to buy an iPad even though DH says no

i want an iPad. I think I need one for work (although I do have a laptop) as it would be much slicker for presentations, email easier than iPhone etc.

DH had irrational hatred of all apple products (despite nicking my phone to play Angry Birds) and says anyone who has an iPad is an idiot.

Thing is, he really wants an XBox but I've said I don't want him to have one as he already has a PS3 and is a grown man Wink.

We are not super wealthy but probably could afford them if we didn't buy anything else for a month or 2.

Can I say it's s business expense and none of his business and STILL disapprove of the XBox?

What about a tablet, the new galaxy is supposed to be good?

IlanaK · 04/04/2011 19:58

My DH said no too and I got one anyway. I justified it for business use too. It arrives tomorrow and I am so excited I doubt I'll sleep tonight!

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 04/04/2011 20:02

Don't get anything else other than an iPad .... The rest are poor substitutes!

An iPad is so cool and I use mine for work and play ..... Your DH will become a converted lover of the iPad!

Dozer · 04/04/2011 20:04

I love mine, but don't like the keypad, no good for writing anything longer than a couple of lines.

scottishmummy · 04/04/2011 20:14

why do you need dh permission to spend money?dont you have your own money?why are you tippy toeing around like this- if you have a salary spend it how you wish dont go grovelling to another adult seeking permission what to buy

grow a spine woman,really

junojuno · 04/04/2011 22:06

I don't need his permission, but we did discuss whether he bought an X box and I said I'd rather he didn't. I may have to change my tune on that now.

Grin

I do have a salary but I'm freelance so it's patchy. DH covers all the mortgage, bills etc and my salary pays for my expenditure, nice things for DSs and holidays. We also agreed that I would pay additional money off the mortgage so we could get rid of it quicker, as and when I could.

So I should grow a spine but don't want it to cause an argument.

I don't know, Scottishmummy - personally my husband and I discuss any "large sum" expenditure. And the ipad is fairly pricey....

That said, I can't recall my husband ever outright refusing to let me get something (other than a puppy :( ), but he has made his reluctance on financial grounds clear on a few occasions....

Cutiecat · 04/04/2011 23:54

I have one and to be honest it is a waste of time. I am on my laptop right now. it is fine for a bit of surfing but rubbish for anything useful. Good for the kids on planes etc but other than that pretty limited.

Niceguy2 · 05/04/2011 00:09

Firstly forget Android tablets. Not one of them is in anywhere near the same league as the ipad. I don't care what anyone else says. They simply are not. Perhaps the next gen....maybe. Right now. No, forget it.

OK, now to the ipad. I have one. I confess I love it. I used to hate Apple too until the iphone.

BUT (and its a fairly big but)

You need to be honest with what you want it for. It is not a laptop replacement or even a PC replacement.

It's great for reading information. Absolutely crap if you need to input stuff.

So if you want to read the news, read emails and surf the web then it's fantastic.

If you want to write documents, lengthy replies and for example, write a post like this, then you will be sorely disappointed with the ipad. Whilst you can do it, you won't because the touchscreen as fantastic as it is, it's still nowhere near as useable as a proper keyboard.

So if by slicker for presentations, you mean showing them a customer, then its a MAYBE. But how would you input the presentation in the first place? Convert from Powerpoint? Hmmmm, i doubt it would work properly. Custom made from the ipad? Highly doubt you will have the patience for it.

Bogeyface · 05/04/2011 00:17

My main issue is that he says he hates Apple but will use your Macbook and iPhone when it suits him! If he is prepared to do that then he hasnt got a leg to stand on re: the Apple argument, he is a hypocrite.

I would say get both but you are using the iPad as it is, and wont need to spend anything else. He will need to buy accessories, games etc so his ultimate spend will be waaaaay higher than yours and that should be taken into account!

BitOfFun · 05/04/2011 00:26

I love the iPad- it's ideal for what I need.

I would, however, draw your attention to this observant critique of all things Apple Grin

Okonomiyaki · 05/04/2011 08:23

The iPad is the best thing I have ever bought myself, bar none. I really, really luuuurve it Blush

TrillianAstra · 05/04/2011 08:34

How would you feel if he spent £500+ on something for himself that you didn't like or disapproved of, and said "well we can afford it if we don't buy anything else for a month or so", thereby making you jointly finanacially responsible for something you don't like and didn't want and won't use?

bellavita · 05/04/2011 08:43

We love Apple in this house and I have an I-Pad (which incidently DH bought for me!!)

junojuno · 05/04/2011 09:34

Trillian, I think you misunderstood. We both work and therefore both have personal money to spend once all household stuff is done.

I would not be able to spend any more if i bought an iPad, and he would not if he bought an X Box. I'm not suggesting he gies without stuff because of my demands Wink.

Have you got 3G or just wireless?

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 05/04/2011 09:36

So if you bought the ipad, you would not be able to buy anything else for the next couple of months, but his spending money would be unaffected?

Go for it then!

It's really not a business expense though, it's a toy, but if you want it more than you want anything else the money would buy you then get it.

Fimbo · 05/04/2011 10:14

You can't get Ipad's currently for love nor money Grin

TandB · 05/04/2011 10:23

I love my Ipad and I do use it for work. I am out and about most of the time and I hate lumping a laptop around with me. I have one of the keyboard docks for mine so I can use it just like a laptop.

I know it doesn't run Word and that sort of thing but there are apps to get round any problems like that.

I love it.

IlanaK · 05/04/2011 11:54

If you have an iMac with a wireless keyboard (which I do) then you can use that via bluetooth with the ipad. So it would be fine if you then wanted to do lots of typing.

Chrononaut · 05/04/2011 12:22

in all honesty, if you have a laptop, you do not need an ipad. laptops do exactly the same plus more (i.e multi tasking) the amount of money you would spend on an ipad could easily be spent on something else. same with the xbox.

but seriously, ipads more a fashion thing than anything else (personally, i associate ipads with students). besides, you'd be better off just getting a better laptop.

btw, im not a massive apple hater (i LOVE my shuffle) and i have an iphone, i dont love it but it dose the job, also i build my own pcs.
ipads just a big iphone.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 05/04/2011 12:26

iPad is certainly not just a fashion accessory. I also have a MacBook Pro and, same as kungfupanda, I hate lugging it around with me now. There is very little day to day stuff that I can't do on the iPad.
