Inappropriate songs in schools?

space2010 · 05/04/2011 09:02

When my daughter arrives at school there is music playing in the classroom, this I feel is great, however...... I have now heard them playing Britney Spears 'hit me baby one more time' and that other awful song 'pizza hut, pizza hut, mcdonalds, kentucky fried chicken and pizza hut'. Am I being unreasonable thinking this is totally unacceptable? She is 6 by the way, however age isn't relative. Setting good examples, I think not?

OP posts:
goodbyemrschips · 05/04/2011 09:08

It is pop music..don't read anything into it.

MmeLindt · 05/04/2011 09:11

YABU

If they were playing Eminem I might have a word with the teacher, but Britney?

And Pizza Hut Pizza Hut is a fun song with actions. She is not [horror] eating in these establishments.

Skinit · 05/04/2011 09:20

I wouldn't like it because the assumption is that they are idiots! Why can't the teacher play good music? It need not be Bach (though thatwould be nice) but hecould choose classics like he Beatles or Le Zep! They''re amazing music....what is the class behavour like?

grovel · 05/04/2011 09:21

I'm with Skinit. How about some Gary Glitter?

worraliberty · 05/04/2011 09:29

Why is the assumption they are idiots?

And what is wrong with Britney's song OP?

Please don't tell me you think the lyrics mean she's asking for a smack around the chops? Hmm

If it was something like Sex on the beach or Smack my bitch up, I'd say you had a point.

reallytired · 05/04/2011 09:35

Oh honestly, I was expecting you to say that they were playing "Like a virgin" by madonna or "Relax, don't do it ... "

Prehaps you could suggest to the teacher that it would be nice to let the children bring in their own CDs. You might then get a shock, quite how bad taste some six year olds have in music.

inkyfingers · 05/04/2011 09:47

YANBU. What's the point? Cheer them up, inspire them for the day? Cheer up the staff? School is all about giving them something new, ideas, experiences etc. Crappy pop doesn't actually do anything for them. Home is different.

SardineQueen · 05/04/2011 09:50

YANBU IMO

worraliberty · 05/04/2011 09:51

How do you know 'crappy pop' doesn't cheer them up when they walk into class in the morning?

Have you never been to a holiday camp or a kids party?

Crappy pop is extremely popular with young kids {starts doing the Macerena} Grin

Skinit · 05/04/2011 09:52

There's nothing wrong with pop music...and Britney has her moments but school should be a place to expand your horizons. The kids should be exposed to great music...and I mean great in the truest sense.

Classical, folk, rock, jazz, Motown...all of the best stuff that there is.

Skinit · 05/04/2011 09:53

Worraliberty....if they need cheering up then there are tonnes of great songs to play them which many will not have been exposed to. Why imi them to what is already within their grasp?

Skinit · 05/04/2011 09:54

That should read "Why limit them"

Chil1234 · 05/04/2011 09:55

YABU... 'Totally unacceptable'??? WTF?

MmeLindt · 05/04/2011 09:57

Skinit
I don't agree. There is good music in all genres.

DD is learning about the different genres in school at the moment, and can recognise jazz, country and classical music. They also do pop music. The DC enjoy it.

worraliberty · 05/04/2011 09:58

Because they're only little, because it's fun to hear music you're familiar with in the morning that puts you in an upbeat mood...and because there's plenty of time to introduce them to other genres when they're a bit older {still doing the Macerena}

Spudulika · 05/04/2011 10:01

YANBU

I remember dd in year singing this song:

"Freak me baby
Let me lick you up and down
Til' you say stop
Let me play with your body baby
Make you real hot"

Not nice to hear that coming out of the mouth of a little girl. Shock

Fighting a losing battle though. She's now into Jessie J big time and walks around singing this:

"Bang bang Hey, pour me a beer
No pretty drinks, I'm a guy out here
Rollin' rollin' rollin' rollin' money like a pimp
My B I T C H is on my dick like this
Dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty sucker
You think I can't get her like you you motherfucker"

Spudulika · 05/04/2011 10:04

Oh dear, didn't read the OP properly.

No - Britney and the junk food song are naff, but not obscene.

No where near as bad as the song my dd's (Y7) art teacher was playing in class while the kids were working independently the other day, "Have a baby by me baby, be a millionaire" by 50c. And this is in a school in an area with one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the country.

MmeLindt · 05/04/2011 10:05

Spudulika
How old is your DD? I would allow DD to sing songs like that.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 05/04/2011 10:06

Pleased you posted that spudulike, someone recommended jessiej for DD. I think we'll pass on that.
OP, you are being slightly ridiculous TBPH. You can play that music at home to them if you feel that strongly about it.
Skinit, I would challenge your statement that Led Zep and the Beatles are amazing music but horses for courses.

MorticiaAddams · 05/04/2011 10:07

YABU. What is totally unacceptable about it?

My kids used to sing the fast food song from about 3. It drove me completely mad but they loved it.

YANBU Britney became famous because of the video for that song, which featured her as a highly sexualized schoolgirl. Poor taste to play it in a school with young girls.
Fast food song is like a bloody advert, reinforcing brand awareness, children's pester power, etc.
There are plenty of irritating but harmless pop songs they could play. Mine love the gummy bear song since it was played to DS in a music lesson.

worraliberty · 05/04/2011 10:18

Dear God what happened to fun?

I'm so glad the teachers aren't this miserable.

As for the Britney video, well they're not showing them the video are they?

charmum3 · 05/04/2011 10:29
