as 'Dinner' and not 'Tea'.

I don't think it matters-I interchange them for the same meal, depending on mood.

Tea is a drink, bit lazy using it for the name of a meal as well!

NinkyNonker · 17/04/2011 17:15

But if we go out it tends to be dinner... Confused

pranma · 17/04/2011 17:15

tea before 6
dinner 6 to 9
supper after that
have any one,two or three of these
tea becomes 'high' with the addition of a hot, cooked element

juneybean · 17/04/2011 17:15

Boffin do you not mean from doon the mine?

LaurieFairyCake · 17/04/2011 17:15

we have afternoon tea - basically tea/cake/biscuit

dinner - main evening meal

supper (cheese and biscuits when dd is in bed)

I'm Scottish so it's not an upper-class bollocks thing which is probably what the anti-'tea' brigade are meaning

DH says tea sometimes (he's from Yorkshire)

FlamingJamie · 17/04/2011 17:15

breakfast lunch dinner pudding lounge toilet . Tea a drink with jam and bread. Which will bring us back to doh -oh-oh -0h

SecretNutellaFix · 17/04/2011 17:16

shinyshoes- you don't have to eat all those meals!

Usual combination would be afternoon tea (light meal) and dinner(heavier meal) or high tea(heavier meal) then supper (very light meal before bed)

The use of the word "tea" for dinner, when accompanied by a dreadful Australian accent..." heres ya tea clarry" is something to be heard I can tell you!
Entree, dinner and pudding.

FlamingJamie · 17/04/2011 17:17

Or, if you are a hobbit;

Brakfast
Second breakfast
Elevensies
Luch
Afternoon tea

Errrrr dinner?
supper (not sure)

FlamingJamie · 17/04/2011 17:17

And it's pudding. I've heard it called 'sweet' before.

breathing · 17/04/2011 17:17

OMG Im a hobbit!

LaurieFairyCake · 17/04/2011 17:17

People use these phrases (and are rude about them) because they intend them to mean 'U' and 'Non-U'.

More reverse snobbery.

Just like the 'toilet' versus 'loo', 'mirror' versus 'glass', etc etc

ShowOfHands · 17/04/2011 17:18

Afters? Almost as bad as sweet. It's pudding.

And it's dinner unless you keep whippets and/or pigeons.

nometime · 17/04/2011 17:18

We have Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

We have Afternoon Tea on a Sunday when we have had a roast lunch and is usually sandwiches and cake with a cup of tea. Supper is what the children have if they are hungry before bed.

hocuspontas · 17/04/2011 17:18

Have never used the word supper.

For some reason it reminds me of my grandparents slurping tea through their ill-fitting dentures and sucking on bread and butter.

felicity10 · 17/04/2011 17:18

DD has her tea, at tea time, which in our house is about 5pm.
DH and I have dinner at about 7.30, which is dinner time.

YABU, it is dinner and not tea, and should be so whichever end of the country you are from, because I said so. Ahem.

NinkyNonker · 17/04/2011 17:19

Yes, LeQ, I heard that too. When corsets became popular ladies needed to get slimmer, so big luxurious meals were out. To be replaced by cake, obviously. Confused

I am with TheSmallClanger here. I was brought up calling it tea and still do sometimes. But I can easily live with calling it dinner, either one will do. However, I find it really bizarre when people call it supper because when I was a child supper was some very light snack you had with a warm drink before bedtime e.g. a crumpet or a piece of toast or something, and it was usually eaten after you had had a bath and got in to your pyjamas and dressing gown.

Geistesabwesenheit · 17/04/2011 17:19

We have MaccyD breakfast, KFC dinner and Pizza Hut tea. Vom.

boosmummie · 17/04/2011 17:20

Grin breathing isn't it just!!!!!!

Now I'm just off for some tea and cake Grin.

Will be enjoying a light supper later as we had a late lunch today.
