Seriously, what are they trying to achieve? It smacks of a cheap publicity stunt to show how considerate they are of the poor people (us) and in (fake) compassion not to make use of their impressive resources and have a holiday in private on someone's yacht?
Seriously!

"It is literally about nothing. There is no issue here at all. If you can get exercised about the Camerons buggering off for a cheapie weekend on Ryanair then how on earth do you get through the day without expiring from outrage? Get soemthing better to get angry about, and quickly, before you drown in your own triviality."

well I think this is marvellously put and deserves a gentle round of applause

tattycoram · 10/04/2011 22:44

I thought that drivingmisscrazy. My DS2 is coming up for six months and there is no way I would leave him for that long

hairfullofsnakes · 10/04/2011 22:47

I agree - cheap publicity stunt - they must think we are all fucking stupid!

notprEGGersjustchocolate · 10/04/2011 22:53

Ha ha ha, do you think they got one of those express boarding pass for an extra £12 or did they wait at the boarding gate and shove their way in?
Wonder if the trolly dollies did a live show for them instead of just waving their arms to a voiceover in a bored manner during the in-flight safety check?
I hate Ryanair. nobody should have to fly Ryanair!
He could have at least picked Easyjet - they are only very slightly a little better.
Can't wait for the pool shots (remember Blair in the jazzy shorts?)

paddypoopants · 10/04/2011 22:59

If I was Samantha Cameron I would be well pissed off having a cheapo, ryanair, 3 star hotel mini break for my 40th birthday just so Dave looks like he's in it with the rest of us. Patronising bastard.
Somehow I don't think it was a normal person who took the photo of them at the airport- normal people wouldn't have been allowed within 40ft to take photos of them. It is just like something from The Thick of It.

Artichokes · 10/04/2011 23:01

Couldn't care less about their hold. Impossible choice for all politicians.

I am however left speechless by this: Cameron films a skit as Stig for Jeremy Clarkson's birthday bash

PumpkinBones · 10/04/2011 23:07

I want all politicians to go on Haven holidays. Except not where I am Grin

Want2bSupermum · 10/04/2011 23:08

paddy - I had the same thoughts when I saw this thread. It is her birthday and he is making a publicity stunt out of it. They could have taken a weekend away without all of the publicity. I don't care where DC and SC go on their holidays. I do care that they pay for it themselves.

Plenty of multimillionaires fly easyjet and ryanair. I used to fly with easyjet for ski weekends for work and the majority of the passengers were easily millionaires.

HipHopopotomus · 10/04/2011 23:30

While they are away I wonder if I could holiday at Checkers? That wld suit my lot for a week or 2 this year (no other holiday in sight for us)

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 11/04/2011 07:58

so, basically, they are wrong if they take an expensive holiday because they are rubbing our noses in it
they are wrong if they take a cheaper holiday because they have money so it is clearly wrong to take a cheap holiday and probably a publicity stunt
what about taking no holiday? I'm guessing they'd be wrong for that too. Grin

So. what should they do? what would be the right thing to do?

  • and no, I'm not a tory Grin
onceamai · 11/04/2011 08:08

Why wouldn't you do what the Cameron's have done. My DH earns more than DC but we'd go on a break like that and thoroughly enjoy it. We always drive down to the South of France because there is no way we would spend money on air fares and then hire a car on top. And we stay in a modest villa rather than a big luxury job. The DH will often book special deals for trips to and from the continent and the savings more than make up for the odd one that has to be rescheduled and full prices paid. He travels to the continent weekly and if he can get Ryan Air he will - why pay BA Business rates for a short flight if you don't have to.

earthworm · 11/04/2011 08:57

George Osborne got a kicking in the press earlier in the year for taking an expensive skiing holiday, so they can't win really.

