Grrrr - I know I'm overweight, but really!

I am 5'3" and weight 12 stone. Yes, I know I am overweight but have been quite poorly for 3 years and quite sedentary because of it.

I recently had to go into hospital, which necessitated buying a couple of nighties. Because we live in a very rural area my only option was George at Asda. I bought a pack of nighties size 20-22..........and they basically fit where they touch!

Surely at 12 stone I don't need to buy size 24-26 clothes!!!!!

get thee to M&S - I bet you'll fit into a size 16 there.

ClaireDeLoon · 15/04/2011 10:39

You can't be that size - I'm an inch taller, a stone heavier and wearing 16 trousers and 18 top and cardi at the mo.

bubblecoral · 15/04/2011 10:40

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the size on the label. Just buy what fits!

LadyThumb · 15/04/2011 10:59

Thank you Charlotte - you've cheered me up!

Bubble - that's the trouble, I am fed-up buying bigger and bigger sized clothes that don't fit when they should !!!

Claire - where do you get your clothes then???

Well I am a size 16 and Asda size 20 shirts are way too tight on me.

breakfastbiscuit · 15/04/2011 11:02

I have a friend one inch shorter than you and three stone heavier and she wears a size16. Fair enough they are usually vest tops and trackies but they fit her ok.

WorzselMummage · 15/04/2011 11:03

I'm an almost 12 stone 5'4'"er and I wear a 12/14. There is no way you need a 24-26.

Unless you scales are lying to you.

I have 20stone friends that wear a 24.

prettymuchapixiegirl · 15/04/2011 11:04

I'm 5ft 3, 10 stone and a size 10-12. I was 11 stone until a few months ago and was a size 12-14. At only one stone heavier than that I would say that no, you're definitely not a size 24-26. My sister is also 5ft 3 and when she weighed 15 stone she was a size 20.

frgr · 15/04/2011 11:05

are you sure the nighties weren't 20-22 MONTHS Grin

seriously, with your height and weight i'm wondering if they had the wrong labelling? that doesn't sound right (based on my own height and weight)

FabbyChic · 15/04/2011 11:07

You are an inch taller than me, when I was 12 stone five months ago, I was a size 16/18.

Two stone lighter now!

wellwisher · 15/04/2011 11:09

Your weight is not related to your dress size - a pound of fat takes up twice as much space as a pound of muscle so if you've got loads of fast and not much muscle (which is likely if you're sedentary), you could be very large even if you aren't particularly heavy. What are your measurements?

cryhavoc · 15/04/2011 11:11

That's ridiculous. They must be labelled wrong. I'm 5'4, just under 11 stone and am wearing a size 10 skirt and a size 12 jumper. Take them back.

Well done on the weight loss, Fabbychic Grin

wellwisher · 15/04/2011 11:11

Oops - loads of fat not loads of fast! Gah.

ClaireDeLoon · 15/04/2011 11:17

LadyThumb trousers Wallis (their petite only place I have found exactly right for my height, mostly I'm too tall for petite and too short for regular). Top is just a White Stuff vest top and then have a fairly fitted FatFace cardi on top. It does sound like it is Asda sizing.

QueenStromba · 15/04/2011 11:30

I'm 5'3" and 14 and a half stone and I have a size 14 dress from Asda that fits me! I also have a medium jumper from there which is fine but I tried on an 18 skirt when I was probably a stone lighter and it was a tiny bit tight - their sizing is just bonkers there. As someone else said, there was probably a mix up with the labelling.

Honeybee79 · 15/04/2011 11:42

Sizing must be wrong. You can't be that size with your height and weight.

FabbyChic · 15/04/2011 11:43

Thanks Cryhavoc! Feel much better, 10lb to go to get to 9 stone and a size 10.

Mobly · 15/04/2011 11:58

It's probably all down to perspective. Sizing is skewed in some shops too. Alot of you say you wear a size 10 and are around 12 stone, well I wear a size 10s sometimes and I'm 5ft 6 and 8 and a half stone.

It probably depends on how you like your clothes to fit also and what materials you like to wear.

Lots of factors really but I wouldn't judge weight loss by clothing size.

ClaireDeLoon · 15/04/2011 12:03

Mobly I can't actually see even one person who has said they're a size ten at 12 stone on this thread, let alone 'a lot of you'.

Hammy02 · 15/04/2011 12:06

Fab news FabbyChic. How are you losing the weight? I need to pinch some of your motivation.

BigHairyGruffalo · 15/04/2011 13:01

I'm 5'2.5 and 12 stone 5. I'm currently wearing M&S size 12. I can't believe that this sizing lark is so complicated!

hairylights · 15/04/2011 13:04

sorry but you are quite over weight, not just a little bit, so yes, you need the size of clothes that fit your weight!

I am rather overweight, 5'4 and 10st 9 and I am pushing size 14 (I can just bout get away with size 12 but only just).

I suppose it does depend on where you hold your weight. Sadly mine is on my face, my tummy and my bum.

Sidge · 15/04/2011 13:07

Blimey I'm 5 foot 1 and wear a size 10, and I weigh 8 stone 5.

Just goes to show how much variability there is. I was a size 12 when I got up to 9 stone so I could well be a size 20 if I weighed 12 stone.

Hatesponge · 15/04/2011 13:12

There is a lot of variability - I'm 5' 6 and 16 stone, I'm wearing 18-20 at present, when I was 2 stone heavier I was a sz 22.

It's been a long time since I was 10 stone-ish (about 11 years!), but when I was I was a sz 14.

No idea what I'd have to weight to be a size 10!

Hatesponge · 15/04/2011 13:12

weigh not weight!
