to have an idea of where you are. No need for Post codes - general area will suffice!! [buwink]

It was 43c here in Qatar today. However, we have air conditioning that keeps us at 18c thank God. I always struggle with the UK summers now, especially the dilemma of staying at my mum's where you either boil overnight or invite huge spiders in by leaving the bedroom window open. You are totally reasonable. When it rains here I go to the beach and lie in it.

anothermadamebutterfly · 21/04/2011 19:35

What hot weather?
This is just a warm spring.
YABU.
