To decide I would never be life long freinds with someone based on thier footwear?

So today I met a nice woman, collecting her child from the same school as mine. I'd never seen her before (I usually collect from after school club), and we passed a few words about the weather.

Then I noticed what she was wearing on her feet, and started to wonder if I could ever be good friends with her. Confused

AIBU?

Those Converse look like they've been run over by a lawnmower.

Can I tell you a story?
My first day at uni. Due to staying in old-fashioned hall of residence, I discovered I was not actually sharing a flat, but in fact sharing a room. Get to my room, the other occupant has left her stuff on one of the beds and gone off somewhere. She had hideous shoes. Big platforms, cork everywhere. Sparkly bits.

I was wearing German army boots. My heart sank.

On the basis of our footwear, we were totally incompatible. But we got on very well, were flatmates for the rest of uni by choice, still in touch now.

Don't judge on shoes alone.

MangoTango · 05/04/2011 23:03

Was it these?

LynetteScavo · 05/04/2011 23:09

They were fake carpet Uggs. (Shudder)

I've probably just excluded 1/4 of the female population of the UK aged between 6 and 30 from being a life long friend. But hey.

Well, exactly.

I should have made something up.

Hold on......

Lots of people buy shoes based on what they can afford/what is comfortable. I wouldn't judge based on clothing at all. I look a it different from the usual and I'm really, very shy so I do worry that I get judged on appearances.

Theeeeese were the offending shoes.

I'm gonna get flamed now, by lots of low income late nighters, aren't I.

(Disclaimer; I earn a pittance and haven't gone to bed yet)

To be fair if I had a tenner to spend on shoes I think I'd go for anything rather than fake uggs, but each to their own. Mind you I'd rather have cheapy cheap shoes than real uggs any day.

fastedwina · 05/04/2011 23:26

Footwear is important. Went on a date with a guy I really thought was quite cute to only look down during the date and see that he was wearing brogues with no socks (skinny hairy ankles). I was scarred for life and there was no second date.

Don't mind different or funky but somethings are just beyond the pale!

caramelwaffle · 06/04/2011 00:06

Oooo I am loving that flooring.

What are the those shoes? Fish flops?

chopchopbusybusy · 06/04/2011 00:21

When I first read this I did think "oh, FFS, how shallow". Having now seen the hoof boots and been reminded of the gladiator converse (DDs and I have had hours laughing over these in the Next catalogue over the last couple of weeks), I actually think the carpet uggs revelation is a bit tame.

Skinit · 06/04/2011 00:29

Wtf are "carpet uggs"?

chopchopbusybusy · 06/04/2011 00:32

Carpet uggs = ugg slippers

CharlieCoCo · 06/04/2011 00:35

there are no words!
in this case; fish flops; no you cant be friends with her. she may hypnotise you and before you know it you will be making a mn thread saying you have a fish flop obsession and have a cupboard full of them in different colours and fish. you havent bonded with her yet so get out now while you still can!!!

:o

Skinit · 06/04/2011 00:37

She probably doesn't have money for "better" footwear. Not really worth posting about and sniggering about.

MollieO · 06/04/2011 00:40

Fish flops? Can't say I'm really sole-d on them.

Did you see what I did there?Grin

mitochondria · 06/04/2011 08:35

Ah, I probably would pass judgement on uggs. Do you mean the knitted ones that look like you have an old man's cardigan wrapped around your ankle?

I wouldn't consider "fake" to be more of a problem than real ones though, at least the owner hadn't wasted a lot of money on them.

I liked the hoof boots, not so sure about the fish flops. Suspect they might smell.

TragicallyHip · 06/04/2011 08:44

I have seen some things on this thread, it's taken me to a whole new shoe world which I didn't know existed! Love the fish flops tho Grin

I have real uggs, well ones made in Australia not the American brand. They are comfy and warm in the winter so ner Grin.

Fake uggs do look shit, especially when the bottom sinks to one side!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 06/04/2011 09:32

I would love a pair of UGGS and will buy some next year I hope.
When I opened the thead I thought the shoes in question would be MBK jobs. I loathe those shoes with a passion reserved for few things.
At DDs last school, there were a coterie of lovely fragrent wealthy mummies who had MBK competitive whinging.

StarlightMcKenzie · 06/04/2011 09:40

I've never heard of Uggs, so would that mean we could be friends?

beanlet · 06/04/2011 09:45

Hey you lot. I rushed for the commuter train yesterday with sick DS strapped to my front, and it wasn't until half way through the journey that I realised I was wearing a fetching combo of ankle length trousers, loafers, no socks - and here's the shuddersome thing - wild overgrown unshaven legs. To work.

I would hope you had the kindness to overlook my hideousness below the ankle and be my friend.

marmaladetwatkins · 06/04/2011 09:50

If you were wearing ankle length trews, how would anyone see your fuzzy legs? Confused

YANBU Lynette. I am a footwear judger. I will not even LOOK at anyone wearing trainers if they have not been participating in a physical activity.

beanlet · 06/04/2011 09:53

They ride up above the ankle when I sit down, exposing a good two inches of gorilla fur. And I thought it was just a myth that mummies were too busy and distracted to dress themselves.

Celestialstarlight · 06/04/2011 10:02

I have learned a valuable lesson here op which is to never click on links in threads. I have a terrible fish phobia Sad
