Inappropriate songs in schools?

When my daughter arrives at school there is music playing in the classroom, this I feel is great, however...... I have now heard them playing Britney Spears 'hit me baby one more time' and that other awful song 'pizza hut, pizza hut, mcdonalds, kentucky fried chicken and pizza hut'. Am I being unreasonable thinking this is totally unacceptable? She is 6 by the way, however age isn't relative. Setting good examples, I think not?

I was a bit surprise when Ds2 (y5) learn "Bohemian Rhapsody" in school because I am not sure the words are really school children friendly but I do happen to love that song [cannot make her mind up emoticon]

I don't think Britney Spears looks particularly sexualised in that video. The dancing and the facial expressions are fairly neutral, and in some of it she wears a short school skirt, as teenage girls generally do.

Iwas on a teaching practice in a school, during an assembly a group of 9/10 yo girls were demonstrating the fruits of their dance club, Iwas Shock when "Push the button" but the sugababes began playing. Who was supervising these children!

MillyR - Yeah, right.

All Pop Music Is About Fucking. No exceptions. It might be a bit tenuous sometimes though....

YANBU, they are not the best or most appropriate choices for songs for that age!!! Agree also with another poster further up that the children could take it in turns to choose a cd to bring in and that the teacher could have chosen her music with more care...

pinkgirlythoughts · 05/04/2011 10:53

I used to play Bob Marley quite a lot when I taught year 4. Really helped to calm them down and keep them quiet while they were doing independent work.

Skinit - If someone was concerned about sexual content, most Led Zep would be particularlry inappropriate.

Thanks for all the messages. I did have an issue with it but am somewhat a little more relaxed about it after reading the messages. I guess a 6 year old wouldn't understand that 'hit me one more time' means give me another go at our relationship after we have split up, well my 6 year old wouldn't. Therefore they would take it literally I feel, especially as some children were displaying a hitting action whilst singing the words?? Mmm then if they hit in the school they get told off. I think its mixed messages. I like the idea of them bringing in their own music though, especially such a diverse bunch of kids, and who knows what they might play. I think the fast food song is crap and my issue is if the school are playing it, then eating fast food is okay?? But I appreciate what you have said about the fun aspect of it though.

Thanks again.

The English speaking DC at our school performed We Will Rock You at the school concert last year. Think that the Swiss teachers thought it was particularly British. btw, did you see my blog post about the Fête de Bonhomme Hiver?

worraliberty · 05/04/2011 14:10

At age 6 they are well old enough to know that hitting each other is not on.

And yes, eating fast food is absolutely ok. Has anyone ever said it's not?

Obviously as a treat/addition to a normally healthy diet.

I read and watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when I was little...I did not become addicted to chocolate or any other sugary things.

knittedbreast · 05/04/2011 14:13

i dont think there is anything wrong with it. my 5 year old used to go around singing red hot chilli peppers, amy wineshouses lady boy song and wholly inappropriate trance music choruses. Love it!

vess · 05/04/2011 14:25

YANBU
There's tons of great music out there, and they choose Britney and a junk food song. Why?

gorionine · 05/04/2011 14:50

MmeLindt, No I have not looked at your blog in a long time Blush but I will look now ,I think it is still in my favourite, if not I will politely ask you to link againGrin

Last year year6 did we "will rock you" at leavers assembly and thought it would be great fun to point at the HT when singing "you've got mud on your face, you big disgrace" Thanks got he's got a sense of humour!

gorionine · 05/04/2011 14:51