And completely wrong to criticise them for leaving Florence at home - what's wrong with a couple taking a break without their children to celebrate a special birthday?

drivingmisscrazy · 11/04/2011 09:36

earthworm nothing at all - just think Florence is a wee bit young, maybe? it was more that I was amused by the Skynews piece which seemed to imply that it was because it was term-time. had mental image of 6 month old baby at school!

HipHopopotomus · 11/04/2011 14:43

Actually when it comes to PM's holidays I don't care what party they are from - he's the friggin PM of a rather large country, and the country I live in.

It is an extremely stressful and full on job. He deserves a holiday and he should be able to take one where he can relax properly, get a little revived and get some quality family time while he can - so for those reasons they are being very unreasonable to attempt to take a 'dumbing down' kind of Ryanair/lowcost jolly to earn political points. R&R should be the priority, & he can well afford it as we all know.

You're the PM FFS - have a proper holiday so you can come back to work and do the best job you can (even if I think you are rubbish at it, I still want the UK's PM to do the best job he is capable of)

frgr · 11/04/2011 14:45

It's so transparent, that's the problem I have with it.

By all means try and offend segments of the electorate the least, but will anyone be fooled?!

Hammy02 · 11/04/2011 14:53

HipHop - I agree. Cameron has a difficult and very busy job to do so who would begrudge him a decent holiday in a 5 star resort, flying business class. Personally, if I had £30 million in the bank I wouldn't work at all. I'd spend my life lying on a yacht doing sweet FA!

ilovecrisps · 11/04/2011 14:56

Agree there's nothing really budget about having a foreign holiday at Easter is there?

Heathrow would be much closer to them

WOnder if the cost of the nanny exceeded the cost of the holiday

However I really agree with he is a loaded PM what's wrong with him having a decent holiday?

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 11/04/2011 15:03

Andrew Lloyd Webber flies BMI. He said so on Piers Morgan on Saturday. Grin And he's waaaaaaaaay more loaded than Dave 'n' Sam.

tralalala · 11/04/2011 15:11

leave the cheap seats for those that can afford it dave.

working9while5 · 11/04/2011 15:27

The reasons Cameron "can't win" aren't particularly trivial at all, having far more to do with things like, oh, decimating the NHS while pretending that he's in it with the rest of us than whether or not Ryanair do the only direct flight to Granada.

All together now:
"You'll never live like common people,
you'll never do what common people do,
you'll never fail like common people,
you'll never watch your life slide out of view,
and dance and drink and screw,
because there's nothing else to do.

Sing along with the common people,
sing along and it might just get you through,
laugh along with the common people,
laugh along even though they're laughing at you,
and the stupid things that you do.
Because you think that poor is cool."

working9while5 · 11/04/2011 15:31

In a fit of nostalgia, I went to look for Common People on Youtube and found

porcamiseria · 11/04/2011 16:22

what can they do? not have a holiday? better than that goerge cunt face in Klosters

peanutbutterkid · 11/04/2011 19:14

I agree with CocktailQueen.

Abr1de · 12/04/2011 11:00

'just think Florence is a wee bit young, maybe? '

She must be eight months old. WHy shouldn't she be just fine with a good nanny for two or three days?

Incidentally I believe George O stayed in a friend's apartment in Kloesters, not in some swanky hotel. Again, why shouldn't he? Until comparatively recently PMs would be off for almost the whole summer and the country didn't seem to collapse.

Finallyspring · 12/04/2011 13:19

I'm going to repeat what lots of other people have said. I am not not not a Tory or even lib dem voter but I don't understand how/why people can't separate people from politics. As lots of other people have said David Cameron can't win. Expensive holiday= posh, flash. Cheap holiday=cynical publicity stunt. Just stick with the policies. BTW anyway really posh people don't bother with flash stuff. The Blair's holidays were more vulgar because they did not have that upper class confidence to just go somewhere without bothering how it looks. Cameron is just the sort of person to take low key holidays, that's what really posh people do. Posh is not Victoria Beckham you know
