I know that they cost more, but surely it is worth the extra to know the bird has had a better standard of living.

opinion not abuse

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 20:50

How is it competitive poorness when people keep coming on saying, 'Oh, you could afford it if you really wanted to?'

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 20:51

Same difference, south, don't much care either way.

slartybartfast · 08/04/2011 20:52

someone is going to have egg on their face soon

Grin
southeastastra · 08/04/2011 20:52

FunnyBumbleBee · 08/04/2011 20:52

Grin slartybartfast!

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 20:53

Battery egg, slarty, or free-range?

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 20:53

I'm not having a go at you specifically expat.

It's a sore point for all of us to have people come on and say we shouldn't feed our kids eggs to get some decent protein in them for as little cash as physically possible if we can't be nice to chickens at the same time.

But snipping at each other doesn't help either.

slartybartfast · 08/04/2011 20:53

that is the question expat.

lets say, one of each - for arguments sake Grin

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/04/2011 20:53

Organic was the fist thing to go out of the window when we got skinter.

Apart from the milk.

I buy the cheapest of just about everything. Unless it turns about to be a false economy. Some of the 'savers' stuff is a bit rubbish so you have to go up one notch. Washing up liquid being an example.

Luckily none of my lot are fussy. OH was youngest of 12 so was bought up on rice and stew and my DCs will eat anything.

I hear tesco is doing pasta for 9p! Has anyone tried that?

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 20:54

Don't see anyone sniping, tbh.

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 20:54

No?

Bugger!

Really annoyingly we only have a small tesco so it doesn't have all the value products.

Itsjustafleshwound · 08/04/2011 20:55

I'm only yolking .....

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 20:55

A Tesco would be ace!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 20:55

I go value range for all fruit/veg and some dried goods/household stuff. DH was most confused when he went to his mum's house and the toilet paper didn't sand his arse Grin

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 08/04/2011 20:56

Oh. I was only trying to be nice. :(

awubble · 08/04/2011 20:57

I love runny yolks and im not a fan of salmonella so I never buy free range to lessen that risk, if i have a choice then i will buy Barn eggs every time.

mmm, now i fancy boiled egg......

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 20:57

9p pasta!

Damn you small store.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/04/2011 20:57

I dont think it was competitive poorness. People describing their financial state to explain why FR eggs are not on the top of their lists at the moment. Or to prove they are not prosperous and dont know what they are on about.

It wasnt just random woeismeness. All in context.

Punkatheart · 08/04/2011 20:57

Zukiecat - well said. Cruelty is cruelty.

I am sorry but if any of you witnessed battery conditions you would vomit.

It is important that we treat animals as well as humans with respect. There have also been many studies done on children who are cruel to animals, who later go on to abuse other human beings. It is all about learning empathy. Read biographies of famous dicatators and murderers like Ivan the Terrible or Mussolini and you will see that their early lives were marked by animal torture.

Also, it is ridiculous to say that caring about chickens means that you do not care about human beings - people can care about more than one thing at a time.

AgentZigzag - all my animals get cuddled and respond to me on an emotional level - including my chickens.

I simply want a society that has kindness at its core. Idealistic perhaps but the phasing out of battery hens (to end in 2012) is part of this.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 20:58

Other than carrots, onions and potatoes, frozen veg is excellent value.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 20:58

I think all commercial layers are vaccinated, free range or not. Except perhaps organic.

millie30 · 08/04/2011 20:58

I buy 20p Morrison's pasta, I think I'll be going to Tesco tomorrow instead!

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/04/2011 20:59

I bet its all gone anyway. When they have offers like that you see people with trollies full. Cafe owners and wholesalers.

Thingumy · 08/04/2011 21:00

I was a staunch buyer of organic produce until we got skint.

I still will buy organic milk for dh and ds (I'm lactose intolerant) and chicken which we have once a month if that.

We are very very lucky in the fact that we have the use of some land (benefit of my workplace) so can grow our own veg.

We don't alot of meat or eggs tbh.

When I buy meat it is from our local farm shop as it works out cheaper and far nicer than that incipid shit in tescos.

It is tough when you are skint.
