to get annoyed

by people who post their opinions and claim they are facts .
Most posters on here debate well and will argue and counter argue which is what I love about AIBU and MN generally. Most posters will state that this is their personal opinion or will back up their arguments with research etc that back them up. This makes for interesting and informative debate.
BUT some posters wade in with utter bollocks and claim it as fact which is annoying as hell.

Can you back up your opinion with facts? Grin

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 17/04/2011 16:56

I don't want to name names as I fear deletion for personal attacks, but one example recently was someone who claimed as fact that the coil causes abortion and villified the poster for choosing to use one. The coil does not cause abortion but for a vulnerable poster something like that could be distressing . And don't get me started on the claims / counter claims re BF and FF

For every poster who cites their opinion as fact, there are exactly 13.5 posters who have the motivation to google said 'fact' and verbally prove it wrong.

And that is a fact.

TrillianAstra · 17/04/2011 17:01

YANBU.

Some are really silly non-controversial things as well.

I could argue about the healthiness/unhealthiness of aspartame and appreciate that there are two sides.

But if someone says, for example, that Weetabix is really sugary I just wonder what on earth they are thinking. (1.7g of sugar in 2 weetabix, hardly anything)

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 17/04/2011 17:01

I don't mind anyone sharing their opinions but when people spout utter shit and claim it as fact it bugs the beejesus out of me

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 17/04/2011 17:04

(not meaning to have a go - don't even remember who said that about weetabix - but it just struck me as a very odd thing to say)

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 17/04/2011 17:05

I think I spend too much time on here though cause it's the same posters who irritate me by doing this, maybe I should get out more Grin

OP posts:
boosmummie · 17/04/2011 17:09

Definitely not being unreasonable. And as someone who has not stalked you been on several of the same AIBUs as you I know and feel exactly what you mean. I too also ought to get out more but that's a whole new AIBU methinks Grin

There's also the scary factoids in the health sections.

And MNing rather than seeking urgent medical advice.

[shudder emoticon]

boosmummie · 17/04/2011 17:17

I'd keep disagreeing altinkum it makes it more fun Grin

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 17/04/2011 17:17

there is one poster that does it with everything, and has been wrong every single time I've seen them post. I've begun to think they do it on purpose, nobody could be so sure yet so wrong all of the time, could they?

Some people would take these facts bullshit very seriously sometimes I wonder do people think before they post.

Confused

the coil does cause 'abortion' (in reality the fertilised egg to be expelled) if you're very strict Catholic I think.

It doesn't prevent the egg being fertilised, it stops it sticking to the sides doesn't it?

Do modern coils prevent fertilisation then?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 17/04/2011 17:23

The mirena is hormpone based and many coils cause cervical mucus to change in nature thus preventing the sperm reaching the egg at all.

(Disclaimer This would need verifying with a healthcare professional Grin)

How do IUDs work?

They sit in your womb and prevent you from getting pregnant. They do this in three main ways:

* they prevent your partner?s sperm from getting through your womb and into your tubes
* they alter the secretions (mucus) in your cervix, creating a further barrier for sperm
* they affect your womb lining ? making it less likely to ?accept? an egg.

Pretty well all family planning doctors and nurses say that the IUD does not work by ?causing an abortion', as some people have alleged.

TrillianAstra · 17/04/2011 17:24

So I suppose if you had super-sperm that were not put off by points 1&2 and did manage to fertilize an egg, then preventing that egg from implanting could be considered an abortion. If you were really really really strictly religious. But in most cases they stop it before it gets to that point.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/04/2011 17:25

I think that unless they can guarantee that fertilisation doesn't occur then it is not a permitted method according to some churches

By the way I'm not saying I agree with it - that would be insane

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 17/04/2011 17:26

thanks trillain Grin

boosmummie · 17/04/2011 17:28

somewhere in here it tells you that it prevents fertilisation Laurie.

I think it was the case that if one was unknowingly pregnant before having a coil fitted 200 years ago then it would cause a miscarriage. However ime of having the coil fitted they did a test twice before.

Please note with the exception of the link above NONE of what I have said is anything other than what I THINK I know so frankly if i'm wrong do not flame me because I don't give a shit either way!

boosmummie · 17/04/2011 17:29

took so long I x-posted. But we are on the same wavelength it would seem!
