to think it suddenly seems 'the in-thing' to suffer with bi-polar?

This is really getting to me. Perhaps these 'celebs' really are suffering with bi-polar but I remember the days when it was the biggest taboo. My mother suffers with this illness and it is just awful.

There have been so many and whilst I really believe some I really do not believe Kerry Katona and now Catherine Zeta-Jones. Apparantely, CZJ booked herself into a psychiatric hospital for becoming manic-depressive following her husband's cancer, and now, according to her publicist is "feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on two upcoming films". Perhaps Ms Zeta-Jones should visit a real psychiatric hopsital (not a detox clinic) and see real life patients suffering with this terrible, terrible illness.

I think it's you who is missing the point. Yes some desperate teenagers may make up that they have mh problems/are pregnant or all kinds of bullshit for attention but to suggest that it is widespread like the op has is bullshit.
Can you not see that for people genuinely suffering with mental health problems speculating that vast numbers of people are making it up to be 'trendy' or 'jump on the bandwagon' could be very upsetting?
In general when someone is ill - unless you have hard evidence - to say that they are making it up isn't on surely?

buttonmooncup · 14/04/2011 23:30

And where exactly have you got this exclusive inside info on what 'some celebs' do Longstocking?

Longstocking2 · 14/04/2011 23:32

A bit rude Scottish mummy.
Have now read thread.

Slebs spin most things. That is a fact. So we don't know what's true and probably won't. This couple is a brand, they have contributed to marketing themselves, that's part of their business. It's unlikely that this has not been finessed. I think we won't know the truth of it, that's all I'm saying. She isn't a regular person. She may suffer illness as much if not more than an unfamous person but she is part of an image industry so it is very unlikely that we can know the truth of anything which is said.

einstein1 · 14/04/2011 23:33

Bi Polar

ADHD

SAD

Dyslexia

never existed in my day. Very fashionable, however.

scottishmummy · 14/04/2011 23:34

well dont leap in after 300+messages chirrup not read thread but...
and expect no comment

steps101 · 14/04/2011 23:35

I think the point that some people are trying to make is that if you want anyone to believe that you are mentally ill, you have to act "mentally ill," all the time. Do it as visibly as possible: rant and rave, walk around in kerayzee outfits, just generally be a total fuck up.
If you are functioning, solvent, employable, and have successful relationships, don't expect anyone to believe that you have a mental illness which is just well-managed and under control. CZJ has failed to act like a fucking loon in the public eye, therefore she cannot possibly be mentally ill. QED.

buttonmooncup · 14/04/2011 23:35

Either they never existed or did exist and weren't understood or diagnosed.

bipolar not in your day?you must predate ancient greece and 1913 emile krapelin observation of manic depression.or be making it all

which is it

Longstocking2 · 14/04/2011 23:38

buttonmoon, because every week a story is changed to catch up with the facts, endlessly slebs present things as A which are probably or turn out to be B.
I'm not saying that they shouldn't, it's just that the evidence is that many of them do.

The late Princess of Wales is a good example, she said wildly different things to different people, said she was being tormented by the press (which she was of course) denied colluding with the press (which she absolutely did) denied helping with the andrew morton biography (we now know she did) etc etc etc
I interviewed Max Clifford once, like him or not, he makes it perfectly clear that celebrity is an image/brand business for good or ill, they all end of spinning stuff whether they like it or not unless the bow out completely.

buttonmooncup · 14/04/2011 23:39

steps Grin
I think I might have to work on my mental public persona - wouldn't want anyone thinking I was trying to be trendy - although what I've been diagnosed with isn't trendy at the moment - I'm not sure whether I should try and upgrade to bipolar or hang on and see if my condition comes into fashion.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 14/04/2011 23:39

Has the OP suggested that vast numbers of people are making it up?

That would be very unreasonable.

Conditions do become fashionable which is crap. At one point just about every bloody female 'personality' had a 'breast cancer scare' which would gaurentee loads of column inches for a week or too. Very insulting to women dealing with Breast Ca.

I remember it clearly because DD had cancer at the time (not breast cancer). It used to drive me to fucking distraction.

But I suppose it was a product of better awareness of breast cancer.

buttonmooncup · 14/04/2011 23:40

I don't doubt that celebrities control their public image I just think that very few would stoop as low as to fabricate a serious health problem. They would have serious egg on their face if it came out that they were lying.

steps101 · 14/04/2011 23:41

button - I'd wait if I were you. Bipolar's day in the limelight is surely coming to a close, and there's nothing worse than having last season's mental illness Blush

scottishmummy · 14/04/2011 23:42

not disputing media manipulation and brand management but in no way is mental illness this season new must have.

Champersonice · 14/04/2011 23:42

Button, I really have had enough of you and you are REALLY grating and on MY thread!

Get your facts right - stuff you are accusing me of is, using your words, bullshit!

OP posts:
buttonmooncup · 14/04/2011 23:44

thefirstMrsDeVere there's a difference between a d-list celebrity doing an interview about a lump they found in their breast that turned out to be nothing to gain a bit of publicity/sympathy around the time Kylie had breast cancer, for example, and someone categorically saying that they have cancer when they haven't.

buttonmooncup · 14/04/2011 23:44

Champersonice · 14/04/2011 23:46

MrsDeVere, to put the record straight, it is fools like button that are mis-quoting me and making others believe her drival rather than my actual thoughts on the subject. I have never once said it is widespread...that will save you reading back over 300 or so posts.

OP posts:
Champersonice · 14/04/2011 23:48

Champers what have I said that's bullshit? I asked you to clarify what you meant by people 'jumping on the bipolar bandwagon' and you refused to answer.

Champersonice · 14/04/2011 23:49

Steps, you make me laugh A LOT!

steps101 · 14/04/2011 23:49

Champers - you should argue that it was a social experiment. That's usually a good one :)
