To be utterly embarrassed by this Waitrose staff member

I welcome all comments because I genuinely don't know if I am being oversensitive or not.

I visited our local waitrose last week with my 3 children and their friend so 4 under 5. They were all very well behaved (after being threatened warned in the car they wouldn't be getting sweets if they didn't), just a normal shop, no incidents and we went home.

I went back today with just the baby (13 mths). And this is the conversation I had with the man on the checkout.

Waitrose Man: You were in here the other day with loads more children weren't you?

Me: Yes, they're with there grandparents today

Waitrose man: (grinning) yes I remember you, I was on the lottery they were being quite naughty

Me: Hmm er no they weren't

Waitrose man: Yes they were, you said to the baby 'and you can shut up too'

Me: Shock um no I didn't, I wouldn't tell my baby to shut up.

Waitrose man: Yes you did I was on the lottery over there and heard you

Me: (now bloody embarrassed) I can assure you I haven't and wouldn't tell a baby to shut up.

At this point the other checkout woman turns around and says "are you winding someone up again and he laughs and says 'yes, why not'"

He then says to me "are you sure it wasn't you"

Me: Yes I'm sure

Him: Why, would you be in trouble if you did?

I just ignored him at this point and packed my shopping.

Now would you be embarrassed by this? I can't believe he thought it an appropriate conversation in front of a queue of people.

There is no way I told the baby to shut up Angry He actually had me doubting myself for a while, but I know I didn't.

I feel bloody angry now to be accused of crappy parenting in front of a queue of people.

It's almost PA bullying, what a strange person

ovenchips · 16/01/2017 14:20

This thread was started in 2011!

It was a storm in a teacup then. Why oh why has someone resurrected it?

ghostyslovesheets · 16/01/2017 14:20

oh dear David Ross - what a prat - I think you will go poof any second now you spammy bumper who can't spin a yarn to save his life

WinterWonders · 16/01/2017 14:21

What was the outcome? Did you complain?

JennyOnAPlate · 16/01/2017 14:22

Note to self to check the date of every thread before I start reading.

Why are there so many zombie threads lately??

WinterWonders · 16/01/2017 14:22

My last comment was aimed at OP!

SillyMoomin · 16/01/2017 14:26

Hahaha press well seeing as you've turned up on a zombie thread- what happened all those years ago?! Grin

TheJiminyConjecture · 16/01/2017 14:27

Reading through the thread I thought my colours had ballsed up again, nope just me on a name change!

Niskayuna · 16/01/2017 14:29

I'd be speaking to the manager. Someone harassing a new mother with accusations of verbally abusing a child is basically just trying to make someone cry.

Chloe84 · 16/01/2017 14:30

Zombie but it seems like this is all happening in Essex. Chelmsford maybe. And now Billericay.

I love the comment saying 'Please don't tell me this happened in Cambridge, OP'. For the love of God, not Cambridge, pleeeeeease!

Footyfan16 · 16/01/2017 14:31

Can't believe I sat here reading this before realising it was from 2011!!

What was the outcome OP?

HelsBels5000 · 16/01/2017 14:36

I too am intrigued as to the outcome of this one - come on OP - did you get an apology and a bottle of wine hopeful

LadyTmalia · 16/01/2017 14:36

Chelmsford doesnt have a waitrose :D

Stormtreader · 16/01/2017 14:38

You struggle to understand the general limitations of IT don't you? Like, a computer can't magic up £47.00 worth of kippers in a few days, so if doing something important it's probably a good idea to ring ahead and check.

As someone who understands the general limitations of IT very well, its a poorly designed order process that cant flag up orders like this to the customer with a message of "You will need to ring the store to confirm this item is available at the ordered quantities within the order timeframe".

MPerspective · 16/01/2017 14:51

I wouldn't really bother complaining. But if he does something of a similar nature with you again, tell him to apologise or you will sue him and the store for defamation - if he values his job enough, that should shut him up.

Benedikte2 · 16/01/2017 15:10

I would complain for the benefit of other customers. The next customer he upsets might be a fragile mum with pnd to whom it is the last straw. It is no acceptable to humiliate anybody even if there is some truth in the allegations (not inferring there was with you OP)
I doubt they'd sack him if he hasn't received a previous warning but would be put on trolley collecting or picking items for home delivery where he has no customer contact.

Presstheresetbutton · 16/01/2017 15:11

It was Colchester!

I can't remember what happened. Had completely forgotten about it until I read this

PUGaLUGS · 16/01/2017 15:37

He was a twat. I would complain.

ageingrunner · 16/01/2017 15:42

He's probably the manager by now 😳

HookandSwan · 16/01/2017 15:44

Clearly he was trying to be funny and failed!! What an idiot.

HookandSwan · 16/01/2017 15:45

Oh no this thread is from 2011 haha Grin oops need more Cake Brew

HookandSwan · 16/01/2017 15:45

Omg 2011 was 7 years ago argh

Doolallylally · 16/01/2017 16:09

Why on earth has this thread been resurrected?

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 16/01/2017 16:10

Have a nice glass of Chablis and imagine kicking him in the nuts

This will be my mantra for dealing with twats in the future

notangelinajolie · 16/01/2017 16:26

He sounds like the shop joker/idiot. Take it with a pinch of salt and move on, it's not really worth wasting any more of your time worrying about it.

I'd have probably laughed along with him --but then again I don't get out much and somebody paying me a bit of attention would have been nice -
