to buy an iPad even though DH says no

junojuno · 04/04/2011 11:20

i want an iPad. I think I need one for work (although I do have a laptop) as it would be much slicker for presentations, email easier than iPhone etc.

DH had irrational hatred of all apple products (despite nicking my phone to play Angry Birds) and says anyone who has an iPad is an idiot.

Thing is, he really wants an XBox but I've said I don't want him to have one as he already has a PS3 and is a grown man Wink.

We are not super wealthy but probably could afford them if we didn't buy anything else for a month or 2.

Can I say it's s business expense and none of his business and STILL disapprove of the XBox?

If he is saying no because you can't afford it, need to pay your gas bill etc then YABU. If however, he is saying jno because he doesn't like Apple then get one. He is being a twit.

FabbyChic · 04/04/2011 11:22

Why don't you get an Ipad and he get an Xbox? Compromise is the key here.

wishingchair · 04/04/2011 11:23

You can either call a truce and get both or you don't get the iPad or the Xbox. Can't have it both ways Smile

And I have iPad (and it's brilliant)

HaggisNeepsnTatties · 04/04/2011 11:26

I must be an idiot cos I have one Grin

thaigreencurry · 04/04/2011 11:29

Are they slicker for presentations? I thought I needed one for that purpose but was told by someone who has one that the ipad is a fun toy and doesn't really have any work benefits.

bubblecoral · 04/04/2011 11:31

Get both or get neither, unfortunately we have to compromise with our DH's at times.

Fimbo · 04/04/2011 11:33

I have just sold our xbox and kinect to part fund the purchase of an Ipad! We don't have the floor space for the kinect to work properly and the dc found it hard to actually play. Most of the games for it cost a small fortune too.

treas · 04/04/2011 11:37

We work from home and have Macs, laptop, iPhone and an iPad - to be honest the iPad is a glorified toy and we do our serious presentations on the laptop

kreecherlivesupstairs · 04/04/2011 11:40

We just ordered one at the weekend, so me and DH are quite clearly idiots. OTOH, I found out a new word to describe DH. Fanboy. Apparently it means someone who worships Apple products.
He is like a child at the moment, we need to wait for a phonecall to say they are in stock.

AlpinePony · 04/04/2011 11:42

If you're the sort of person who boycots nestle, don't buy it.

I won't support apple because I don't like the thought of people buying new livers.

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/04/2011 11:43

Get both, or get neither. You can't complain that you DH complains about Apple products when you say an X Box is for a big kid.

That said I would never run something like this past my DP - if I want something I get it.

AlpinePony · 04/04/2011 11:44

If you're the sort of person who thinks that people should acknowledge and pay for their offspring, don't buy it.

HaggisNeepsnTatties · 04/04/2011 11:46

Eh??

Oakmaiden · 04/04/2011 11:46

Alpine Pony - huh? could you explain please?

caughtinanet · 04/04/2011 11:49

I wouldnt buy it for work purposes. If I came across someone using one in a work situation I'd think they were a of a twit. They aren't work machines, OK for children to play on and to MN on the move but otherwise not worth the money.

Hassled · 04/04/2011 11:53

I think they're great to have in meetings - I have a fellow Governor who whisks hers out during meetings and brings up previous minutes, relevant docs etc at the drop of a hat - while we're all fumbling through sheaves of paper. I'm very jealous.

Anyway - you can't get an iPad if he can't get an XBox. 'Snot fair otherwise.

AlpinePony · 04/04/2011 12:04

Explain? It's all out there in the public domain.

The "face" of Apple denied maintenance to his daughter and claimed the mother was of dubious morals and so "anyone" could've been the father.

He has bought at least one new liver.

How rich do you have to be to be able to buy vital organs and nobody says anything about it?

He claims to have "discovered buddhism" though - so that karma shtick should work out quite well for him in the next life. Wink

Those are just two of the things I personally find disagreeable about him. Not to mention of course the atrocities in Africa for mining the minerals, the slave labour camps in China, etc., etc., etc. I know lots of companies do this - I just find the man completely and utterly unaplatable.

Others won't give a toss of course.

Strictly · 04/04/2011 12:07

Each get what you want. It's not fair to spend £500 on something like that for you and deny him the thing he wants. If you can't afford both now, wait til you can. It's a receipe for disaster otherwise.

My DH hates anything apple too. But now he uses my iPad more than I do (actually between him and my 3 yr old I hardly ever get to use it)

If he's a big internet surfer then he'll love the iPad, quicker to load up, well quicker everything actually. I can't remember the last time my DH got his laptop out, he always uses my iPad :)

Oakmaiden · 04/04/2011 12:17

OK. As I see it the CEO took advantage of the fact he was rich in order to secure the fastest possible, and urgently needed, medical treatment. Which is unethical, yes, but frankly I find it hard to be very judgemental as I am not sure I wouldn't do the same if I could afford it and my life was at risk. He didn't "buy a liver" in the sense that some poor person was frogmarched off the street, deprived issued with a cheque - he manipulated the system to get to the top of the waiting list for a liver transplant early. Which from my huge knowledge of hospitals in the USA (OK - gained by watching House :) ) seems to be something that happens a bit - customers who can afford to make big payments to the hospital get preferential treatment.

On the plus side, he apparently then went on to be instrumental in changing the system for organ transplant waiting lists in the US, hopefully improving the situation for EVERYONE waiting for an organ donation.

Hardly the work of the devil.

Sounds like a crap partner/father though as a young man. Although in fairness, he also wasn't a mutli millionaire at the time, and was 23 years old. Since the family have sorted themselves out, it appears, I don't really see it as a reason to not buy his stuff?

catinthehat2 · 04/04/2011 12:17

OK. This is my perspective.
I have no time for Apple as a co, and its methods of doing business.
I would never buy an Apple product or get tangled in its sticky web of greed.

However, the Ipad2 in particualr is an outrageously clever product, there are no 2 ways about it.

Hence DH owns one as he loves the product more than he despises the co. I am entirely fine with that.

junojuno · 04/04/2011 12:31

He has a work laptop which is blocked from surfing the Internet (Facebook, hotmail etc). Therefore the only house computer I'd my MacBook which is getting a bit knackered to day the least. DH uses it with impunity which I have a bit of a problem with as I an Freelance and if something happens to it, I dont earn any money.

But you're right, we should both save up for both. Wink

I have a funny anecdote. No idea whether it's true. A bloke in America sent his brand new Ipad back for a refund with a note saying just ' The wife says "no"'. Apparently Apple sent it back to him along with the refund saying . 'Apple says "yes"'.

Would be great if it was true.

fluffy123 · 04/04/2011 19:50

Get one , they are brilliant and then don't buy any clothes shoes etc for a few months . Perhaps have a look around your house and see if there is anything you can sell and put the proceeds towards your life enhancing iPad.
