To be a little fed up about maternity leave?

I am not fed up per se as I have had fairly good maternity pay to 6 months and am now going on to SMP for 3 months. What does irritate me is that as working women we get nothing after 9 months - our mortgage, council tax etc. doesn't stop to account for a loss of one income within the household. I have been in the fortunate position to be able to plan for this but it does irritate me that some feckless individuals produce children and then have all their housing costs etc. paid for. It's just another example of how flawed the system is. Then when we return to work we have all the worries regarding childcare and juggling home and work life.

Are my current feelings justified or do I just have more time to dwell on things now? For what it's worth I would hate to be on benefits as I like earning my own money.

It must be how a fair few of them live if it's so common for you to hear the stories! And they all seem to be about people that don't work, but have at least 2 children.

expatinscotland · 04/04/2011 22:19

Yes, because everyone on benefits is better off on them than in paid employment Hmm.

scottishmummy · 04/04/2011 22:21

yes everyone knows someone on the buroo whos loaded with big hoose, loads weans, gargantuan telly, swans about quite the thing.yes, because so and so who knows your man told him,and he told you.so it must be true

scottishmummy · 04/04/2011 22:24

in fact round my way cant move for claimants swanning about with weans and bugaboos.hogging all the seats in the chi chi cafes. or hang on is that the locals.mmm must ask a wee wummin at the bus stop, she looks chipper

expatinscotland · 04/04/2011 22:25

Phones, Sky telly and cars as well, SM. And every one of them smokes and drinks, too.

celebmum · 04/04/2011 22:25

Yeah hence the point being made here, it's not fair that the majority of us that work receive no help from the system. Those losers
Like I mentioned before ruin it for those who genuinely need it, the whole benefit system needs looking at to stop people being able to take advantage, and if that means that we stop making it so easy for them to do so then so be it!!

if this is still making you yawn.. Go to fucking bed!

scottishmummy · 04/04/2011 22:25

aye and thats just the weans.

celebmum · 04/04/2011 22:26

scottishmummy · 04/04/2011 22:26

expatinscotland · 04/04/2011 22:28

No help from the system? No child benefit, NHS, tax credits, roads to drive on, lights that work, steady supply of hot water, peaceful society, you know, the infrastructure that allows most people to go about getting their living however they please and time to spare on the net complaining about how hard done by they are?

expatinscotland · 04/04/2011 22:29

I ken SM, with her brood of weans, always hanging round the offies, threatening folk to get them to go in and buy them their WreckTheHoose juice.

YABU, just be thankful you had 6 months decent maternity pay not everyone does. Plus the option is there to go back to work after 6 months and not take longer off. I was happy to go back after 6 months, albiet 3 days week.

scottishmummy · 04/04/2011 22:44

well you'll get plenty of that in daily rangers and some jackie bird too

expatinscotland · 04/04/2011 22:46

Jackie moves her heid too much when she presents. I like Rhona, with her rictus smile. :o

georgie22 · 04/04/2011 22:52

Twoofus - I feel for you and only wish things could be different. Yes we know what the situation is before you have a baby but with a firstborn child you don't actually know how you will feel until you're holding them in your arms. I stand by my original post that it's unfair that you can't take longer at home with your child but we've been forced into a situation where many households rely on 2 incomes.

Really hope it gets easier for you.
