I know that they cost more, but surely it is worth the extra to know the bird has had a better standard of living.

From what I saw, these pigs were outside and cared for in Denmark, these pigs bacon were marketed under 'danepak'.They were outside and not kept in pens or barns.

I don't hold out any respect for RSPCA labelled meat from what I've read and seen.

Where does it all end and who do we trust?

I guess if you don't trust anyone with regards to animal husbandry, you go without or slaughter your own.

scottishmummy · 09/04/2011 00:12

high expressed emotion berating folk is inevitably preachy and sentimental schmaltz.as it relies upon hand wringing about this and that, and if that fails then attack and demean as heartless/ignorant/unaware

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 09/04/2011 00:17

This thread is bonkers. I like it.

buttonmooncup · 09/04/2011 00:17

youcan of course no-one is perfect - as long as you are happy for people who buy battery eggs and FairTrade clothing to lecture you and cast doubt on whether you actually could afford FT clothes if you made cutbacks then carry on by all means.

K999 · 09/04/2011 00:19

Am gagging for a bacon sardnie now....(with a wee bit black pudding and a potato scone)

scotsgirl23 · 09/04/2011 00:19

LaWeasal, random question but do you ever use the MSE forums?

scots, not a user no. I have perused occasionally.

bizbee30 · 09/04/2011 00:38

OP i am presuming you also buy free range chicken as well? i live by and have worked at a chicken factory and believe me its not nice.

My family and i (DP, 2DS's age 11, 12) currently have £20 per week (and have had for a while) for food and groceries. I buy cheap (ie 20p per chicken) chicken and cheap eggs (£1 for 15 battery) from the factory shop. this is all the protein my family get. When I am able to afford it I will buy free range meat and eggs.

I would never look at someone and their food choices and make a judgement on them. you know nothing about them and why they are buying what they are buying.

yes free range cost more. that is the difference. Most people don't buy 'caged' via ignorance but via situation, and people harping on about it doesn't help.

If caged is so bad then why does the law allow them to be sold?

scotsgirl23 · 09/04/2011 00:45

I agree Bizbee - don't judge because you have no idea why someone is making those particular choices.

splashymcsplash · 09/04/2011 01:24

Only read the first 10 pages but have to say I am rather unimpressed by laweasel et al.

Don't eat eggs/meat at all if you are that poor. there are cheaper and far healthier sources of protein!!

Yanbu at all op.

everthebeliver · 09/04/2011 01:32

yanbu:

Bearskinwoolies · 09/04/2011 01:39

Splashymcsplash - if you had bothered to read it all then you would have found the reasons why, as laweasel et al have had to defend their choices from more sanctimonious posters several times.

Yabu OP - people have to make hard choices in this economic climate.

HipHopopotomus · 09/04/2011 01:50

YABU to be angry with people who buy caged hen eggs - angry at millions of people! I take it you NEVER buy processed food containing.egg unless you are 100% certain of the eggs provenance?

YANBU to buy free range eggs, chickens, pork etc if you can afford it.

HipHopopotomus · 09/04/2011 01:52

Eaten any cakebon a non-organic cafe recently OP? Or do you abstain completely so as never to come into contact with a caged eg'g?

ohfuschia · 09/04/2011 01:59

Yanbu - and the smell of those cheap chickens they have cooking in store nearly made me retch the other day - bleurgh

splashymcsplash · 09/04/2011 02:01

Err bearskin I have better things to do than listen to people repeating incorrect assertions over and over.

Nobody needs to eat eggs.

Bearskinwoolies · 09/04/2011 02:49

Then don't post incorrect assertions. Laweasel et al made their cases for their diets, (unnecessarily imo as it is nobody elses business), and if you haven't read the entire thread, how can you justify posting what you did?

I firmly believe that the OP was being unreasonable for being ANGRY that people have made that particular choice. The rest of the thread has followed from there, with some people apparently forgetting that other people don't live in the same world financially as them/not understanding that their experiences aren't the same for everybody.

GotArt · 09/04/2011 03:00

I'm thinking if you only have 20 quid to spend on groceries a week for your family, but have internet, maybe you should cut out the internet. We all eat for a living.

Bearskinwoolies · 09/04/2011 03:20

That would depend on having to honour any contracts you have signed - generally having signed up whilst times were better, and extending into when times are harder, can be way more expensive to break the contract than just seeing it out.

ditto. your post has been repeated over and over in various insulting ways with noone listening to the points being made. and tbh, the sanctimonious preaching got so dull and offensive that people were being turned OFF vegetarianism. there have been many inaccurate assumptions made with the theme being "EVERYONE can and should become vegans"

GwendolineMaryLacey · 09/04/2011 08:34

TSC read the whole thread. It's bonkers!

AlpinePony · 09/04/2011 08:38

YANBU. Every Saturday on the way home from hunting I stop by a farm to buy free-range eggs. It's terrible the way chickens are kept.

goodbyemrschips · 09/04/2011 08:41

On the way home from hunting, hunting WHAT!

and then you buy free range eggs

must be a wind up
