The shop assistant clearly thought I had given her £10.00.

WIBU not to say anything?
Should I own up and return the cash?
Or should I count it as a wee bonus and buy a lottery ticket (or a few)

Confused

That may be so altinkum but it's dishonest and the shop assistant could still be put in the awkward position of being under suspicion.

manfromCUK · 06/04/2011 13:36

I would always give it back if I noticed as I used to have to pay shortages out of my own wages. That said, a pimply youth (not having a go at him - I was one once) argued with me in the Coop once when I told him he'd undercharged me on a DVD offer - saying "it's a good deal, don't moan" so I took him at his word.

But the cashier WILL replace the money when she cashes up, or she will be first suspect. She'll have to!

DooinMeCleanin · 06/04/2011 13:37

Like another poster said it is likely the girl will have to pay it back from her own wages. This is what happens in the shop I work in atm. I was down £10 on dd2's birthday week. I had been distracted by a group of teens messing about and wasn't paying attention, so it was my fault but it doesn't make it any easier to swallow. I hope that person needed that tenner as much as I did that week.

YABVU.

Salmotrutta · 06/04/2011 13:37

Yes, realised that altinkum - sorry!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 06/04/2011 13:38

If you didnt realise at the time then keep it. I work on the till cant count for shit have often gave wrong change when feeling hungover a bit poorly it's never come out of my wages.

Quenelle · 06/04/2011 13:38

Depends on the shop. If it was a chain with lots of staff, and there wouldn't be one dedicated person on the till all day, then they won't cash up until the end of the day, and can't blame any one person. Some people will have covered breaks and lunch hours, and most stores try to vary duties throughout the day (morning on till, afternoon replenishing shelves). If it was a smaller shop I might, but not if it involved a special trip.

DooinMeCleanin · 06/04/2011 13:44

Yes I know that altinkum, but the shop I work is a small business not a large chain. The hours are ideal for me and I know there is a list of at least 5 people waiting for my job, so I won't be fighting my boss over that one anytime soon.

Jobs are like gold dust atm.

If I thought I could just get another job then I would argue with it.

buttonmooncup · 06/04/2011 13:47

I would say keep it. And I've worked on tills for quite a few years. The shop will be insured and they should NOT be taking money from the cahiers wages. If the till was consistently down then the cashier would maybe be in trouble - but that would be becasue they were either on the rob or consistently giving people too much change

stoppinchingthedummy · 06/04/2011 13:49

It depends what type of shop - A supermarket dont track anything more that £10 short or over by £10 ..Small shop yes i would ...big shop like tesco no i wouldnt!

MeRightYouWrongMeBigYouSmall · 06/04/2011 13:53

TitsMcGee89 · 06/04/2011 13:55

keep it, our local spar is a rip off and makes a huge profit each week!

BeakerTheMuppetMuppet · 06/04/2011 13:55

spar?

considering you probably paid that £2.40 for a loaf of bread DEFINITELY keep it

Grin
Bohica · 06/04/2011 14:01

Spa over charges you all the time, keep it.

whomovedmychocolate · 06/04/2011 14:03

Serves you right for sullying your hands with filthy lucre. One should only use cards so the assistants don't have to hand you money covered in common filth. Grin

Summerbird73 · 06/04/2011 14:11

Spar? I would give the fiver a good clean if i were you and go get yourself a bottle of wine from Sainsbo's!

I cant bear that shop - they are vastly overpriced. Look ok it was a mistake but she isnt being dishonest FFS - stealing? meh

Quenelle · 06/04/2011 14:12

If it's not your money and you know it doesn't belong to you, but you still keep it it's stealing.

MeRightYouWrongMeBigYouSmall · 06/04/2011 14:14

It belongs to me now ....does that help? Grin

OP posts:
FABsBackAndIsWell · 06/04/2011 14:14

I wouldn't have left the shop with it.

You know it doesn't belong to you and if you keep it you are knowingly stealing £5. Some one could lose their job if you keep the money that does not belong to you.
